Just looking for stories of impending doom and lay-offs

The last few weeks have been dismal at my small Mom& Pop bizness. I only work part time-but its a good pre-retirement job for me:).Edited-I am retired from my first career-DH has a great job-I just like to work :)

Its Christmass and lots of stock has been ordered and nobody is coming into the shop:sad2:

Biggest problems-Boss refuses to advertise, since its been around forever

A huge store opened 2 years ago that offers similar merchandise-they advertise heavily and sell high volume at low cost (lots of Mexican imports)-boss is still in the mindset that we are a "high end" 'exclusive " venue and people will pay for quality. NOT ANYMORE.:sad2:

The manager got so frustrated yesterday, that we had no sales, that she went to the Huge store on her lunch break and said the place was packed with shoppers ((sigh))

Ugh - that is a scary feeling. I previously worked for a large company that went through several rounds of layoffs. People started getting so paranoid that going into work felt like being on a reality show - people were forming alliances and stabbing each other in the back constantly.

It adds so much stress to the worry of losing your job already. The only advice I can share from my experience is to try to prepare for the possibility without letting it consume you. I hope things turn out for the best for you and your fellow employees!

Oh yeah. Its very stressful. It sounds like you are fortunate in that you don't "need" to work, which should make it less stressful for you, but you'll pick up on the stress of your coworkers. And I've been through layoffs - one bad enough that they had psychologists in to work with the survivors. And I've been part of the process - knowing who is on the list before they do.

Yes! I'm a NYS employee and we faced huge budget cuts this past year which resulted in lay-offs. It is very stressful and you feel like you are putting your life on hold until you know if you are "safe". Then you have survivors guilt when you still have a job at the end of the day.

In this economy no one is ever 100% safe. We tried to learn from the scare and alter our savings and spending. Sending you good thoughts and wishing you and your family a happy holiday.
