Every Wish That We Put Into Motion.... (comments welcome!)

So. Taking suggestions of how to use up 50dvc points before August 1st. SS weekend is pretty much out as an idea since it’s the weekend after our spring break, and DH will absolutely not go for that (plus the challenge is soooo $$$$.) Our biggest issue is he doesn’t want it too close to MW, but also, spring sports start in mid-March and end in June, and since he’s the JV baseball coach getting away is difficult. We were hoping to use these points toward our MW stay, but we are pretty sure they won’t get loaded in time to keep our other points from going into holding. *sigh*

In training news, I’m going to start lifting this weekend or Monday. Planning on trying out Caroline Girvan’s Iron series on YT, and if I don’t like it I’ll find something on Bodi.

I would look online for when you can find cheap flights, and work around that. Festival of the Arts is fun, but might be too close to MW? Given your schedule though, I would think late January (lower points) or sometime in February would be best.

Also, welcome to DVC addonitis 😉

😂😂 yeah. I’ve been casually watching for a 50pt contract since last MW, and this one was too good to pass up, even thought it wasn’t the UY I wanted

The biggest lie of my life was when I said I only needed 100 points. 320 additional points later, I'm already out of points in my 2024 and 2025 uy...

I did ALL the math to make 100pts work when we bought our first contract. I really feel like 150 will be a good enough number for us though. Don’t get me wrong, more would be amazing, but being a mostly responsible adult is important.

Weekly wrap up:

Things didn’t get much better this week. DD is every bit of a pushy 5yo (listening? Following directions? Why would she do any of those things?) and I’m losing my mind trying to manage it. DH worked his last big football referee week, DS1 came home from university for the weekend for the first time, and then my body wasn’t having it this morning.

Tuesday: 45min on the treadmill while DD napped. Tuesday was bad enough that I gave her a kids melatonin and made her take a nap. The run was unremarkable, but it appears I’m going to have to clean the belt/deck in the near future because of the amount of food crumbs and chip fragments my darling children have gotten on it. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Friday: 2mi outside, 1mi on the treadmill. Wooooo. More treadmill when the weather was nice, but DH wasn’t having it with the idea of me running after dark.

Sunday: 4mi run, 1.8mi walk. My stomach was off this morning, so my original Saturday night planning to do 2hrs (2:30 if it was going well) went right out the window. The 4mi went well enough, but my stomach started to bother me again, so I walked it in.

And that brings me to my vent for the day: the whole “zone 2” running trend. It’s everywhere. I see sooooo many posts and videos about it on social media and I’m just sick of it at this point because most of them are just like “you just need to run slower.” Now, if they are using that to say things like ‘most people are overrunning their easy runs and this is a tool to help that’ it would be one thing. But they’re not. Also, I walked 1.8mi today, and my HR was in zone 3 for most of it. And that just feels, to me, like yet another thing that is not for the slower runners. However, that little nugget of info (walking briskly, but not with a ton of effort puts me into Z3) really makes me not care if I spend a lot of my runs in Z3.

New shoes (finally) showed up today. I’ve been eyeing the NB rebels since I really like my due cell supercomp trainers and wondered if part of what I like is the foam, and not just the massive stack and carbon plate. I waited and waited for this color to become available (since the super pretty pink ones are only available in Europe and Australia) and they pushed back the release date at least 3x and then I missed out on my size ON release day. When my size came back in stock, I was quick to purchase. I had briefly tried these on in a local store (to confirm sizing) but was under a time constraint that day and didn’t pay too much attention to anything other than sizing.

First impression: the color in person is pretty dead on with their online pic (but not in my pics.) Yay!

However. This upper is super thin and pretty see-through. I am a little bit of a big-toe-lifter and that makes me nervous about durability. See my fingers in there? 😬

And looking closer, there some discrepancy with the more reinforced portions of the upper around the edge of the toe box between the shoes.

My bottom arrow wouldn’t cooperate, but you can see the top shoe has a section where the knit is thinner than the bottom shoe. I don’t know if this is something I should really be worried about or not.

Also, it took almost 2 weeks to get these after ordering them directly from New Balance. That’s a long time when I can get them from most retailers in like 4 days.

That does seem like a defect. I'd for sure reach out to them about this. But also maybe do a treadmill test run to make sure you love them and have the right size in case you decide to just return them anyway?

Yeah that’s my plan for tomorrow (treadmill test run). I feel like it might mostly be cosmetic, but I don’t really want to have $140 shoes rip out on me a month in.

Weekly wrap up—what is wrong with my body? I had a weird stomach and no shortage of general low-level anxious feelings this week. One night I woke up at 2am and was just…..awake until 5am, and then got a little nap in until DD woke me up at 630. Yaaay. Tack on some weirdness with my lower back and hips, and I think that also migrated into my left knee because that’s been achey this week as well.

Last Sunday was covered in a pp, so I’ll just recap with 4mi run, 30min walk, stomach was weird

Monday: 2mi walk with the pupper, and then 4mi run. It was soooo hot. While I would have preferred to just take the dog on the 4mi run, he tends to just randomly lie down after about 2.5mi when it’s hot. That’s very inconvenient for running, so he just got a walk because oh my gosh the whining has been out of control lately.

Tuesday: 1hr, 11min run. 5.25mi, and I ran the “hilly route” which means I had 364ft of gain, mostly found on 2 hills. My new Strava segment reveals that I’m 4th on the list for my nearest hill, and the 2 women in front of my are Canadians who were camping or airbnb’ing down the road. This run was shoehorned in between DH getting home from work, and heading out for an evening bow hunting sit. I was officially 1min late getting home; should been faster on the hill!

Wednesday-Saturday, no running. Friday I was parent-of-the-day at preschool and then worked the XC meet races for our regional (division 2 and division 3.) Both our boys and girls teams won as a team and will be competing at State Finals next weekend; we are hoping for top-5 finish for both teams. The girls are more likely to pull that off (possibly runners up?) and our boys team should be top-10. My legs have been feeling borderline RLS-like, something I experienced during one of my pregnancies, so I need to get back on my magnesium. I used a topical magnesium spray on Saturday night and got some relief, but the achiness just feels like it’s coming out of nowhere, and changing shoes hasn’t really impacted anything.

Sunday (today): 60min treadmill run + 30min treadmill walk. Today was finally shoe-testing day. I purchased some Saucony Triumph 19s to use for refereeing this year since the 1080s I got last year were definitely dark gray and NOT black (good enough for mostly middle school games, but not a great look for high school) and the previously pictured rebel v4s.

I started with the triumphs and my immediate reaction was that my pinky toe was falling off the edge of the sole. This feeling was less noticeable as the run went on, but these feel significantly narrower than my usual 1080s. I tried to not over react because I’ve been in 1080s for basically everything for 3 years now, so new shoes are just going to feel weird. I did 30min and they felt ok. I could make these work. If I were running in them I’d probably want a half size larger, but they seemed ok.

Then I switched to the rebels. They were noticeably lighter, and the toe box was definitely wider. However, these seemed to feel too big. *sigh* Also, the arch was significantly different and higher feeling than the triumphs, and I felt like if my heel touched the ground at all that I had a big ramp to overcome to get back to being able to toe off. This feeling diminished the longer I wore them, but it was definitely there and I didn’t like it. The tongue on those is integrated into the upper and since I lace with a heel lock, it felt too short and the laces kept riding up off it.

When I finished the run, I switched back to the triumphs to see how they would do with walking since there’s a decent amount of that in refereeing. The answer: not good. Whe I started running 3.5 years ago I started in NB 880s. And then I developed this weird Achilles thing there the padded part of the top of the heel cup would basically hammer in my Achilles and make it swell in that soecific area. The triumphs immediately started doing that when walking and not running, probably due to the fact that I stride forward more when walking. Anyhow, these are getting boxed back up and returned. And I’m really on the fence about the rebels too. If I “keep” them I need to exchange for a half size smaller, and I’m not excited about waiting another month to get shoes that may or may not work in the correct size.

I really want to get away from the 1080 because I feel like it’s become too squishy and more of a “lifestyle shoe” than a running shoe, and something lighter would be great. But I have yet to find something else I like that’s still being made (cough cough supercomp trainer v1.)

Tangentially, DS2 asked for gels to try pre-race. I explained all of the reasoning why they really aren’t going to do anything for him physically, but for $6 was willing to get a few for him to try because if he thinks they’ll work, maybe it’ll help continue to pull him out of his mental funk.

On friday he ran another PR (17:50) and said it was the first meet this year where he “didn’t feel terrible and like I was dying half way through.” What may have actually caused this? Being on an iron supplement for 4 weeks now. He was low-normal a month ago and we decided to do a moderate dose (more supportive than a “omg we need to get your iron up!” dose) and see how he felt, and then pull back to ever other or every 3 days for the off season. What does he think it was ? Chocolate huma.

Have you tried any Asics? I'm a big fan of the Novablasts - I've run in the 3 and 4. I feel like Asics are generally pretty roomy in the forefoot.

Good luck to the XC kids this weekend!

I haven't tried asics yet because I was under the impression that they were a more narrow shoe brand in general. And while I *want* to get away from NB/1080s it's hard because they basically make every color in regular AND wide, where other brands only give one option for wide shoes, and it's usually black. I also feel terrible going to my local fleet feet to try shoes on, and then going to buy them somewhere else (usually because I can find some amazon "like new" for 30% or more off the msrp.)

Hmm, I will say I also have a pair of Asics Noosa Tris, and I think they're a bit narrower. The Novablasts are more roomy, but I also don't wear a wide normally.

Wrapping it up!

Monday: 95min run. This went OK. I know I need to make sure I'm getting the long long-runs in this month and next month, and it's usually pretty tempting to cut things short or procrastinate until I don't have time to get the whole thing in before I have to pick DD up from school (or something similar) so that's going to be priority 1 going into these last 2 months of training.

Tuesday: 60min run + 30min treadmill walk. I think that doing a run and then hopping on the tread for a walk might be a great way for me to get the time-on-feet/mileage I need and not be overdoing things during basketball season.* While November is lighter in scheduling than I'd like (only 6 dates), December has myself of DH refereeing every weeknight until school ends for Christmas break. There might be a couple of Saturdays that pop up in there, but as of right now there are none.

Wednesday: Wednesday was the preschool halloween party, and then I came home and fell asleep on the couch. My sleep this week wasn't very good, and it was all catching up, PLUS I've started to notice that I have a few days during my luteal phase where I am completely wiped out (also, itchy inner ear which is apparently a super-fun perimenopause symptom!) So rather than beating myself up about not getting in my 45min, I accepted the nap and called it a day.

Thursday: Trick or Treating. Probably walked 2.5 miles with DD and DS3 (and DH, SIL, and 2 nieces) and packing for state finals.

Friday: 90min round trip driving to take DS3 and DD to my parents, then a 4hr drive to the hotel the team was staying at the night before. These kids are so much fun, and all of the boys dressed in suits (colorful suits, might I add!) and the girls in fancy dresses for their team dinner and all of the parents went to Texas Roadhouse because they were the only place that could accommodate a group of 20.

Saturday: Chased kids around Michigan International Speedway at XC state finals. This is a truly horrible course to spectate at. It was basically ideal runner conditions, something that is RARE there; usually it's cold and wet (for part of the day) and windy. For the boys team, it was about 45deg, sunny, and still and when the girls ran it was the same, but about 50deg. The boys team beat their ranking and finished 6th, and the girls finished one spot below their ranking, also finishing 6th. DS2 was the alternate for the boys team and it was a hard day for him, knowing that if he had gotten his mental game together sooner it would have been him running. Still, he was a good teammate and we are looking forward to one more unattached meet next weekend at a fast course, and then indoor track season. And then we had the 4hr drive home, and then the 90min trip to pick kids up from my parents.

Sunday (today): DH and I have mandatory referee training in the middle of the day.

Tangential to MW: the in-laws have [finally] booked flights, will be down in the afternoon instead of late evening. I asked SIL about a few dining options (seeing if there was somewhere specific she wanted her post-HM celebration meal) and she said, "You've never steered me wrong, so you can just decide." Some evening brainpower, a lot of looking at menus, DH and I discussing the merits of eating somewhere new vs places we know we like and finding what we think is a reasonable balance of the 2, and I think we have a plan. Now I just have to wrangle all of the ressies. ALSO, our waitlist came through, and we went from a Water/Garden View to a Boardwalk View for the night after the marathon. Will it be particularly useful since we are doing AH and MK? Probably not. But it checks off another resort. Now I just need our new contract to pass ROFR and for everyone to get their closing docs turned in ASAP so I can maybe use some of our new points toward our 2br stay. Basically I need it to pass on Monday, and for all of the paperwork to be turned in Tuesday. I may also be lobbing DH to run "just the marathon" in 2026 with our new points. We'll see how that goes...

Wait, itchy inner ear is a perimenopause symptom??? I shouldn’t be surprised, but geez.

Seriously. Who comes up with this stuff? I have the most random symptoms, and they all end up being perimenopause-related.

Wait, itchy inner ear is a perimenopause symptom??? I shouldn’t be surprised, but geez.
Yeah i guess it’s something to do with mucous and stuff drying up with the hormone swings. Drives me nuts.
