Every Wish That We Put Into Motion.... (comments welcome!)

Reality check (aka, someone else needs to tell me what makes sense here because I can just rationalize it to be what I want):

This week starting Monday I: day off, refereed for 2hrs, refereed 2hrs (hs boys and a lot more running), did an hour run, day off, 7hrs of refereeing (no breaks other than the 3mins between each of the 9 games.) No, that's not a typo. 7 hours.

Next week I am refereeing hs boys again for 2hrs on Monday, 2hs on Tuesday (ms boys), and probably a turkey trot on Thursday. I'll plan on plugging in probably 2 other runs of at least an hour .

Should I run tomorrow? Even a 3mi run takes me about 40min, and if I'm doing 40, I feel like I should just do an hour.....so that's where my brain is at.

Should I run tomorrow?
What is your body telling you? Any niggling pains anywhere? If you're feeling relatively good, just fatigued, I'd probably try and run. Plan for 3 miles and see how you feel when you get there. You can always keep going if it's working for you.

yeaaaah. So I woke up at 3am and have been up for the day. I'm basically a zombie, and have to get through grocery shopping, end of the season XC banquet/awards, and zoom training tonight. I might walk on the tread, but IDK if running is going to happen today as I'm increasingly exhausted today.

So, I'm gonna talk about underwear for a second, because black friday sales are a thing. Feel free to skip this if you don't want to read about underwear.

So underwear have always been super weird on me. And most of the time, after stuff got worn a few times they get stretched out weird, and the creep to a wedgie is real. Enter a memory from my way-back-when mom group. Soma. They have a line that has silicone grippers and these things do.not.move.at.all. Not through long runs. Not while refereeing, which included a lot of side-stepping, turning out to take off in a run, etc. And they're usually some ridiculously high price IMO. But they are doing to be at least buy 3 get 2 free.

I LOVE those and own a bunch of them! Though I tend to go commando for races. TMI??

Okay more TMI but I've been wondering about this.... does it feel weird? Do you chafe at all? How is the sweat???
No chafing, but I do keep a small size chafe stick that is ONLY used in that area. It does not feel weird unless the bottoms I'm wearing have a bulky seam or a seam in the wrong spot. I tend to purchase shorts and leggings with gussets for that reason.

The sweat is the same for me. I sweat a lot in the cracks and crevices all over my body (again, sorry if that's TMI), but I find it isn't any more with or without undies. I DO stay away from certain colors that might make it look like I've peed myself, though!

Wanna be a Lions fan to go with my Chiefs fan? We can manifest a Super Bowl meetup!
OK so I ordered a jersey yesterday because I also got a $10 paypal coupon for the shop, and the return policy is either 90 or 150 days, so I'm good if I find something else that I really love. I ordered the blue Hutchinson jersey and am debating adding his signature eyeblack. Tentative plan is to wear it with my white dottie skirt (since they wear white pants with the blue jerseys sometimes) and *if* I end up using this costume, I'll probably have some vinyl lettering ready to go. Maybe "Restore the Roar" (which has been a recent slogan for the tigers and the lions) or "Workin on my ROAR" as a nod to LK. I know from experience that the "permanent" vinyl sticks quite well to the smooth-finish satin used on most of the dotties, as long as it doesn't get rained on.

In other news, I tried out the $15 gather foot I got for my sewing machine yesterday, and played around with stitch length, thread tension, and sewing a gathered and non-gathered layer together (it gathers the bottom layer and *not* the top layer AND sews them together at the same time.) This is going to make sewing DIY sparkle athletic skirts SO EASY, and significantly faster than using a long basting stitch and then pulling either the top thread or the bobbin thread and manually gathering the fabric. I just used quilting cotton for my test, but I'm optimistic about how it'll work on swim fabric, as long as I can control the stretch and prevent it from sticking to the feed dogs. Highly recommend if you like this style of skirt.

Weekly wrap-up:

Well, winter has arrived! Making of for last year, from the looks of things. We have gotten probably around 6in of snow so far this week (a town about an hour or so north of us got 27in yesterday....anyone in the upstate NY area is probably going to get slammed on Sunday/Monday with lake-effect.) But what does the snow mean for me? Indoor running. *sigh*

Monday: holy soreness, Batman! Sunday's marathon of refereeing (it was 7 hours, so totally like a marathon!) was really wearing on me. And then I refereed a freshman/JV boys scrimmage. We practiced 3-person mechanics for this scrimmage, so there's a lot less running, but it's more brain-work for me since I'm used to working 2-person (more running, more things to look at) and the coverage areas are different. This was 90min long with about twice as much zone 2 hr than zone 3, so less intensity all around. Good active-recovery.

Tuesday: 2 hours of refereeing. We drove an hour each way to this game....we are hoping we also get paid for travel time since it was so far away. These games were extremely lop-sided in ability, so less intense again.

