Ever buy a Rolex in Nassau?

I was wondering if anyone has ever bought a rolex from the John Bull store in Nassau?

If so how is their pricing compared to the U.S.? And is it worth it?

I would also think that I would get it Tax free, I would just use up most of everyone's tax free quota.

If you are even remotely considering this, be sure you know what style you are looking for and what the best price is that you can get in the US. I have priced many things in the Carribean which were supposedly "deals", but I could beat the price at almost any store in the US, often including the addition of taxes. In addition, I would verify whether you can parlay out the price to multiple individual's allowances. My initial thought would be one item, one person, but I may be wrong.

I always found the Nassau stores to be more expensive than back in the states. We did buy a Rolex in St. Maarten and it was cheaper than if we bought it here. We had it appraised and even our Rolex dealer said we got a good deal. Always price what you want to buy at home then you can compare prices when you cruise. Kathy

Wasn't in Nassau, but in Grand Cayman - My DH bought a Rolex there - Got a great price and saved $$$ - Never priced them in Nassau -

But agree with the above poster, know the prices in the States, know the type of Rolex you want -

my dh just priced them for me. A ladies oyster stainless datejust was 2800 in nassau. Retail in the states was 3200. Some jewelers discount 10%, so you end up only saving about $100 on that model. You do save some on sales tax, but there is a limit on how much of the watch is duty free so you end up paying some sales tax. To me it wasn't worth it to give up having a local retailer relationship.

Hmmm..

I see. I do know the models that I want so I'll have to price them again before I go. I'm 30 min. from NYC so there is always a deal to be had on Rolex in the city. I just thought maybe by chance that the savings would be significant. As far as the taxes go, there is something on the DCL wesite and in the birnbaum's book that explain how to spread the value among several people.

if you bought the watch, slapped it on your wrist, threw away the packaging, how would they know that you bought it out of the country? not that I would encourage this, of course!

that's very true.... I believe it works on the honor system in that respect. I don't think the tax will be a factor in this case as the two models I'm after should be sub $3000.00 range.

The port purchases are reported to the ship and customs will find out about the major purchases. The cruise we bought the Rolex on we also bought a lot of jewelry. I was in the shopping mood . The tax was no big deal. In fact our overage duty was in the low $90's. No kidding. What we did was list out on a piece of paper each item, the cost, the port of call and the receipts. We had 5 in our family on that cruise so all of your allowances are added together for each family. The amount we were allowed to buy duty free was a lot. We only went over on one cruise and it was the "Rolex" cruise. The custom agent liked how my husband was organized. I was surprised how easy the whole ordeal was, I expected to pay a huge tax but it was in the low 90's. You know, here at home that would be the sales tax! Kathy

That's what I figured. I'm going to go into the city to see what the submariner and GMT Master II go for so that I know weather it's good or not.
