Ever lose a tonail?

Wow .. I kind of forgot that I posted this ... you guys have so many great stories and advice about my TOEnail (lol ... not sure why I spelled it "tonail").

I think I'm going to go ahead and let it be and not *drive a red-hot needle through it* :faint: unless I absolutely have to. Much as I relish the idea of draining some pus from my toe :scared: , I think I'm gonna leave it be for now and see what happens. It's not really very painful at all -- just discolored. So it sounds like hopefully it may not fall off -- we'll see.

I hate to say it but I lost my big toe nail by sitting a running Hoover vaccuum on my foot. It just ripped that thing off. This was back in the 70's but I remember it being very unpleasant.

I lost about 1/2 a nail last year and have no idea why it just fell off and I felt it catching on my sheet. I have psoriasis and I know that can affect the nail but it grew back fine.

What I did was take an emory board and sand the edges as smooth as I could very gently. I kept doing this as needed until it grew all the way in.

You might need to cover it with a band aid if you can't get it smoothed out at first.

Dang, I hate toenails. What purpose do they surve anyway? We don't climb trees anymore. :confused3

I lost 2 when I trained for my first half marathon. Now I only get really good running shoes that I go get professionally fitted for. Haven't lost a toenail since :)

lol. Not to be totally disgusting, but I banged my big toe the other day. After the pain wore off, I noticed that half the tonail is purple/black. It almost looks like someone drew a line down my toenail! Weird!

Now I'm wondering ... is it gonna fall off??? And if so, will just half of it fall off? :rotfl2:

Ever had this happen?

Yes...yesterday :rotfl2: Funny thing is...I had no idea I'd damaged it. I had polish on, so if it was black, I never knew it:confused3 I was just walking to get the phone, caught it on something, and my big tonail came right off!!! There is a new one underneath, sort of thinner than a real tonail, but nothing sore. My old tonail is still there right up by the cuticle. I don't know if that part will fall off :confused3

The only thing I can think of is that before christmas we skated at Rocerfeller Center and the skates were too tight, but I didn't want to exchange them since the line was so long. So perhaps that killed my tonail???

Good luck with yours!
Katy

Lost two big toenails twice. The first time was when I was really young and while throwing a tantrum. I somehow managed to get it caught in a hole of an afghan while kicking and it came out. The second time I was on vacation in Canada with my family (I was probably about 11-12) and we were coming back from the pool. I was barefoot and my sister opened the door to our hallway and door went right over my toe. We first went to the Canadian hospital but there was some problem with them taking our insurance so we drove into New York where the doctor taped it back on(?!). Had difficult with an ingrown toenail after that.

there is new nail under it.. just rip it off.. I was a chicken too! Finally it got caught on a piece of carpet and came off :crazy2: It didn't hurt or feel strange at all. Poking holes in it? Oh no way dude (ette) :scared:

I can't do it! I'm such a chicken! I can lift at least half of it off, but the part that's still attached kinda hurts! I'm afraid it will really hurt if I rip it! I'll keep trying today.

I had a toenail fall off. No injury or anything. Just one day it was gone. It grew back though. It was strange.

I'm a runner with hammertoes - as such, I regard toenails as being largely optional equipment. :)

I haven't lost the big toenail (yet), but I am usually minus 3 or 4. They grow back (or would, if I stopped running), but it may take some time.

I was a chicken too.. it freaked me out. :crazy2:

I lost mine after dropping a bowling ball on it when I was about 10. Can I saw OUCH every time something would touch the area where the nail used to be until it grew back. BTW, it takes forever to grow back compared to fingernails, IMO.

My Mom also lost her toenail because her foot got caught under a door and they had to cut the nail off because it got mangled. It grew back too...

Yes, whacked my big toe in the middle of the night on a laundry basket. It hurt for a while, then my toenail fell off on its own. I wouldn't force it off. If you think you can loosen it gently, go ahead, but I wouldn't just rip it. After the nail was gone, it was a bit tender, but I could see a new nail growing in its place. It was October when I hurt myself, but it was almost until the next summer until the nail grew enough to look normal.
