Ever fry a turkey?

My wife bought me a gas smoker that can be used as a turkey fryer if I get the pot. I have never fried a turkey but I have heard that they are amazingly good.

I am a very good --- and I would say very good --- cook, and adventurous as well.

But is a Thanksgiving turkey something you would try for a first attempt at frying a turkey?

Pointers? Thoughts?

Thanks.... Chuck

I've fried a couple of them. Either I'm doing something wrong or fried turkey isn't for me. I didn't like it too much. I bought the injector stuff for it (I've tried the cajun one, the butter one, and a garlic one), fried it the specified time in my turkey fryer in the right amount of peanut oil. I'd rather have it oven roasted instead.

Many times! and always good too!

Sometimes I use a cajun rub....sometimes an injection sauce...sometimes both...

(rubs and injection sauces can be found at most stores)

the bird takes about 3 to 3 &1/2 minutes per pound to cook...after your oil has reached 350 defrees or higher...

safety caution....never have too much oil in the pot for the weight of your turkey....

and slowly... SLOWLY... lower and raise your turkey when putting it in the pot...

I also have a smaller pot...I do wings...or veggies in....

Even though I have never done one, here is a trick.... Put you turkey in the pot, fill with water to the desired level. Pull the turkey out. Now, note where that line is and that is how much oil you need.

I've fried one a few times. As browneyes said, either I'm doing something wrong or it's just not for me. Maybe my roasted turkeys are so fabulous that nothing can compare???:) Seriously, they weren't bad and definitely moist, but I definitely preferred the brined and roasted ones I make.

have you ever used your smoker to smoke a turkey? Smoked Turkey and stuffing is my favorite!!

We haven't done it ourselves, but our friends did and dh and I thought it was the BEST turkey we had ever eaten! It was soooooo flavorful and juicy.

Try injecting your turkey(s) with a can of chicken broth per bird. Mix in the cajun sauces too (we even do the last bird with mucho hot sauce!)

The broth makes 'em that much more moist!
We don't/can't handle roasted anymore, you'll definitely enjoy the frying experience!

We have done it a number of time....yummmy!!!!!

I'd be too afraid of fire or serious injury to fry the turkey. I think smoking it would be wonderful....a different and safer Tanksgiving treat.

My neighbor did, in the garage. Burned down the house. I'm not joking.

We have a turkey fryer and DH has done several. They are good, but I prefer a roasted turkey.

The Scouts love to deep-fry turkeys on campouts, however!

You should use the fryer outside and away from structures.

We fry a turkey every year. That's the only way we will eat turkey. It is very yummy and very juicy!! I have to admit though the very first time we fried a turkey we bought 2 (just in case). That was a very good idea too because we ended up burning the first turkey. After we learned our mistake we did the second turkey and have never went back to the oven again.

Yep, we've done it!

Our first try was on Christmas last year. To be safe, I did 2 turkeys, one fried, one in the oven. Of course, no one touched the oven cooked one. The fried turkey was just so juicy & flavorful. I doubt I'll ever do a turkey in the oven again.

Besides the taste aspect, it's so nice to have your oven freed up to cook all the other stuff! And, it's the only way I've ever been able to get my DH's butt off the sofa on Thanksgiving. Now, instead of watching football, he's outside cooking the turkey :)

In the What is your Thanksgiving Menu like?? thread on the Cooking, Crafting & Scrapping board several people mentioned frying their turkeys. You might find some info over there. If you don't want to read the whole thing, I know there were comments on page 3.
