what about the "under 2 flags island tour"? we are thinking about this one for our next cruise. any thoughts or comments? thanks!

Not sure who will all be taking this tour with you but St. Maarten is very easy to do on your own. You can rent a car for around the $50 and you can drive around the entire island in 1.5 hours. Being able to stop where ever and whenever you want to is a big bonus.

The 45 minute stop in Marigot will not give you enough time to do any shopping or even enough time to looking around.

But if all you are looking for is a quick tour to say you have seen the island then it is probably what you are looking for.

Strongly reccommend the 12 metre regetta. I have never sailed before, it was a hoot.

Regarding doing excursions on your own... we chartered our own cigarette boat through www.offshoresunsations.com and spent the day over in Anguilla. It was beautiful. If you visit their site, and click on testimonials, we're the family from Des Moines.

Usually when I visit a new place I try to take a guided tour of some kind, just to let someone else do the navigating/driving while I thoroughly enjoy site-seeing. The tour we took on St. Maarten was -- I think -- the one you're considering. I loved being able to see the whole island, and I thought the tour was good overall, BUT... I think we had only about 20 minutes in Marigot. I loved it there, and didn't like feeling rushed to shop and see everything. Philipsburg, which we did explore on our own, just didn't compare, in my opinion.

If you do take the tour, you'll see some cool stuff and get info on the history of the island you probably wouldn't get otherwise. But if you enjoy open markets and handmade crafts, try to schedule some time in Marigot in addition to your tour stop. You won't be sorry!
