We are on the Med cruise leaving in a little over a week and received emails today from DCL cancelling two of our four excursions. Has this happened to anyone else? We were able to add new excursions, but the pickings were slim. Our family is definitely a bit sad...and disappointed that Disney didn't give more than 9 days notice.

Was one of the excursions in Rome? I don't know if you heard, but there was an earthquake and a lot of people were killed. I am sure there is damage and it would be unsafe for some excursions to take place.

Due to warmer weather in Skagway (late August 2015), our dogsledding excursion was cancelled about a week out. We planned to do the canoe adventure in Juneau which would give us a closer look at the Mendenhall Glacier. We were a bit disappointed to miss that because we had to switch it to dogsledding and did ziplining in Skagway instead. If an excursion is unsafe and the individual tour company running it has to cancel it for safety reasons, Disney cannot really do much about it because port excursions are not run by them. We still enjoyed our Alaskan excursions. Missing out on an excursion would give us one more excuse to return in the future.

Glad that you were able to book a new excursion. Have a magical time!

That's my guess - in Rome and/or another area affected by the earthquake. Possibly the company they were working with was affected even if not for the excursion in Rome - I know on RCCL the same company was in charge of at least three of the excursions I went on.

Even if not Rome or quake-related, they do reserve the right to cancel for whatever reason. Perhaps there have been issues with the vendor to the point Disney has cancelled their contract - I know that's happened before when a company doesn't live up to its promise.

Thanks for the responses. Neither excursion was in Rome. One was the Cannes, Grasse, St. Paul in France and the other was in Livorno visiting Puccini's lake house. I know we will still have a great time, just a little surprised as we haven't experienced this before with DCL. Thanks again!

Gotcha. It's definitely possible that the Livorno one could be earthquake-related. I've got a friend who lives in Tuscany and there are parts that have some damage. Also, it could be the company doing the tour (like I said, when I was there earlier with RCCL the same company handled at least 2 of my excursions - the one I did out of Livorno and the one I did in Rome) has been affected.

Enjoy your cruise!! It's a beautiful part of the world!!

Oh, I've got quite a history of excursion cancellations. Sometimes I find out before my trip, sometimes I don't find out until I actually board the ship and get a "Dear ImprovGal..." breakup letter from the Port Adventures team. Usually it's because they didn't get enough sign ups to meet the contractor's minimum.

On the recent EBTA, our excursion in Sydney, NS was cancelled. We got a note in our room once onboard. We were able to snag 2 of the last 3 spaces on another excursion that we had thought about before making our original choice.

It's also happened to us on other cruise lines. I believe we also were notified once onboard about those cancellations.

We actually had an excursion cancelled at the port. We had booked two excursions - one for the morning and one in the afternoon. When we got to the meeting location at the port for the afternoon excursion, there were signs up that it had been canceled. There was a problem with the vendor. It was obviously too late to book anything else so we just explored on our own.

DD is on the sept 3rd med cruise.
She got an email yesterday cancelling her perfume apprentice excursion in eze (villefranche port excursion)..
she is soooooooooooooo disappointed...

all that it said in the email was "due to changes" this excursion will not be available on your cruise...

she's trying to figure out what else to do, but she thinks maybe they'll just go for a walk, since the other excursions all look terribly boring...

Was that the Graham Bell museum with lunch? I'd heard some buzz about that one being cancelled.
I was extremely surprised my Bodnant Welsh Food tour didn't get cancelled. We went off with only 4 people.

No it was the Cape Breton's Miner Museum one. I think we were told there wasn't enough interest/participation.

We had a forest hike excursion in Cozumel cancelled because of weather. That was a day of cancellation. We were disappointed since we were looking forward to the hike but we were told when the ground was too wet it was too slippery to be safe. Oh well. We got off the ship for about 30 minutes and then just relaxed onboard. You can't control the weather.

We did the 12-night Mediterranean cruise this summer that left 8/1. Got two emails from DCL on 7/25 that told use the two of our excursions were being cancelled. Both were wine tastings. One in Palermo, Italy and the the other in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. They email didn't give any reason. When I looked online, one said it was sold out, and the other appeared to still be available until after I selected a time and tried to add to my cart. I asked onboard and was told that they were probably cancelled by the 3rd party supplier because of insufficient participation (odd for at least one that showed as sold out). We waited until after we boarded to go the the Port Adventures desk to book something else. I was a bit disapointed in the choices that were left.

In Alaska we had an excursion cancelled that we were not informed of at all. We got to the meeting place listed on our tickets and waited for them to call our excursion. When they didn't we asked and the poor hosts were so upset that we hadn't been notified. I burst into tears (I get emotional and it was an early morning and our only opportunity to go whale watching, the thing I was most looking forward to in Alaska) we went to the port excursion desk and they got us booked onto an afternoon whale watching trip but it was a stressful morning!

We're on the September 3rd cruise too and they cancelled out Vatican City tour. On the website it says sold out though so I'm wondering if we got bumped for another party. We had to rebook to the Vatican City and Colosseum tour which is almost $90 more per person:mad:

Our excursion cancelled after we boarded. The thing that irritated me was that I saw the park was closed on Sunday's so I wondered if we could get cancelled. When I called DCL about it they said that it was definitely still happening. Obviously I was right. Luckily I was still able to get my second choice from the port adventure desk.

wow! that makes at least 4 different excursions cancelled more than a week before the cruise...
as i wrote, the email regarding the perfermers apprentice in villefrache said that "due to changes the excursion will not be available for this cruise"....
no clue what that means..

Probably that there were issues with the vendor on the excursion previously - or they came to Disney with changes Disney was not pleased with.

I think it was the Bacardi excursion in San Juan that got cancelled - or at least suspended - a couple of years ago because of so many complaints that it was not what was promised because of how the vendor was doing it.

Any in and around Rome right now could well be due to dealing with the earthquake. And Vatican things could be affected by it being a Jubilee Year - meaning a whole lot more people than usual.

it's a shame they don't have other 'active' excursions...all they offer are boring guided tours (bus/walking)...i understand offering (boring) guided tours, but not only that type...
the one they cancelled was a fun, active-type excursion...
you'd think disney of all cruise lines would offer more of that sort of thing....but no....they seem to offer far less of that genre excursion than rccl...
at least on this particular cruise..
