Every little bit helps!

This past Christmas my sister gave me a gift that was my FAVORITE! of all the gifts I got.

It was a large ball canning jar inside a heavy material blue and white gingham(?) "bag" with a castle embroidered on it (it looks like Cinderella's castle in blue and white) and over the top is embroidered the words "Vacation Fund"! It's also tied around the top where the lid is so that the opening of the jar where the change goes is defined.

I was so excited when I opened that gift not only because it came from the heart and was very well thought out but because now I have an "official" trip fund change jar. I told DH don't put any money in there that you might think you want out because once it goes in, it goes strictly to the ING Disney Fund! See we had a change jar that he and I both had made the bad habit of dipping in.

Anyway, one night I was sitting in here on the computer and I heard the old change jar rattling and the sound of coins kerplunking into my new Vacation Fund jar. I walked out into the living room and here DH was filling up the jar with change. :lovestruc

I was so happy. Now we only use dollars and all the change that we get goes into the ball jar. It is so heavy now, I'm going to have to roll soon and start all over. :flower:

Last year, Dh and I had saved up $600 in change. We used it to buy things we normally wouldn't get, rent the limo, a very nice meal, etc. I've been saving since July and have almost $250 plus I have $120 Disney reward dollars from my Disney Visa. Every little bit helps!

DH used to have a friend at work weld two empty coffee cans together (1 lb size), then cut a very small slit in the bottom of one (now the top of the two together). He was working a lot of overtime at the time and would put in various bills on payday, depending on the amount of OT worked and what our expenses were for that upcoming week. On Fridays we each got a 'draw' as pocket/gas/lunch money and Thursday nights we would ceremoniously deposit our 'leftover' bills before starting Friday with the set amount again.

Our change went into a big beer stein on DH bureau and we would roll every other month for deposit into savings.

The can money, all bills, was for vacation and we would open it the week before a trip to count it out and make final plans. What fun it was to open up and pour out a mountain of bills. Usually $600+. Some years, lots of OT and lots of 20s, other years, stacks and stacks of singles. Then we'd weld two more cans and start again.

The caveat of course was that we could not see the progress being made and 'guesstimate' what was in there, nor could anyone 'dip' without using a can opener and being obvious (although there was that one desperate morning with a thin knife blade to lead a few dollars back out the slit )

Don't forget anything they leave in their pockets that comes out in the wash is yours too!

I got smart with that one--They do their own laundry starting at age 13. I'll forego the coins I would find if I don't have the responsibility of keeping them in clean clothes! LOL :flower1:

I LOVE THIS!!!

My DH teases me mercilessly because I don't spend change - even when my total is just a few cents over a full dollar (which is when he teases me the most). I'm so glad to see all the other people who do it also. I can't wait to show him that I'm not weird, or if I am, that I'm not the only one. :earboy2:

Hi  When ever we know we are going on holidays I start saving our change. So when its time to go, we cash them in then our two daughters have thier own extra spending money. Just remember every penny counts.
Though we are from Ontario, Canada alot of places over the border doesn't take our change. Down here it doesn't matter. :earsboy: :earsgirl: :earsgirl: :earsgirl:
