Everything Michigan....

Thought I'd bump this thread and see if I can get any help planning a vacation. DH and I were born and raised in MI and so were our kids. We moved when the kids were almost 9 and 7 (18 & 16 now). We go back regularly to visit family in the Detroit area.

We think we'd like to take our summer vacation in MI this year and visit some of our favorite places that the kids barely remember. We'd love to do Traverse City, Petoskey, Mackinaw Island, Sault Ste Marie, and Tahquamenon Falls. We will probably have ten days or so.

Although I've been to those places too many times to count, things change and my memory is a little fuzzy! Any suggestions on places I've forgotten, things we should skip, places to stay, etc?

Try coming back the sunrise side and stop by Alpena, Oscoda, Tawas etc. It is a little more rustic than the western side of the state. Tawas point is awesome for swimming. Rent a cabin in the vacinity. Tawas is a town that's very dear to my heart. Go see a movie while you're there. The show is like $3 and the popcorn is $1.50. A treat for us city folk. (I worked at that movie theater as a teen. And also at the drive-in, which no longer exists).

Traverse City people, tell this Metro Detroiter about living up north. We've vacationed there many, many times and have fallen in love with TC and the entire Leelanau Peninsula really. Great downtown. Really nice people. Laid back lifestyle. Wine country. Boating and water sports in summer and skiing in winter. We're thinking about buying something to summer in for now, then eventually move there year round in the next 5 years or so. School system? Summer season? Traffic? TC winter, brutal or bearable? General lifestyle?

We lived in South Florida for a few years (still have a home there) and although most people who vacation there think it would be the ultimate place to live, IMHO, it just isn't cracked up to all that much. Great place to vacation, terrible place to live. Just want to make sure that I'm not seeing TC through rose colored glasses and get some real life perspective on the region.

Thanks in advance...

TC is a great place to live. My kids are out of school now so I can't comment on the schools. Great lifestyle, tons of things to do if you love the outdoors.

The only thing I'll say about the winters is that they last a long time. March is hard.

I can't say anything negative because we love it up here. I have heard that it's hard to make a living up here but if you are looking to buy a vacation place, that shouldn't be an issue.

I like the weather in the summer, but there are lots of people.

Thank you for your opinion! Work is super flexible, don't have many day to day responsibilities so we're good there. We're renting a place downtown for a month this spring to kind of get a feel for life there instead of a week here and there. Really looking forward to it! Have heard the winters can be tough, but we like to get outside and ski, snowmobile and whatnot, so we should be all good. Any areas in the city that you can suggest that are in your opinion preferable to others?

My parents are snowbirds and live in Petoskey from June-October. They're both from Michigan. When we go up we do Avalanche Bay (water park at Boyne Mountain) and zipline (Boyne Highlands is where we generally go).

We did the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island for their 50th anniversary. I need to get the kids back to Mackinac Island. We loved riding bikes around the island. Lots of good memories.

Other than that we did typical stuff including playing at the "beach" and miniature golfing. And I eat way too much ice cream (our favorite is Yummies in Harbor Springs).

I know I'm not adding anything to the current discussion but I saw the thread title and got homesick. Just wanted to show the mitten some more love!

Hi Fellow Michiganders/ Michiganians-

Have any of you stayed at Soaring Eagle Resort in Mount Pleasant? We have the option of staying there during an industry expo and wondered how fellow DISSERs would rate the place.

TIA-
ready

P.S.-
We're not gamblers (unless you count life :lmao:)

Quite a number of years ago we stayed over night for a family event at Soaring Eagle with kids and adults. Kids enjoyed the indoor pool, watched movies in the room and there was an arcade. We did not use the child care program, we took turns supervising our own kids. We ate dinner in a nice restaurant which I think has since been changed. The rooms were fine. I'm not much of a gambler either but did venture into the casino for a bit of slots.

I did a quick look at recent Tripadvisor reviews, suggest you do the same... a mixed bag for sure.

I saw the review about smoke and that did remind me that it was smokey in the casino but I am super sensitive to smoke. The only real negative I remember was being disturbed by the number of young children in the day care room by the casino late at night! There was a little bit of an "air of desperation" kind of thing, like people who were gambling who shouldn't have been. But the actual facilities were very nice then... it was several years ago (8?). Good luck!

perfect timing - i'll be in detroit this summer (visiting family).
I'll have my daughter and son-in-law with me.
They're giving up disney to visit the family with me.
So i figured they need a consolation prize - a few day trips over the course of the 10 days.
i thought we could go to cedar point, niagara falls (easy drive via canada), the zoo and then a trip up north.
I've told my kids about mackinac island for years, so i thought this might be a nice opportunity. And they love to ride bikes, so that's perfect.
Now i just have to plan a trip around mackinac island.
They love anything active - zip lines, hikes, bikes, etc.
It's been so many years since i was up north (as in 40 years).
I hope the trip lives up to all my buildup over the years of how great it is up there!!

