I have been given the chance to be interviewed for an article People Magazine is doing on mental illness and the lack of support on many college campuses (I am the opposite, I have only positive things to share about my school though) Name, picture if I agree to it, the whole works. :cool1:

I dont know if I should do it... In the long run, it won't matter, nobody remembers what they have read years later, but in the short run, it could potentially have a big effect on my life.

Has anyone ever been interviewed and given personal information like this? Good experience? Bad experience? Things that I should think about besides the obvious? Words of advice or support?

I will never regret not doing it because I see being given the opportunity as cool enough. I have till Monday or Tuesday to decide. I hate making decisions. :goodvibes

I was interviewed for Smart Money a few years ago about investing (Roth IRA's, etc..) The writer saw some of my posts on the Motley Fool message boards. No picture but it was still very cool. I have also been on the front of the newspaper/interviewed in MA two times when I was a store manager there. Our store was moving from one town to another.

What is the downside for you? I don't think I saw it spelled out?

And I think you are qrong about people not remembering what they've read. If a story touches me, I remember it for a very long time.

From People alone, I remember the story about the angel that buys gravesites for abandoned bodies of abused babies. And then the story 3 years later about how she won the lottery (karma, right?).

If you have a good cause, and it can help people. I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now, if you are a celebrity and this is your 14th divorce, then they should probably avoid the People story :-)

Yes, I have been interviewed for local Hawaii newspapers and in fitness resources, but nothing like People magazine.

What better way to be an advocate than to have your thoughts published and read by millions? :) You could really make a difference in someone's life so please consider it. :wizard:

I was interviewed for a nursing magazine article about what nurses do other than nursing (mine centered around my acting career and a particular incident with Bruce Willis). A few nurses saw it. Nobody talked it about much after a few months. I was kind of worried that I might get blackballed in the industry because of some my comments, but I didn't notice any ill effects from it.

I was interviewed for Cooking Light magazine for, believe it or not, an article about sore knees! Basically my experiences, treatment, and outcomes were discussed.

I guess the most surprising thing about it was that, in the interview, I was asked a lot of in-depth questions and gave a lot of details. But when the article hit, it was much more brief and "glossed" over. I didn't feel misrepresented or anything but probably 85%of what we discussed didn't get into the article.

Yes I have. It was for Christian Special Education (something or other) magazine. A local woman was a writer for it and I went to high school with her son and was friends with him. She interviewed me about my injury (the ins and outs of it) and my childhood/adulthood school life being a paraplegic. It was so cool! :)

I was never in special education but the point of the article was to give readers an insight on school with a physical disability.

I'm impressed to have so many celebrities here :goodvibes

I never was but DH was featured on the cover of Simithsonian Magazine
for playing old time baseball.
Needless he bought many copies. :teeth:

I haven't, but my DH has many times. He's been interviewed and quoted in hobby, mostly model railroading, magazines for years.

I have for a few newspapers and a college magazine/website and a local PBS station all on the same topic. The topic was how I used the online courses of a local college. The online program was new at the time and I was a successfull adult student for the program.

The PBS station launch/symposium was the most nerve wracking as I was one of three students that were there... station managers, dignitaries and even a Pennsylvania senator was there. (Arlen Specter).

After all the media blitz was finished, I am glad I did it. I never told my employers at the time (I didn't want to be seen as gloating), but one of my principals found the article and truly encouraged me to continue in my studies. Some of my coworkers didn't like that, but I didn't bring it on to myself. I know I was the example to the other employees to go to school, get the degree, etc.

I never felt I was misquoted or misrepresented.

I never have, but DH was a few years ago.

He was interviewed here in our home for the Michigan Farmer magazine, his picture was included. It was an article about him taking over the Future Farmers of America club in our school, when the school didn't have a teacher to do it.

Yep... Twice. Once was in a pro wrestling magazine when I about 16. The other was when I was about 35. It was for a magazine like Mad Magazine. I don't even remember the name of it.

Yes, once for the Wall Street Journal (okay that's a newspaper)

Once for Business Week Magazine

Once for the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper

I was interviewed for a local newspaper. I was trying to get a football team added to our high school sports roster. I worked on it for about a year, attended many school board meetings and eventually present it to the "town" at the town meeting. They voted against it unfortunately even though it was all to be privately funded.
Oh well, we ended up moving out of that town the next year anyways.
I still have all the clippings. It was pretty cool.

I say go for it. It it even affects one peson than it will be worth it.

I have been quoted in Redbook magazine twice, though I never have had my picture in a magazine. I thought it was pretty cool. I don't know that anyone else I know ever noticed it though, as no one has ever said anything to me about it.

Hi everyone, thanks for your input.

I decided not to do it. There could be too many future reprecussions. There is too much stigma against mental illness and too much judgement.

What if a future employer googled me and that's what came up? It might bias them against not hiring me.

I agree that I can speak out against the stigma but I dont think an article that I can't control is the way to do it.

I was the subject of an article in the AMA journal. Does that count? I broke my ankle in high school and the local U used a brand new casting technique on me which was chronicalized in the AMA journal. The cast was an utter failure, btw.