Wednesday: Thanksgiving "special person day" at preschool, and then a marathon of cooking sides and pies to take out to my parents' on Thursday. My kids changed their minds last minute about the Turkey Trot, but by then it was $40/person instead of $25, so I told them no. (DS3 was a little more disappointed since this was his last year in the 12-and-under age group.)

Thursday: Thanksgiving dinner and travel took up most of this day.

Friday: Did a big clean-up at the house. We're talking hours of cleaning. And then DH and I ventured out to a few stores in the afternoon for groceries and a couple of organizational things. DH smoked a turkey in the evening and I made all of the sides for a Thanksgiving dinner to go with it because we really enjoy comfort food here. I had intended to run after dinner but ate way too much. I also made a pumpkin cheesecake, and the element on our oven burned out at the very end. We were super lucky it was done cooking! But now we won't have a functional oven until Wednesday. :(

Saturday: BIL/SIL and kiddos came over in the afternoon. We got stuff squared away for January, which ended up including a call to Disney since SIL has multiple MDE accounts and we couldn't get her to show up on the resort reservation (LL consequences!), her park ticket was missing on her MDE account but showed up on someone else's. It was a whole mess. I intended to run for an hour before they came over, but got to 30min and quit. My achilles on my right leg has been troublesome, and everything in my legs just hurt today. So, my goal for tomorrow is 60-75min, and then hopefully 90-120 on Monday. I have a massage scheduled for Monday as well.

Looking ahead: I did 27hrs and change of refereeing this month, but only managed just over 6mi of dedicated running. That's not great. I need to not overdo things trying to "make up" for it in December. But I also need to quit making excuses to not run. Making sure I'm getting on the tread for at least 30-45min between referee days is going to be critical to my goal of finishing Dopey "upright, healthy, and be a functional person the next day." This coming week I only referee 2 days, Tuesday and Saturday (a light week.) The 2nd week of December I referee 4 days: M, T, W, F (a heavy week.) And then another light week leading into winter break at school (aka winter break from refereeing before the insanity that will be January and February. There are going to be plenty of opportunities for me to haul myself onto the tread next month, I just have to DO it.

(Also, looking at my referee schedule post-Dopey should help motivate me to quit slacking because I have a week off and then am right back in it with 4 games in 5 days the following week.)

This morning I cut and weeded a bunch of stuff in the cricut. Im testing sizes with adhesive vinyl before I do htv on my shirt….

Here’s my inspo:
IMG_5464.jpeg

And here is the test-cut. I have pink HTV coming (no pink adhesive) and the green will be more muted and not NEON for the grass, but I’m overall happy with it. I considered making the whole thing larger, but I think I’ll run into unwanted placement issues with the flower buds then iykwim. Now the question is, do I put this on the front AND back of the shirt? Buds on the sleeves? Also strongly considering adding some circles to the shirt as well. (And I’m mentally working out attaching a bird to the top of the hat that will have the winking eye, and how to add ears.) If you have thoughts or ideas of ways I can tweak this, please let me know.

Do whatever makes you happiest. I'm familiar with this hippo but had no idea there were flowers on it. If you hadn't shared the photo, I would have guessed the flower on your shirt was from princess and the frog.

Aaaand I’m sick again. The kids have had school cancelled every day this week because of the snow and resulting icy roads because it keeps creeping to to 35 degrees during the day (tomorrow looks bad as well, and Friday is a half day) and I picked up a game to referee on Friday night. Taking all the meds. Humidifiers running.

This looks great! I love the winking eye hat idea!

We are going to be twins. I have the same skirt and a light blue shirt. I'm going as the clock tower, though, so I'm going to make a clock face for the front of my shirt and numbers on the arms, or something... it's all very hypothetical at this point. I have been meaning to post on the costumes thread to ask for cricut help.

Hope you feel better soon!

Weekly wrap-up:
Sunday: 60min treadmill. This went well enough that I don't remember anything about it.

Monday: 45min treadmill. Same as above. This was the first of 4 snow days for our kids, which means they were out of school with a half the the previous wednesday until friday of this week. It just snowed, and snowed, and snowed. And I also started not feeling great on this day with a slightly sore throat and sinus drainage.

Tuesday: refereed JV/Varsity boys, so 3 hours of cross training. Still weird sinus stuff, but nothing serious.

Wednesday: And I got sick.

Thursday: off. Sleep get super messed up because of the meds (mucinex gives me crazy dreams, and sudafed makes me not sleep in general.)

Friday: was scheduled to work 1 basketball game (with a 3-person crew...less running) that turned into a game with a 2-person crew (more running) AND another bonus game immediately after with a 3-person crew because of how many officials were out sick. I forgot to start my watch for these, but somehow it didn't track any of the cardio either and it looks like a normal day. It definitely was NOT because that first game those kids ran us the whole time!

