I am suffering right now with really bad itchy eye lids, and now my eye lids are swollen. I just got back from the doctor and she thinks I have eczema on my eye lids. She did prescribe some kind of cream for my eye lids, but it will be a couple of hours before I will be able to pick it up.

Has anyone else here suffered from this? How long did it take for the itching and swelling to go away? Is there anything else I can do to help myself?? I have been taking benidril (sp) and claritain with no relief, but the benidril sure does help me sleep though the night, lol. Any tips out there!!

My mom gets this all the time (off and on). She also has a special cream for that area and I think it works pretty well. My son has eczema all over and, occasionally, gets it on the eyelids.

FYI...Benadryl won't do a thing for this as it's not an allergic reaction.

Yuck. I've never had it on my eyelids. That sounds uncomfortable.

Whenever my eyes do get itchy or bleary, I get a soft, clean wash cloth and moisten it with cold water. I prefer to use fridge water to get it extra cold. Then I wring it out and go lay down with it over my eyes. It needs to be clean and free of irritants though......no smoke, pet dander, allergens, etc. After a bit, my eyes feel much better.

I use to get that and was told it was an allergy to nail polish. My Dr. told me that you touch your eyes more than you realize and that was what was causing my problems. Sure enough, I stopped wearing nail polish and my eyes cleared up!

Interesting. But my mom and son don't wear nail polish so I guess you can get it for other reasons? I know it is eczema; however, I've always thought they were reacting to something.

Oh I feel for you! I had that for a stretch a few years back and it was awful..my lids began to crack and peel...very attractive!! I had been self medicating with benadryl ointment and cold compresses. The cold compresses were soothing. Finally went to the dermatologist who gave me a cream for it, sorry I don't remember what it was. It helped some, but mostly when the stress let up my eyes cleared up as well.

All the best that this passes quickly for you.

I just remembered something else. While my mom has a chronic pattern of this over the years (she will flare up once or twice a year), a few months ago she used some Pantene shampoo and it immediately set of the eyelid eczema. She said she's never had anything that directly set it off. So you might also want to investigate some of your shampoos. Her dermatologist told her that the biggest offenders for this is shampoo, conditioner, body washes, and then hair products--in that order.

I don't wear nail polish, so that one is out for me.

I have been trying to self medicate here also. My eyes have been itching for 4 weeks now, then the swelling started yesterday, I finally said, enough is enough, I need help!! I have tried all the stuff I mentioned, plus I have put OTC ointment, and I have been putting cold packs on my eyes (boy does THAT feel nice!)

Yes, I am trying to think of anything that could be new, that I am using. Since my eyes have been itching for 4 weeks now, it has to be something I am still using, or she also said it could be a food. I just want it to be gone.

I've had it on my eyebrow. My breakouts are stressed induced IMO. Before every trip we take I break out.

You'll probably never figure it out. The first time it happened to my mom, she was actually living with us waiting for her house to be built. We tried to think if it was something in our house but we could never figure it out. She got the cream and it magically disappeared.

Sometimes, it could actually be a reaction to pollens that are in the air. So, if you live in a high-pollen area this could be what set it off.

Yes - eye lids, under my eyes and even around my lips. The dr. prescribed Westcort which is a form of hydrocortisone and it helps. I've had the cracking, flaking and even some mild bleeding.

The cool compresses as other posters have suggested definatly help with the relief....try to avoid any make up, creams other than what the dr. prescribed, hot water.....and I would even suggest going for allergy testing if it continues to worsen.

Good luck! I feel for you!
