Ok, We arrived at Disney this afternoon. Things were going smooth, 1st $1.25 toll booth down, no problems, second $1.25 toll booth NO green light. So I add another $1.25. Still no green light. At this point, I don't know what to do, beep, get out? The cars are backing up. I am in a rental and don't want to pay some huge fee. So what choice do I have, I drive forward. No big red flashing light, no loud bells, nothing. So what's the deal? Who should I call?

Nice headache to start our vacation with.

I'm guessing you were on 417? I looked around this site...

If you missed a toll and are not a SunPass account holder:
If you are not a SunPass, E-Pass, LeeWay or former O-Pass account holder and find yourself in an unattended, dedicated SunPass lane, please continue through the toll plaza. Do not stop and back up, as it is unsafe.
Payment for the toll is still required.

Please mail payments to:
Florida's Turnpike Enterprise
P.O. Box 310
Ocoee, FL, 34761

Make checks or money orders payable to FDOT Turnpike Enterprise and include the following information: vehicle plate information, date & time of occurrence and plaza name or mile marker. (DO NOT SEND CASH.)

and

If you are driving a rental car and missed a toll:

If you have traveled through a SunPass-only lane and were driving a rental vehicle at the time of the missed toll, please contact the rental car company directly to report the missed toll and to learn their policy on toll violations.

If you would still like to make a payment for the missed toll you may send a check or money order for the amount of the toll to FDOT Turnpike Enterprise, P.O. Box 310, Ocoee, FL, 34761. Please be sure to:

* Write the tag number of the vehicle on the payment. The tag number can be located on the rental agreement.
* Keep proof of payment (copy of the mailed check, the cleared check, or the money order receipt) as this will assist in the event a violation is generated.
* Please be aware that under Florida law, violations are issued to the registered owner of the vehicle, in this case, the rental car company, so the company may still receive an unpaid toll notice if your payment crosses in the mail with the notice mailed to the rental car company. In the event that charges are assessed, the charges will be from the rental car company, not from Florida’s Turnpike. You will need to contact the rental car company directly for resolution if this occurs.
* Please include a self addressed stamped envelope if a receipt will be requested.

Even those aren't your *exact* situation, I bet you could contact them, give them license plate info, time, date, etc etc, and, well, request your extra 1.25 back. And let them know of the problem. And be proactive about taking care of the problem before a violation is issued.

DH went through a toll without paying one later evening b/c he had no change and didn't expect to be going on a toll road (stupid GPS), but they had little envelopes sitting there to send the toll in. We did so quickly, and never got a bill from them or National, so that was good!

A few years ago, I entered or exited (can't remember) the Central Florida Greeneway where it was "exact change only." I must have missed the warning sign about that. I had only a few pennies, and traffic was backing up. So...I just continued on. It was a rental car, so I figured Thrifty would nail me for the violation at some later date. But nothing happened. Either the state decided not to ticket me for some reason, or if they did, Thrifty didn't charge me for it. Weird

In many cases they will forgive one missed toll. But if you get a bunch they will run the ownership via the tag number and if it's a rental car, bill the rental car company who will then bill you. But one missed toll; they very well may not bother with it.

Is there a sign in the toll booth giving the name and address to write to or to send a missed toll to?

Was the light still red? If not, perhaps the green was just burnt out? This is why we bought a SunPass portable. One too many times at an unmanned toll holding a five spot.

Similar story in March except leaving WDW going to airport. First toll booth, exact change, light stays red. I DO get out of car and find toll booth man, who waves me on and says "light's not working". Come to next toll, light stays red, I DO NOT get out of car this time as I assume it's a systems problem. 3 months later, I notice a charge on the credit card bill that I used to book the rental car for both the missed tolls and some additional fees. Several phone calls later, all but $5.00 was refunded to my card. A call to my credit card company to dispute the $5.00 charge eliminated it altogether. Glad how mine turned out but I kept asking everyone I dealt with, "what should I have done differently?" Never got a good answer....

Well NEVER NEVER NEVER get out of your car at a toll booth in Florida regardless of the situation. It is extremely dangerous; no one is expecting pedestrians in the toll plaza area. If a toll booth malfunctions, move on, please.

For this month's trip, I visited a nearby car wash before departing and changed a couple of fivers into quarters. (Their change machines can handle bills other than $1, usually.) That did the job once I hit toll booth-land in FL. And it was especially helpful this time because I was commuting most nights to the Hyatt Regency MCO, where my nephew was playing in the U.S. Open chess tournament. Nice hotel, btw. And it was also nice to see the big shopping area in the non-secured part of the airport; it's the opposite where I am, all the shopping/retail/restaurants are beyond security at DTW.

Please don't get out of your car. It is a severe no-no even at exit ramps. I can not stress this enough because I saw a near miss at on SR-417 (Greenway) south of MCO before they put new toll stations. Only personnel working are authorized onto the toll plaza ops area
