My DH and DS (14) want to do a Scuba Diving Excursion on the 7 night western in 06. I due to a heart condition can not participate. My question is have any of you done an excusion by yourself ? What do you recommend I do ? I believe they will Scubba on Grand Cayman since we were told that is the BEST place to do it... Any thoughts or suggestions ? I am not a sit on the beach all day person so that would be out. I also don't really want to stay on the ship either. Has anyone done any of the Island Tours ? Thanks for all your help. This will be the first time I will do an excursion alone :guilty:

Can you snorkel?? If so, there is the shipwreck and reef snorkel in Grand Cayman. It is very good and a pretty easy snorkel trip - you snorkel in front of the Magic in the harbor where she's anchored. Another excursion is the Sting Ray City "snorkel" trip. You usually are standing in 3-4 feet of water with the sting rays swimming around you. The Island tour (hell/turtle farm/shopping) has never appealed to me. Lots of people have mentioned here that it's not that great of a trip.

The snorkeling is excellent in Grand Cayman. I like to go down to the end of the dock in Grand Cayman and take a right hand turn at the end of the dock. Follow the sidewalk along the side of the road to the second dive shop on your right, Eden Rock. It's only a couple hundred feet. They were there before the hurricane. Your husband can get his tanks and head out to the wall to dive right from there. As for you, if you like to snorkel, you can put on your gear and climb right into the water from there also. This place has a locker area and some chairs outside. It is so funny to see how much people pay to do this excursion and they end up exactly where you are for free. If you get bored, there are plenty of little gift shops right across from the dock and also a Hard Rock Cafe if you get hot or tired while waiting.

thank you for your suggestions

yes and no i can snorkle.. i'll explain.. i can swim with a mask but i can't seem to use the snorkle part. even with the snorkle in my mouth i still find myself holding my breath.. hahaha ...

we just did the swim and feed snorkle trip with the stingrays in Nassau for new years cruise. i was the only one out of the family that would hold the fish for the rays to eat..

i read about the dolphins and i would LOVE to do it but the dolphin excursions seem to be way too expensive and i would like to do that with my family anyway...

thanks again and please keep the ideas coming

the two hour taxi tour is excellent in grand cayman as well. They let you out at all the cool places, give you plenty of time to get souveniers and mail postcards. You don't need a reservation..just go to the taxi dispatch center which is ocean side, just a short walk from the dock. You can't miss it. If I remember correctly, maybe $20 per person, then a tip for your driver/guide at the end.

There are plenty of great shops to look at, and of course food and alcohol to try.

Hi pfishgirl, I am on the 1/28/06. I have only been to GC once and took the island tour. As someone already stated, it wasn't much. I haven't looked at the excursions yet so thanks for posting this.

so sitting on the beach isnt your thing, snorkle is only so-so for you, and you have to sit out the excursion with DH and DS, if I read correctly. DW and I have never been spa patrons before (though I think she needs to next week, she had a tough year and she deserves it), but I have always read that the spas have good availability on port days. perhaps pampering yourself is something you would consider to be your "excursion" for the day, a trip into feeling good and enjoying all that the Magic. I know you said "no" to staying on the ship, but work with me here! I love the caribbean but all too often when you eliminate the beach and the water, there might not be much left other than the squalor (see also, St. Martin off the beaten path, as we discovered spending a week there a few years back).

am confident a planner like you will fill the day with something you will enjoy. its not just a cruise...its a DISNEY cruise....

thanks again for the suggestions

the spa DOES sound tempting but since I have never been to Grand Caymen and may not again I thought I should at least see it once..

sue.. welcome ship mate !!! we are on deck 6 what about you ? We will be easy to find, in the late night dinner seating Just look for all the wait staff singing Happy Birthday ALL week... Double Bday's for us and I was told double bday for some others as well..

I ended up on an excursion by myself this last trip (DD had a really bad headache, so she stayed behind). Once I got to the meeting spot, there was another DIS family there, so I was able to have someone I knew to chat with.

I'd suggest you might check if there's a meet thread for your trip, and maybe hook up with someone for an excursion. But no one thinks anything strange if you're on an excursion by yourself. Most cruisers are very friendly, and enjoy chatting with folks.

I travel alone and did both the Stingray City Snorkel and the Shipwreck Snorkel in Grand Cayman. Since I live with an anxiety/panic disorder Scuba is definately out for me.

I always bring my own vest-type life jacket and love to snorkel staying on the surface. The Stingray City excursion is a larger boat and a long ride, the Shipwreck/Reef Snorkel is a small boat and stays within view of the ship and shore. If you have to choose one do the Shipwreck/Reef Snorkel. I even saw an octopus. :flower1:

spotdog...

an octopus really ?? i would of freaked right there !!

yea i have panic anxiety disorder as well. but the heart problem is my major flaw that prevents me from doing certain things... oh well ...

i just did snorkel with the rays at nassau and it really stunk but i hear everything is different at grand cayman.. i really don't want to miss out. i am sure i will have everything all planed out well before next year..

thanks again
