Ever fly somewhere just for the day?

I've never been on a flight but am planning my first which will more than likely be a single day event. I've met a local flight instructor and we're going to fly over to Wright Patterson Air Force Base and visit the museum for the day. I'm not taking flying lessons or anything but he's looking to build hours and I'm looking for a fun day of flying for the first time so it's all good for both of us. Probably gonna happen next month and I'm really excited about it.

When my daughter was in college, I flew from Atlantic City to Myrtle Beach for the day for her birthday.

Took the first flight out (6am-ish) and the 9pm-ish flight back. Rented a car for $9.99/day and took her to lunch and dinner.

Oh, and we went to Chicago for the day from Philly to see The Oprah Show.

We flew from San Jose to Seattle for the day. We originally were going up to Seattle just for our global entry appointments. We were on a time crunch and there were no appointments available at SFO for months. A few weeks before, we found appointments at SFO so we used the day in Seattle to be tourists - Space Needle, Pike Place Market, etc. It was a great day trip.

Yep, our oldest DD, SonIL, 1-year-old granddaughter and myself (my wife and other 2 grown children couldn’t work out scheduling issues, otherwise they would have come along, as well) flew from Austin to Orlando and back to visit MK from the early afternoon to evening on 10/29/19.
We entered MK about 12:30p (plane had an issue with a luggage door, so our flight was delayed until resolved) and exited about 6:30p.
Oldest DD had found a crazy-inexpensive flight online.
It was a BLAST…!!!!!!! 😃
I did a TR about it on another site…!!! 🙂

BWI to Atlanta and back in 1996 for the Olympics. We took a 6am flight to Atlanta, saw some track & field preliminaries (no medal events) at the Olympic Stadium, a women’s indoor volleyball match, and soaked up the atmosphere. Returned to BWI on a flight about 1030pm.

BWI to Chicago and back for a work conference.

Yes.
To Orlando 5am and back on 9pm for fun - 2 hour flights
To Portland 5am ET and back on the 11:30pm PT - really long day 6 hours of flights both ways. It was to hand deliver a drive of data
To Omaha 6am and back on 6pm

I just booked a day trip from Atlanta to Philadelphia.

We leave Atlanta at 6am and arrive back in Atlanta at 11pm should all the flights happen on time.

The point of the trip is to as cheaply as possible try to take advantage of a status match that will hopefully result in a free 7 day cruise for two. The airfare is $100 round trip for the two of us and I used points to rent the car for the day. I am not sure if it will all work out but even if it does not, we will have had a fun day in Atlantic City for $100.
Absolutely, and LOVE it. 100% sounds like a good trip - enjoy! If you like ice cream, I can tell you of a great place.

So envious. I have to admit I really would like to go to the Olympics or World Cup. I really, really like "big moments/events" like these. I took some so-so pictures a few years back of the torch in ATL - I was enraptured by those Olympic Games.

I went to an early round World Cup match in 1994 in Washington DC, Mexico vs. Norway, I think.

I’m going to try to attend again in 2026. Maybe even the LA Olympics in 2028.

Never went to a World Cup event, but I was a student at the time of the 1994 World Cup. I even saw some of the practice going on where Brazil had practices open to the public at their training site.

The only Olympics event I saw was preliminary soccer at the 1984 Olympics. The (then only men's) soccer was divided up into four sites - the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Harvard, Annapolis, and Stanford Stadium. The one I saw was Brazil vs. West Germany.

Tampa to Atlanta and back the same day to get a new work ID. (I work from home.)

Well not for a calendar day but for less then 24 hours. Flew to Vegas on Saturday afternoon, didn't get a hotel, gambled all night and flew home Sunday morning. Wow, to be young again and do that. Now, no way doesn't sound like a fun weekend to me.

An update since we booked the cruise which was the primary reason for the day trip.

So we took the trip and did the status matches.

So far we have used $200 in Caesars celebration dinner credits, booked two cabins on a 10 day MSC cruise at a savings $5753, and booked 4 nights at the Wynn in Las Vegas that would cost $3496 if we were paying that come with a $100 dining credit.

That is $9549 in value from the day trip.

I should have played the status match game years ago.

Not me, but my cousin flew his daughter and a photographer to Florida to do a senior pictures photo session.
