Ever use a storage unit?

Just google "Mini storage near me" and you'll find some places that have the prices listed on their website. Talk with your insurance about getting coverage moved to the units. Check out things like the vacuum seal storage bags, or just the ones you press the air out of. Document everything you put in storage, go crazy taking pics.

These units are huge money makers, they count on your forgetting about the stuff inside and you just keep paying and paying.

Good luck!

I believe that storage facilities are often used to keep unnecessary items. Make sure you truly need the things you're paying to store.

I try to keep an uncluttered house. If I find myself needing storage, it better be for seasonal decorations and fit in the attic. If we have things that fallen into the 'unused' category, they get donated or thrown away.

I could see using a storage unit if we were to move houses, but only temporarily.

Absolutely, I share the same approach! The last time I used a storage facility was during our move when we needed to store some things while renovating the new house. It made me realize I didn’t need a lot of what was in there, so I ended up getting rid of a bunch of stuff. By the way, having good self-storage software solutions made the whole process a lot smoother.

I found a storage unit worked well for us for summers between college years since we don't have a garage or a big house. I chose a unit close to the school vs home for practicality but with the same company prices were way less near the school. The storage unit only came with climate control. First floor cost more so we did a higher floor. I believe it is a 4x5 unit. It is under $200 for the 4 months but it is a 4 month rate. If we decided to go past that date it would increase a bit. Once my dd graduates I'm excited to get rid of at least some of the items.

A couple thoughts - if you go to the UHAUL site on the bottom of the website is something like "Helpers" where you can get quotes on guys to help you load/unload with prices, dates, and reviews - I, and clients, have used it happily for years. Second, if you rent a UHaul they often include one free month at a local storage - super helpful if your are truly doing a short term storage. Like many have said - declutter makes far more sense for most people who spend more to Store than their Stuff is worth ;) If storing, I would always set a drop dead date to empty the unit upfront so there is a plan in place from Day 1 to move it out.
