Excursion to Dry Tortugas from Key West

It's a short walk to everything you could ever want to do. The rock is only 2 miles wide at its widest, only 4 miles long, and this is pretty much smack in the middle of most things to do, while being a couple of blocks off of Duval so it's quieter. It has its own parking space (which is very rare) and it would be easy to go up island for daily drives. It's only 130 miles to Key Largo, but most of what you would want to do up island is south of Key Largo anyway. Honestly, there's so much to do in Key West you may have no need to go up island.

Thanks so much. I was fretting about planning the drive to Key West and whether we should spend a night in Key Largo and/or Marathon, etc. But from what I've read, there's not a lot to do around those areas so I'm thinking day trips with Key West as our home base may be the key. I'd rather stay in a place like this than a hotel because we can make our own food, etc.

Was the cottage area pretty quiet at night -- it looks like the neighbors might be pretty close? Again, thanks for all the info.

It's very, very quiet. Everybody lives on top of each other in Key West, but it's pretty quiet once you get away from the main drag. I never got awakened by any noise. The neighbors on the other side of the parking lot made very little noise other than doing dishes in their kitchen. There was never any racket from the rentals across the lane. Nobody ever drives or walks on Whitmarsh, so it's very quiet. It was perfection, at least in my eyes. There *was* a really sweet stray cat that would hang out with me on the porch at night while I smoked my pipe, drank a beer and enjoyed the smell of frangipani and night blooming jasmine. It was paradise.

Awesome description. I just emailed the owner. I do like that it is owner run and no processing fees are charged. It looks very clean and nicely maintained. I'm excited. Thanks again for the recommendation.

I hope you get to stay there! I look forward to hearing your input.
