This question came up during a discussion of trading points (one DVC resort for another DVC resort) to exchange home resort priority windows - What would you consider to be a fair and acceptable (to most people) exchange rate for trading DVC points (e.g. if I wanted to trade my BWV points for your Poly)?

Would you use the rental brokers' rates ($15 per point, but $16 for BLT, BCV, BWV, BRV, POLY, VGC, VGF, and AUL)? Or would you use the actual values from the DVC point charts? Or would you calculate it a different way?

If I were looking to "trade" points for 11 Month advantage, I would think that the person willing to trade with you was looking to do the same thing. Without over complicating things, point for point would be my suggestion.

As the previous poster said, trading reservations, each member making reservations for the other, point for point. For instance if the desired Poly reservation takes 150 points and the desired BWV reservation takes 100 points, then the BWV owner should transfer 50 points to the Poly member to cover the difference. That would be the simplest. If you are each, trying to transfer points, remember that point transfers are only one way per use year. If you transfer points out, you can not transfer points in. AS far as placing a monetary value, like a rental...that can be difficult. All resorts can draw a higher price for the 11 month advantage, and basically it is whatever the market will bear.

IMHO, and agreeing with PP a point is a point.
Why not you book your HR in the other person's name and they book in your name their HR, then the person who spent less points transfers any additional points to the person who spent the most points. That way you are only using one transfer out/in.

Agree with Chuck. If you are going to do that, the most difficult part will be find another owner who is interested and agrees with you regarding the relative value.

From what I've seen, finding a trading partner is very difficult. Most just end up renting for the resort they want and then renting out their own points to cover some or all of the cost. (I just wait for the 7 month window and if a waitlist doesn't work, I stay at my home resort and try again another time).

I also agree with Chuck.

I'm a BWV owner. There is no way I'd do a point for point trade with an SSR owner - there is nothing I can't get and might want at SSR that I can't get at seven months. For the same reason, I'd want a premium for a VAKL trade. Since I think the Poly rooms are too pricey, I wouldn't agree to a point for point trade at the Poly, I'm much better off with my BWV points. However, I'd do a point for point trade (in theory) to get HHI in the Summer, its a good point value and a reservation difficult to get without home resort advantage.

We did what Carol suggests for our Summer HHI stay, we rented points at eleven months out and then rented our points out - both through David. So I ended up being out $4 a point or something - worth it for the decrease in hassle.

I think it can be done, but it would take a little work. It would entail both of you making reservations for each other. It probably would work best with BCV, BWV and VWL since the point charts are very similar.

Like trading permanently, it really complicates things to try to trade this way. For most situations it's likely best just to rent and rent out, otherwise you severely limit yourself on the potential pool to work with. The exception would be if you have someone you are close enough to be comfortable. Ultimately it's still just 2 rental transactions anyway and the one going second is taking far more risk than the one traveling first.

If we both need the home resort advantage, then it's point-for-point. If you need to book at 11 months, but I don't, the I'd still trade my premium points for your SSR, but it's going to cost you; probably a 1:1.2 - 1:1.5 premium.

I also say if I'm looking to trade I'd just trade a point for a point. If it didn't match up exactly and someone needed to pay for a few points then I'd just come to some sort of agreement - I'd consider typical rental prices to be appropriate.

A $$$ adjustment is likely an easier and better way for most situations, same for trading DVC for non DVC privately.
