We were thinking about cruising next year with Royal Caribbean or Norwegian, because there is nothing new for us with Disney for the time we want to sail, and we figure we'll wait till 2007. Anyway, my 10 year old DD absolutely refuses to go, because, she hates salt water and thinks a pool with saltwater is "Gross". Any of you that have sailed before on another line, how big of an issue has this been? Thanks

Princess has fresh water pools too. Some people like the saltwater pools better. I hate the feel of my skin after getting out of the ocean, but do it anyway. There are showers right next to the pools so you can rince off, it's really not too bad.

We came back from Royal Carribean a month ago. My kids hated the salt water pools. They hardly swam because of it. They also missed the Mickey slide! It's hard to go to another cruise line after being spoiled by Disney.

As another poster said some people love the salt water pool. In fact on Cruise Critic they took a poll and it was about 50/50.

For my kids I guess they only expect salt water when they play in the ocean, not when swimming in a pool :)

Good Luck,
Deb

PS...PM me if you have any questions about our cruise with RCCL

The pool on HAL's Amsterdam was fresh water.

We went on a Celebrity cruise in April 2004. Their pools are all salt water and very COLD! No one in our party of 20 people liked them. Kids I think generally don't like the taste of the salt water or the feeling in their eyes. They also did not have any kind of slide or "fun" pool area. Good Luck -- I would look for a cruise with freshwater! :earsboy:

I went on NCL's S/S Norway back in 2003, and both of their pools were chlorinated salt water taken directly from the ocean. While swimming in it was fine, I noticed afterword that I was having an allergic reaction to the mix. If you have sensitive skin and they cholorinate the salt water pools, it may be an issue. Otherwise, I don't think there's anything deterant about salt water in the pool.

I thought even the water in the pools on DCL were salt water (sea water)...that was "cleaned" and/or purifyed...to take the "salt" feel, taste out. I thought that was how they were able to drain, clean and refill the pools so many times.

Okay just to clarify..

DCL pools are salt water or fresh water?

DCL pools start as seawater, then go through the ships desalinization plant (reverse osmosis) and the water is turned into fresh water. The ship can make over 290,000 gallons of fresh water from sea water in a single day.

DCL has onboard water distilliation or desalisination (sp?) with a tremendous capacity. I remember reading something to the effect of a capacity to distill 1500 tons of saltwater per day. So, basically the water in the pools is the same as the water from the tap though I'm sure it's chlorinated. They take salt water and distill it to make fresh water. The pools, therefore, are freshwater.
