Well.........this stupid medicaid crap is for the birds, and HIPPA can go somewhere else..

Today I found out the state has 3 days to respond to the hospitals request for a waiver to a rehab facility...then it has 14 days to process that request.

I basically said- she wont be here for 2 more weeks...just not gonna happen...

She walked down the hallway and 1/2 way back to her room today- and they took her bedside commode away- so she has to get up and walk to the bathroom (with assistance- 2 nurses)..

She seems to be doing better...but I'm not sure whats going on and here's why

I just called- she said the social worker came in tonight and said that she thinks the waiver will be denied- this means they consider my mom to be a "low risk" and will not allow the rehab...for a double pelvic fracture, with cerebellar ataxia on top of it, and 2 staples in her head.

I called the nurses station to find out what was going on, well hippa blippa crappa- they werent going to tell me anything. I finally got the charge nurse on the phone and said listen- i've been there since day 1, I'm almost 3 hours away, my mother heard something she thinks today and I'm trying to find out whats going on, you can go down to her room and ask her if you can tell me, she will okay it..b.lah blah blah- she went down and mom said- to please tell me what was going on....she came back- I said- listen, unless your going to discharge her and leave her on the street corner in a wheelchair- I need to know...I will be the one coming to get her...

Of course- then there was nothing in the chart, except that they were still waiting for the waiver...........WTH!.....

I need a drink..........

Hopefully tomorrow when I get the social worker on the phone, I'll find out what is going on

This brings back awful memories of all the nonsense I went through with my DH's medical "care"..

I sure hope things go smoother for you.. Ya just gotta dig your heels in and act like a rabid pit bull.. LOL

You know- I have to wonder.

She's sitting in a level 1 trauma center- at almost $8K a day....if they send her to the rehab center- its about $6K a day...she's only seeing the PT 1x a day at this hospital, and it's for about 1/2 hour....HOWEVER if she was at the rehab center i want her at, she'd be getting close to 4 hours pt per day (broken up into 45 minute chunks)

Medically- there is NO reason for her to be in the trauma center..NONE ZIP ZILCH...heck they'd have let her go 8 hours after we arrived via 3 hour ambulance ride....to a rehab place.

Some things the government does really boggles my mind...

I dont EVER remember dealing with crap like this when my dad had lung cancer, it could have been that he had BCBS of VT, which at least at that time was one of the best carriers in the state, but I NEVER had to deal with all this crap....and her being almost 3 hours away- well that just sucks on top of it.

If they release her tomorrow, she's outta luck, even Thursday- I cant get there till Friday.....and since we just got the bill for last Friday's early AM ambulance ride, to the tune of $1600 and change, I doubt she'll be smiling if I call them to go get her...

Do you remember when they called and insisted that I take my DH home in the middle of a major snowstorm - with his feet the size of footballs and no slippers or anything that would fit on them? I just flat out refused to pick him up and threatened a lawsuit and tv coverage.. They finally backed off and I picked him up the next day.. Maybe you should do the same..

As for the government? Well - they just looooove to waste money - and then cry about how "poor" they are.. Grrrrrr...

Give 'em heck!!

OH YES!!!! I remember that post well! I was furious for you!

I talked to my brother after posting- and his wife is due any minute with baby ##2, there is NO way he can leave her home, with my nephew who is 2, for 6-8 hours while he goes to get my mom...when he'll be almost 3 hours away.....looks like if they discharge her- she'll sit there discharged but still there until Friday when I can get up there.

Another kicker- if she has to go home, the only way for her to be able to go back to my brothers, is if they do the garage remodel they were planning for next spring- like an inlaw apt, with its own bathroom etc... I have a contractor friend who is coming home this weekend and will give us an idea of the $$...but shesh when its raining its pouring!

Another thing to do is to have your Mom sign a form so that it's in her chart that she gives her permission for you to talk to any of her doctors. That'll cut down a little of the hastle.

I hope you get somewhere with the social worker tomorrow.

::yes:: My 80+ y/o mother was admitted to a hospital this summer and I live 500 miles away. She gave the hospital a codeword, and when I called for info I had to give codeword on the phone in order for them to answer my questions, give info, etc. It worked well, and I didn't have to sign anything.... Suspect something like this exists at most hospitals. I did have to sign a form to talk with her insurance company about claims, etc.
Good luck and hope things work out!

Be sure to let us know how it goes today..

Good luck! :flower:
