My sister is a law student and my Mom told me this morning that she was made Executive Editor for Law Review. Now I am pretty dense when it comes to her law school stuff but this sounded fairly important. I don't really get along with her too well but I thought if this was a really big deal that I probably should at least send a congratulatory card or something.

Can anyone tell me exactly what this is?

Law review is like a "magazine" for law students and professors. They produce articles for publication (similar to a medical journal). Only the very best students are selected/accepted for law review, and the editor position is a very big deal. I would definitely congratulate her in some way. Sounds like she has worked very hard!

That's hot. They're basically telling her she's #1.

Like Mickeyboat said, it's a big deal. The Executive Editor oversees the publication of the Law Review journals, and monitors the progress of articles being written for the journal. Often, the Editor writes scholarly articles her/himself for inclusion.

You're normally selected to be on the Law Review based on your class standing, but sometimes you can "write on" to Law Review by writing an article and having it accepted for publication in your school's journal.

A card would be very thoughtful. Your sister is going to be VERY busy!!

Nah, don't send her a card. Especially if she's been mean anyway.... did she do anything nice for you when the baby was born? :confused3

She probably thinks it's really hot right now, and it may get her a good job when she gets out of law school, but it doesn't necessarily mean she's gonna be a successful attorney!

BTW, I could stand to see some more baby photos....

I agree with Rafiki. It is a big deal in her law school career. But it should not be given any greater weight than any of the important moments in your life. If she acknowledged them, then it would be polite to reciprocate.

Actually I have not heard from her since the baby was born. She did actually call me about 4 weeks ago to see how I was doing. I was SHOCKED because she never calls me - in fact it has probably been close to two years since she called me. I don't get along with her but I still try to at least make some what of an effort even though she usually doesn't.

As for the baby pictures...well we certainly have not taken near as many of Allison as we did for Nathan. I am hoping that DH can get some put on the server this weekend so I can share a few.

I don't know how she is going to do it. She works full-time for the state legislature, goes to law school at night and has a 2 year old daughter. Granted, my BIL is basically a single parent so my sister can accomplish all of this but this law review thing sounds like a lot of additional work. I wonder if she will see my niece at all for the next year.

Thisi is great news. Congratulations to your sister. Most schools limit law reviews to the top 5% or so of the law students and it is very difficult to get a major position on the editoral board of a good law review. Executive Editor is usually the number 2 slot on the law review.

Being an editor on a law review involves a tremedous amount of work. Most employers look at the fact that some was selected for such a position as good evidence that the person will fit in well at a major or large firm where long hours are required for new attorneys. There was a funny book published in the 1980s called the "Official Lawyer's Handbook" that basically stated that a law review slot was a great gravy ticket because the big firms know that anyone who has that position on their resume will be a glutton for punishment who will put in the extremely long hours needed at a big firm.

This position is a major accomplishment. Congratulations again to your sister.
