We have never had to pay a baggage fee before but we will this trip. What is the best way to handle our return? Should we attempt to pay the fee round trip when checking in tomorrow or pay through BAGS at DW.
Anybody done this lately?

Your subject line says, "Excess Baggage Fee," but I think you're asking about the basic baggage fee for checked bags.

The rules vary by airline. Check your airline's website to make sure you know the weight, size, and quantity limits (and the associated excess charges), in addition to the basic charges.

With some airlines, there's a discount for paying online.

I've never flown on an airline that allows you to pay for both segments of a roundtrip flight when you check in for the outbound flight, but there might be an airline that allows that.

If you're using Resort Airline Check-in (RAC), the basic bag fees must be paid before check-in. You'll get a phone number to call BAGS Inc. the day before your check-out day. As far as I know, RAC still won't accept any bags over the weight or size limit.

I don't think you will be able to prepay those fees. Yes, you can pay for the baggage fees at your home airport but that will apply to only that flight.
When it's time to leave your WDW resort, you will get a notice the day before that tells you what time your DME pickup is scheduled for the next day. In that letter will also be the number for BAGS. You call them and make your payment with a credit card, over the phone. They will give you a confirmation number which you will need when you check your bags the next day.
If you aren't taking DME back to MCO, then you can just get the BAGS number from the front desk..or it may even be found in info in your room.

Thank You, that is what I needed to know. We have been several times always flying Delta but have never had a baggage charge. I talked to someone with Delta yesterday who barely spoke English who said I can pay the baggage fee round trip when we depart but I would not bet they knew what they were talking about.
I have the number for BAGS in our notes just in case.
Thank You,
R

Is there an additional charge to use BAGS?

Nope...just give 'em a call, no extra charge.

I hear ya about Delta though. I hate having to call their CS lines...I never understand a word of what they're saying. Drives me nuts.

BAGS works great. We used it the first time in Aug. with our return Delta flight. Just have your return flight info or confirmation number in hand when you call. Write down the confirmation number they give you and on the day you check out just got to the RAC counter. Give them the confirmation number and your return flight number and they will take care of everything and print out your boarding passes for you.
