My husband and I are potentially looking at trying to do an exchange to a Mexican resort for our 20th anniversary. This is in 1-1/2 years. I was wondering how far ahead you need to be to attempt this and have sucess. We were thinking about maybe one of the Royal resorts in Cancun. This would be in September of 2006. Right now we are really just kicking ideas around ... also thinking about Hawaii as a possibility. We have never been to Mexico or Hawaii and really do not know which direction to go, just looking for ideas.

Thanks.

We arranged an exchange previously for one of the Royal resorts in Mexico. We had planned to travel one of two weeks in January 2004 and we called member services around March 2003 to search Mexico and Cayman Islands for those two weeks. They did not have any matches at that time, but we got a call in April or May that they had a match at one of the Royal resorts (if you are at one, you can use the other facilities) for one of our weeks, and they were giving us a two bedroom even though we only requested (and were only being charged points for) a one bedroom. We ended up needing to cancel so I can't tell you about the resort itself, but that was our process and timing.

Sept is low season for both though I suspect it will be MID season for DVC exchange. You could likely rent in either destination far more cheaply than you could use DVC points, esp for a 2 BR. But an exchange should be pretty easy if you plan at least a full year out. I'd second the Royals for Cancun and the usual top choices for HI including Marriott, Embassy and Westin.

Here is another vote for the Royals in Cancun and the Marriotts in Hawaii. September request shouldn't be a problem. ::MinnieMo Donna

I don't know if Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is a possibility or not. We just returned home from there last night. It was the most stunningly beautiful place we have ever been. (we have not been to Hawaii yet though).

We stayed at the Westin but also attended functions at the Hilton and Sheraton. All were fabulous hotels.

They only get 7 inches of rain per year. It was sunny and hot every day but the breeze off the water made it feel perfect.

I own at the Royal Sands in Cancun and it is very nice. I would be concerned about September as that is high hurricane season. Sometimes it is rough sometimes not. :umbrella:
