I've been saving all my coins and taking them with me when I go to put money into our trip savings account every two weeks. I went today and emptied out all the coins in my wallet and had $17.05 in change! That was after taking out enough quarters last week to fill a mini M&Ms tube 3/4 of the way full with pennies and quarters for the penny press machines. It's amazing how much change one can accumulate over time. It's a pretty painless way to help get that trip paid for. :cool1:

We have one of those tubs that cotton candy comes in from Wal-Mart that DH and I dump our change into every night. DH counted it the other night and it had around $15 in it so far. I can't wait to get it fuller since it's only less than an inch full.

Great job on saving!

DH and I have been saving change for many years. We put quarters into a tube bank (had $ marks so I know when I have $20 and it's time to roll), dimes and nickels go into one of those huge glass water jugs. And pennies go into an old Nescafé instant coffee jar - when it's very near the top, it hold $10. We make a point of never spending change. If something costs only 5 cents, I give them $1 and the change goes into our savings. A fast and painless way to save for vacation.

Hehe! Silly as it sounds I keep all of our change in a dog-treat container that we emptied long ago; nice fat round plastic cylinder, and not tootoo big so it's not discouraging to my DD9 filling up too slowly. SHe loves to help roll and bring it to the bank to add to our savings account :)

I just cleaned out my teen boys bedroom last week. So we could add some shevling, remove some pieces that no longer work for them (small desk, etc).

Found: $48 in quarters ALONE, plus $15 in other coins.

Since they are slobs (19 and 17) all $$ found is a tip for the maid. :flower: :flower:

I'm surprised to see a couple of you say you roll your change. Our bank tells us not to bother because they're just going to unroll it and run it through the counter anyway. We kind of like just going in there with the bag of coins from the previous two weeks and getting that surprise when they tell us the total. LOL Including my kids in the process of saving for this trip has been a great experience for all of us. It's really teaching them the importance of saving for things they want and I love watching the expressions on their faces when we get the passbook back from the teller and they see the new total. When we get home we pull out our budget and see if we have enough in there to cross off another expense. My parents never included me in anything to do with money, I just always knew it was there when we needed or wanted something. I think my kids will be much better off when they go out into the world having been included in things like this.

Our bank is a smaller local one and it does not have a change sorting machine. We have to roll our own and take it to the bank. They do not unroll it and count it again there.
DD got a change sorter for Christmas and is eager to give it a try. ::yes::

THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Misery loves company and I have 2 teen boys (15 and 13) who share an attic bedroom. Their room is very large but somehow they manage to mess it up, big time. Unless I go up there and "pick up" several times a week it gets to the point where you can barely walk!
I never thought of keeping the change I find, though! I should start doing that. I'll tell them it's the "tip" for the maidservice!!!!!!! Great idea!

I love saving the change. We use an upright watercooler bottle. When it gets to the point that I can barely lift it to vacuum behind it, I know we've got a "good chunk of change" (pun intended) in there! I'm gonna let it keep building until we go in Sept and then be surprised when I cash it in.

This and the cash back credit cards are my 2 favorite ways to painlessly save for Disney trips!

I have upgraded to an empty water bottle from a water dispenser
I have barely started filling it
I have already cashed in $300+ in change twice in the last several years
It really adds up fast.

Happy change hunting.

I always save my spare change and turn it in at the bank too.....on one trip, I had over $50.00 and didn't even realize it!! I was so excited! And I put the change in a separate envelope when I go to Disney for my DTD shopping, it's like 'mad money' for me and I go nuts and get fun and silly stuff for myself! :thewave:

we go to wdw every 2 years, we save change in mop bucket i had about 700 in change, other half had about 400 so save it does help a lot

Our 4 yo emptis our pockets everynight to put in his disney bank. We started this last June and we took our trip Dec.16. He had over $200 :earseek: to spend on whatecer he wanted to spend it on. Luckily, he had no concept of how many things $200 could buy in 4yo treasure, so we returned over $100 to the Disney Savings and will apply it to his birthday Disney trip in June. We have another bank started. :jumping4:

LOL!!! Any time someone asks my 5 year old when we are going to Disney she tells them "when the money jar is full". We have one of those big water cooler jugs that we fill with coin. DH seems to have a pocket full of change every evening and it all goes in the money jar.

Commerce bank has the free machine to dump your coin into. For our last trip I had over $300 in coin in there and the jug was not even half full. That usually ends up being our character meal money, LOL!

Gah, noone ever mentioned that to me. The bank is pretty small (Credit Union actually) but maybe I'll ask 'em if I'm wasting my time!

Don't forget anything they leave in their pockets that comes out in the wash is yours too!

I do this all the time, it's usually my massage money! I have a crystal vase in my bedroom that when it's full holds $140, enough money for a massage and a nice lunch. When I booked our Christmas trip this past year it was a last minute decision (October) for my DD Christmas gift, and the vase was empty. At that point I stopped using any change, it all went in the vase every night. If something came to $4.02 cents, I paid with a $5. Well, the vase overflowed and I started using a mayonaise jar as well. The day before we left I took the change to the bank and had $175! Gave it all to DD(18) as her Disney Mad Money. She used it to buy herself a stitch sweatshirt, and christmas gifts for her grandparents, BF, and little cousins.

I'm a big fan of change jars. Before our honeymoon (several years ago) we cashed our change jar in for over $400. Last October we cashed it before we went to Niagara Falls and we had almost $200 and then 2 weeks ago I cashed in before DH and I went to Vegas and we had $170!!! We starting all over again for our trip to the World!!!

Our bank (PNC Bank) has a few locations with change counters in the lobby. You just dump your change in and it prints out a voucher which you can cash or deposit in your account. It is free for PNC customers or I think they charge a 5% fee for non-customers (still cheaper than the Coinstar machines!)

Our change jar is a ball canning jar. I bought puffy Disney stickers from Dollar Tree, and my girls decorated it. I also keep a change sorter next to the jar. When I fill the change sorter, I roll it and put it in the jar. I also put cash in the jar. I sometimes do embroidery work for others and when they pay me, it goes in the jar. I had a yard sale in Dec. and all that money went in to the jar. I think I have around $400.00, but I haven't actually counted it yet. Thats on my list of things to do in the next couple of days!
