Everest for a 6 year old... Too scary?

We are surprising my DS with a trip to WDW for his 6th birthday in November. He is a Disney "expert", as this will be his 7th trip, and he really wants to go on Everest (he's been watching it go up over the last couple of years, and now it will finally be open).

My question is... is it too scary for young children? My son has been on all the "mountains" in WDW, going on Space Mtn twice on our trip last spring (I don't think it was his favorite... that would be BTMRR). However, he has only been on the Haunted Mansion once in the last 3 visits because he's not a big fan of the things that pop out at you.

So, are the special effects/darkness in the ride too scary?

Sorry don't have an answer but I would like to know too since my 6yr old son wants to ride it as well, now he has not been to Disney before but he's been on tame kids coasters and he loves them, I plan to take him on Dinosaur ride (one of my fav rides!) first and see how he handles that one and then decide on Everest.

My 5 year old DD went on it in August and LOVED it!! In fact, she went on 2x -- once with me and once with DH. She tried to convince my 10 year old DD to go on, but she wouldn't.

My 6 year old DD went on it this past summer and it was too much for her. She is willing to try anything, but after riding this one, she complained of a headache for the rest of the day. She has never had a headache before and quite honestly it scared the heck out of me. My kids will not be riding this again until they are much older.

I was quite disoriented on it myself. I don't know what it was, but I couldn't tell whether we were going backwards, forwards, upside down, or sideways while riding it. I do have a messed up ear which could possibly be throwing off my equilibrium though.

I dont' think it was scary.. if you discount the roller coaster factor, I don't think that the yeti jumps out at you.. it's not a popping out kind of thing. There is some time in the dark, but not too long.

You can also go to you tube.. and watch a video of it, and see what you think.

I haven't been on it but I'm planning on taking my 5yo DD next month. She can't wait!

My 7 year old went on this a few weeks ago. He was fine on it and claimed he even liked it but after we got off he complained that he was a little dizzy & he didn't want to ride it again.
Not sure if he was just having an off day or if it was a combination of just having a big buffet breakfast & then a wild ride
He was fine the rest of the day though.
Before we left he wanted to go on it again, but we didn't have time because we had to get over to Hoop Dee Doo.

Btw--this is the same child that went on Rock n' Roller Coaster 7x later on during the trip and never once complained he was dizzy.

I say if your child wants to try it, let them!
you never know, if could turn into their favorite ride.

I showed it to both of my DDs (5 & 8) on YouTube. Before watching the video, they didn't want to ride it because they thought it would be too scary, but now they do.

My DS6 rode it, loved it and couldn't wait to do it again.
This is a child who was shaking with fright when I took him on Dinosaur. (talk about feeling like a bad Mom!)

I'd say try it first solo, then go with your gut. You know your child better than anyone.

it scared my 5 yr old to death he was white when he got off it. I felt really bad because he wanted to ride. needless to say, he said he would never ride it again.

That is GREAT advice! I wish that I had done that, lol! When my DD kept complaining of a headache, I felt SOOOOO horrible and scared for her. I know that if I rode it first alone I would not have let her ride it. I'm just thankful that I didn't allow my 4 year old to ride it! He wanted to go so bad but I told him that he was too young. He is tall so he met the height requirement but he had just turned 4 two months prior to our trip.

DD6 refused to ride it. Of course, she also refused to ride Splash Mountain. Friends of our were down at Disney the same time we were, and they have a son in DD6's class. We ran into them Thursday evening in Epcot, before we headed to MK for Wishes. She asked him if he had done Splash, and he said he was doing it tomorrow. She announced that she was doing it tonight, and dragged us onto it when we got to MK. She loved it.

Her friend had done Everest and loved it, but we weren't going back to AK that trip. She'll probably do it next year.

Here's the thing. You know your child. The Yeti does appear before the end of the ride, but it's possible to miss him if your head is down. The backwards part is a bit disorientating, but only because you've probably never done it before.

If you think your child can do it, then by all means do it. He'll probably love it. Probably.

We took my friends 5 year old GD in May and she LOVED it. As a matter of fact, when my own 2.5 year old GD saw our picture, she asked my why Jenny (the grandma) looked so scared, and I told her it was because the ride was scary; her reply: "Then why is the little girl laughing?"

My 6yo laughed and yelled the whole ride, he loved it. I loved it also. My 4yo cried because she was too short to ride it.

However, it did make me VERY dizzy when it was over, for several minutes, unlike any of the other coasters, even RNRC. I think the Gs on it may hit a bit higher because of tighter loops, or else the backwards bit messed with my brain blood flow. We rode Goofy's Barnstormer, which has a pretty tight-though-short turn, four times straight with no dizziness. I'm a little afraid (or maybe paranoid) that ExEv may be the next ride for which someone with an unknown pre-existing condition dies after riding. If any of the other WDW coasters make one moderately dizzy for a few minutes, I would advise against riding ExEv.

My almost 7 yo loved the ride. He went 3 times. His favorite ride is BTMRR. He doesn't care for scarey rides but loved this one. (there is a lot of darkness in the ride if that matters)

we went end of september and my 6 year old son LOVED EE. It was too scary for daddy, but my son wanted to keep riding it. He didn't seem to be bothered by the backwards part, and said "we only went backwards for a second"----

I can hardly predict what my own kids will decide they want to ride (DD7 went to RnR our very first day but would not go near Splash. Go figure!) much less someone elses' children. All of mine rode EE and LOVED (loved, loved, loved) it. They were very hesitant once we reached the point of actually getting on but pushed through and were so glad they did. It really is one of their favorite rides.

Well - we took our neice on it in Sept - she's 6 1/2 - Was a little bit worried at first - after all - it's not our child & we also promised to return her in the same condition we got her in

No worries - she loved it - and so did her older friend Keith (age 10). She also did BTMRR and got off and said - Is that IT We did veto Space Mountain since you don't sit next to them for the ride. EE - is a very gentle rollercoaster - but in the dark part of the time and you do go backwards.

The only ride she didn't like was TOT . Now we told her EXACTLY what happens ... but she insisted on going on the elevator ride - Well at the end of the first ride - we had to remind her to breath - it did scare her. Of course the last ride at WDW was TOT - she wanted to make sure she didn't like it - didn't scare her as much but will try it again next year at DLP