$1.50 for popcorn????????????????? that's worth the trip right there!!!

the grand hotel is something like $800/day in the summer. So a tad out of my price range.
But i don't think we want to stay on the island anyway.
Just a day trip. Take the ferry over. Rent bikes for a few hours. Eat fudge. Take the ferry back :)

The question is, where to stay up north and what else to see.
My daughter found a nice park in that area with a guided hike and zipline.
So we'll do that. Now we just have to find more of that.

I think Tahquamenon is probably a nice idea.
I've only been there in the dead of winter (on a week long snowshoeing trip back in 1972!! - yes i am old!!!)
But i'm sure it must be pretty in the summer.

Truth is, i'm really more familiar with northern michigan in the winter than the summer (and even that familiarity is from 40 years ago).

i'm looking forward to showing them the great lakes. That alone is worth the trip!!
Those who aren't from the area have no understanding of what 'great lakes' means. They think 'lake', not at all what they are!!

We stayed in 2012 for $800 for two nights in season. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I'll probably never stay there again. But next time the kids and I go, we'll go for the day and ride bikes and have lunch.

Have you checked out Boyne Mountain? That can be a fun place to stay for a few nights in the summer and they have some surprisingly affordable room rates. They have all kinds of stuff to do outside (roasting S'mores, ladder ball, chairlift, ziplining, etc.), a great water park, and Deer Lake is right there for swimming.

The question is, where to stay up north and what else to see.

In Detroit area: Greenfield Village, the Detroit Institute of Arts.

In the Flint area: Huckleberry Railroad. Don't forget to get a Christmas ornament at Bronner's in Frankenmuth. They also have a waterpark hotel.

Don't know if Sleeping Bear Dunes & paddle boarding on Platte River have been mentioned.

If you go July 4th - 11th the Traverse City Cherry Festival is on.

For lodging, try "Visit Up North Vacation Rentals". You might find something there. We used them a few years ago. We've also rented cabinettes at KOA and Jellystone.

Great Wolf Lodge & Waterpark in Traverse.

There are also a couple of really nice timeshares where you might be able to rent;"Tamarack Lodge" in Traverse and "The Homestead" in Glen Arbor. Also "Redweeks", "Timeshare Users Group" and "Timeshare Kahuna" are reputable and have timeshare rentals near Boyne Falls and Bellaire. Try some of the other timeshare sights, too.

Don't forget Ebay. Timeshare and sometimes cabin rentals there, too. We're going to SSR next week on an Ebay rental. (Can't wait :goodvibes)

Remember that Canada requires passports now, so if you don't have them (or enhanced drivers' licenses but only a few states offer those) Niagara isn't an option.

I agree with day tripping to Mackinac. There are plenty of nice accommodations in Mackinaw City for much less than you'd spend to stay on the Island.

Have you looked at the Traverse City area at all? It has become quite the lovely wine region, one of my favorite places if DH & I are going away without the kids. While you're there, hit Sleeping Bear for a dune ride, swim in Lake Michigan, etc. There are some nice canoe trips you can take around there too.

We're taking the kids on a Michigan "Grand Tour" this summer and this is what's on our agenda - Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls/Whitefish Point, glass bottom boat ride in Munising (but you could do this at Thunder Bay near Alpena if you don't want to go that far into the UP), kayaking at Pictured Rocks, Sleeping Bear dunes, canoeing the Platte River, horseback riding at the Double JJ ranch near Muskegon, a few days swimming in Lake Michigan and visiting family near South Haven, and finally a night in Detroit on the way home to hit the Science Center, DIA, and Historical museum.

I took my DD to Michigan Tech last summer for engineering camp and we stayed overnight in St. Ignace - the other side of the bridge. We really enjoyed it. For a pretty affordable rate we had a room with a balcony facing the lake. The had fireworks the night we were there and the desk clerk said that we couldn't see them from our room - but we had a pretty good view from the balcony. Funny story - I was in the bathroom changing and heard some bangs. DD knocked yelling that there was someone on the balcony pounding on the window - scary! I told her to grab the key from the desk and we'll get out of there (half-dressed) when I realized that it was the fireworks we were hearing. :o

Did everyone leave Michigan?

A good many have left the state for warmer temperatures over spring break. Some of us are not so fortunate and are muddling through (what I hope to be) the last gasp of winter. :bored:

I don't know where you are but up here we are supposed to get another couple inches of snow tomorrow. I'm hoping that is the last of it though. We have to move next week.
