Ever have highlights through a cap?

Vs. foil?

I'm thinking about divorcing my hairdresser (and I hope she doesn't lurk here! ) and I found another one I'd like to go to. She only does highlights through a cap, because she says you can't get close enough to the scalp using foil. I have long hair and I've only had it foiled before. I'm picturing a swimmer's cap with lots of holes in it and a crochet-hook like thing to painfully pull my hair through. Am I off base?

I've done them at home. Its not painful as long as you brush your hair ALOT before you put the cap on. I actually just had foils done 3 days ago and I'm surprised they didn't get close to the scalp. I already look like I have roots? I'm happy with the color.. just not how far away she stayed away from the end.

Yeah, I always feel like I have roots when I walk away too, so I end up going every 8 weeks. Maybe if I go with foil I can go less often?

I'm a Tetris addict too! I have stayed up WAY too late many nights playing it!

OP and yes it hurts!!! I hadit done once and NEVER again!!! My hiardresser highlights my hair often and never uses foils just a cake decorating type of thing and it goes fast and looks nice. IMO (He is a Clariol color consultant and a head of a salon)

Maybe it depends on the hairdresser but I found that I started with roots when the cap was used. With foils I have not had that problem. My biggest complaint is that I go to the salon to relax not be in pain while having my hair done. I found the cap to be unpleasant in areas although not extremely painful.

I have mine done with a cap and I like it better than foil. My hair is just above the shoulders. It gets close to the scalp, if the hairdresser knows what they are doing it shouldn't hurt. Maybe if you have a sensitive scalp it would.

I've also had foil...takes way too long and the cost of foiling vs the cap was way too high. I actually have a darker color put on mine so I guess I do low lights. I use a cinnamon color on my brown with lots of gray hair.

My mom and I used to do each others hair through a cap. It looked good with our stonewashed jeans and Poison shirts... We got really good at it but Foil is much kinder and gentler, and the highlights look better IMO. Hair naturally lighten in chunks/sections not tiny sections. As another poster said, the darker colors probably look better, we did super light with our dark hair. But our scalps toughened up and got used to it.

I had highlights through the cap when I was about 12. I remember it being a little painful, but not terrible. They looked pretty good, too! Although I think the reason I got it with the cap was because it was a bit cheaper that the foil.

And OP, I don't think you're off base. Thats pretty much exactly how I remember it. It looked very silly.

We have done it many times through the cap at home - it has never hurt, but none of us have sensitive scalps. Plus we are gentle, I'm not sure all stylists would be...

Can't speak to roots, though. Might be worth a try just to see!

I've done cap many, many times.....a lot less money and time away from the house. My daughter helps me pull the hair through the holes and it's done. It doesn't hurt at all.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I haven't colored or highkighted my hair in years. I didn't even know they still used those caps.

Everybody has different comfort levels I guess.

Using a cap wasn't my cup of tea. It felt like a chicken was pecking at my head for a long time. Hurt a little and felt torturous to me. I won't be doing that again!

Yeah, the cap routine seems kinda dated and amateurish to me! Wouldn't you get streaks rather than a nice weave? Or is that the look you are looking for?

Highlights through a cap is very 90's. The last time someone brought out a cap to do my highlights, I was in Egypt. Um, no. He had to use foil.

My hairdresser here is good with highlights and doesn't use anything.

I always noticed 'steps' on my sides back in the 90's from a cap.

I do my own with a cap. Never had roots like I did the time I tried foils. The only time I ever have roots after highlights has been with foils or with no cap or foil just by hand all artist-like.

I have long THICK hair and have never had any pain issues with the cap at all. I think it just depends on the tenderness of your head and the aggressiveness of the person pulling the hair through the cap

No, you are right on base.
It doesn't hurt terribly...once in a while your hair may get pulled a bit, but it's not excruciating pain.

A girl at my work had hers done once with a cap. The dye leaked through the hole, so she ended up with little circles at the base of each highlight all over her head. It looked horrible! If the hairdresser you are planning on going to has done this for a long time, she probably knows what she's doing. I'm not sure who the girl I know went to, but they probably weren't experienced or something. I get mine done with foil, it's all my hairdresser will do now. It always looks good, much better then when I had done it with a cap when younger. Good luck in whatever you decide to do!!

I honestly don't know what you guys are talking about with the cap looking so much different than the foil. Maybe because my hair is super curly it all blends in better? I don't know.

My stylist will use a cap OR foil, but it's so much cheaper to do the cap. She's so rough though and it hurts. Again, because my hair is so curly, brushing it out beforehand doesn't help all that much.

i was really dissapointed the last time i had foil. I paid over $200 for a cut and highlights and walked away with 1/4 inch of roots already .... wierd.

I have had the cap done before and it's not bad.

I've had highlights with the cap and each and every time it felt like there was an angry woodpecker on my head. Had to take ibu when I got home.
Now, my hairdresser uses foils...my hair grows ridiculously fast, so I get touchups every 5-6 weeks. But, I actually like the foil better than the cap. My hairdresser gets just as close to my scalp...it can be a bit sore from the short bristled applicator she uses.
