If we are staying near the Magnifiant Mile (n. dearborn at the river) - about how much cab fare should I expect to pay to get to the Museum of Science and Industry??

Hi!
I'm sorry I can't answer the fare question. Although, I don't think it would be very expensive as it is not a very long trek (as I recall).
However, a friendly word of warning........I have been in cabs in Tijuana Mex., New Orleans (driver on drugs!) & NYC (cab hit another)....BUT Chicago was, by far, the most frightening cab experience of all!!! The difference is that those other cities had so much traffic, you couldn't get up enough speed to do any real damage. Not true for Chicago when I was there! Those guys must have gone 90 anytime they had the chance:eek: !!! Thank goodness nothing happened, but it definitely got the adrenaline pumping!!!................I'm sure it's not true of ALL the drivers. Just remember to buckle up if you have the option!!:D
By the way....I loved Chicago!!!!! We got to watch the July 4th fireworks over the Lake etc....I didn't get to spend nearly enough time there!! Have a great time!!

I'm thinking $10 more or less. It depends on whether you get stuck on Lake Shore Drive in the construction. However, Chicago is running their free trolleys. I know they go to the Museum Campus (which includes the aquarium and the Field Museum). You might want to check with the Hotel to see if the trolleys run to the Science & Industry (which is a bit further south).

And Diva is absolutely right about our cab drivers. Chicago cabs can go from zero to 90 in less than 10 seconds.

Try to get to the Field Museum too. There is a baseball exhibit opening. There is some Egyptian art on display too. Oh, and the "Wild Reef" just opened at the aquarium.

OMG,

I was never so scared of being in a taxi as I was in Chicago!

I had to close my eyes! No seat belts either.

Wow, not exactly looking forward to that experience. Had a similar one in Las Vegas (I must say that a third cab driver we had there was much better so I guess it just depends)

The free trolly does go to the Museum Campus (we were just on them this past weekend and I pick up a map). You may have to get on one line near Chicago Street and change at one of their stops. They have 3 lines, red is the shopping line - Michigan to State and back around; blue is like a zoo/entertainment line - Lincoln Park, Peggy Nodebart Nature Museum and Navy Pier; and yellow which goes to the Museum Campus I believe. I can look for the map tonight and let you know tomorrow. Just ask the Trolley driver or the Trolley person that will be standing at the stop (or should be) - they will be happy to let you know where the stops are. You think cab drivers drive fast - wait til you get on the Trolley or bus  j/k

Also the buses are $1.50 per person or you can get daily passes for $5 and several day passes too. Kids I think is $.75. I use the busses all the time when we go downtown and the drivers are good about directing to where a stop is if you aren't on the right one.

I took a cab from Dearborn to Columbus/Balbo which was only like 5 blocks (it was 4:30AM) and it was $3.something, maybe $3.10. I believe it was like $2.10 the first mile and then maybe $.25 every 1/4 mile after.

You think Chicago cab drivers are bad....go to Boston - ours are tame!!!!!