Saturday: JV/Varsity girls tournament, which = 3 hours of cross training. The games were great, which can be uncommon especially in girls basketball around here as the games are generally quite lop-sided in score/ability. **Shoe issues emerged

Sunday: rest. Did a little bit of Christmas shopping, and took DD to watch Moana 2. I liked it more than I thought I would! The little sister part got me right in the feels.

Coming up this week: I referee every day except Thursday. DH and I picked up the end-of-season tournament for 6th grade girls on Saturday, so that'll be 4-5 hours of cross-training...which comes at a great time since I totally count those as half to 3/4 of a run for equivalency.

**shoe stuff. So. I bought the newest 1080s for refereeing and didn't immediately notice any issues, and found a pair of the previous year's model (which is really close to the same) on clearance in a color that would work great for my costumes, so I bought them and set them aside. Well a month into refereeing, and the top of the back of the heel is high and padded in these and it's hammering on my achilles enough that they are both sore at the end of the night. Acutely in that spot, not like it's a tightness/strength issue. So tonight i went to our local fleet feet and explained my issue, and the shoe that feels like it might be the best substitute is the Triumph 22. It's definitely not as soft as the 1080s, but it doesn't feel bad. The colors are not fun (one of the things I love about New Balance) but I need to get something asap so I can try them out and then decide if I need to continue to panic as all of my older-model 1080s are 250+ miles. And yes. I've looked for older models of the 1080s online and they either not available in my size, or above retail at this point. Uuuuuuugh.

I found a pair of the model of 1080s on amazon in mostly white (*sigh*) for $92. So figuring out a new shoe will be a post-marathon problem.

Here we go! In the homestretch for my "all cross training and no running" segment of Dopey training! I'd be lying if I didn't say I felt totally OK about how November and December has gone as far as prepping me for January, but then I look back on the 7hr Saturdays and think Nah. I'll be fine.

Monday: Refereed middle school boys for a little over 2 hours. This was my worst night this year by a lot for how I called the game. I was working with someone who was brand new and tried to do too much and ended up missing things I should have gotten in my own area of the court. Oh well.

Tuesday: 3 hours of refereeing. JV/Varsity boys. Lots of running. Worked with one of the other 4 female officials in the 5-county area. Winter storm incoming, and the roads were garbage coming home, so my 50min drive home took about 80min.

Wednesday: About 80min of refereeing 9th grade boys. One coach complained almost the whole time, and I referee his team again this week. That'll be fun. Worked with another new official, another female (not the same as Tuesday) and she played some college basketball so she has a good handle on the game and just has to work on some mechanics and such.

Thursday: sweet, sweet rest day.

Friday: Another 3 hours of refereeing! I working with another new official, and an official who probably should have retired a few years ago....his kids are my age (40), he was one of the other teachers when I was in 4th grade (and I will always point out that his class built a wigwam and went on nature walks while my class got 2 hours of homework every night!) Both games were competitive and close in score, which is somewhat of a rarity. I was nice to have both teams be heavily invested in their performance and not have one team be so significantly more skilled that calling the game becomes a lot of judgement based on ability instead of legality.

Saturday: 4 hours of refereeing. So yes. This was my "simulation week." Because I got home on Friday night at about 8:30, and was back in a gym 12 hours later for these games. And I was sooooooo sore. Or not sore, but fatigued? My lower back/hips were not happy with me, and my shins were tender to the touch. I referee in procompression socks and it helps a LOT during the games with fatigue. I wore a different pair than I usually do (they're a size smaller than my usual ones which were dirty) so maybe it was just that my legs were too squished for a few hours? I mostly laid around and did nothing for the rest of the day. On a side note, I tried putting some magnesium spray on my hamstrings and calves that night, and it burned sooo much. And it wasn't from putting spray on top of razor burn. I tried to wait it out, but ended up going and rinsing it off. Guess I'll stick to epsom salt soaks during MW. This day felt a lot like how I feel post-marathon.

Sunday: finishing up Christmas shopping. Resting. Will run tomorrow, and then referee for-sure on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday next week. There's a decent chance I'll pick up a Wednesday too, and then I'll have to motivate onto my treadmill for the rest of the month.

Non-running item: I watched the "Music by John Williams" documentary on Disney+ Saturday night, and while it's long, it was pretty good. His music is amazing and it's fun to try and decide if he's so famous because he did basically all of Spielberg's movies, or if Spielberg's movies were so good because of the soundtracks that Williams did for him. Also, holy catalog of films. I knew there were a lot, but I didn't realize he did as many as he has.

Also, and just because it's fun to poke at them a little....

I thought today that while running with @The Expert (in her Mahomes jersey) that instead of wearing my Lion's jersey, I could have just worn my referee shirt, borrowed one of DH's football ref hats and his yellow penalty flags and tossed them in front and then ran ahead to pick them up and apologized profusely. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
