Even Though 2009 Prices Increased Disney Has No Choice But...

Well, they may or may not have a code next year. Who knows? If your trip is too expensive, you can always downgrade some of your WDW options. We are going this December and are taking our 4 kids and MIL. That's 7 people and we have two preferred rooms at All-Star movies and the basic dining plan and 8 day hoppers and our trip is about $4,200.00. So, unless your family is much larger than ours and you are staying much longer, you can stay-on site, with the dining plan, a lot less than $12,000.00.

Well we are 7 people staying at POP standard (Dec 13-26). All considered adults on the DDP (basic). The price includes MVMCP tickets, airline tickets, and the 600 dollars needed for dining gratuity. I know airlines tickets are not part of Disney but it is part of a Disney vacation.

I was at WDW in January 2002. Not only was POFQ closed, but POR only had the Alligator Bayou section open. The only bus stop was the front one. And I got a major discount on the room. But that time it was not based on the economy, but lack of people traveling at any price.

The OP should not count on any discounts based on the dates coming from Disney. Disney is not having any trouble filling the rooms this year. No one can predict what will happen in more than a year from now. (AAA may have a discount.)

Since you are staying 2 weeks, for most at Disney, that would be 2 vacations. 2 families/rooms at Pop for about 3,000 for an average price per week. Yes it would be 12,000. There are cheaper solutions like renting a house off site, even for half the trip. Annual pass will bring down the price of tickets. There may be other ways to make your trip cost less. Explore your possibilities.

CBR also closed for a few months in fall 2002. It was supposed to be because of food court renovations but I think under normal circumstances they would have worked around it. I was supposed to stay there, they gave good deals to move elsewhere.

qanita92 ~ Off subject, but where did you find the picture of the princesses you have on your posts?

This question about codes and discounts is best suited to the codes and rates board.

Moving this one there.

Thanks,

Knox

What resort was closed for 4 months?

I don't beleive Disney has ever closed down a whole resort unless it was for major renovations.

I also have to agree that Disney is cheaper than most other places especially with the DDP.

After 911 they stopped construction of the second section of Pop --- still not completed.

They closed French Quarter for "renovations". They have renovated all their resorts at other times without shutting down completely. They simply did not have enough guests for fill the resorts.

Discounts were very deep - I stayed at the Wildie woods view for $129 p/night --- grabbed that coupon they sent and called right away before they changed their mind. It was a luxury for 10 nights!!!!!

Wings of resorts were shut down because they cold not be filled - Animal Kingdom Lodge comes to mind first.

......and for those who think a Disney vacation is AFFORDABLE......hahahahaha.

I'm not sure how you vacation....but with my DH's castmember rates, free tickets and shopping and food discounts it's still more expensive than some of our vacations. We spent two weeks in Alaska last summer, for example, .... got married - stayed in georgous lodges....a big suite on the Radiance of the Seas and our p/day cost was still less than WDW on castmember rates. (based on buying park passes when we use up our free tickets).

We are not econolodge people --- leaving in 22 days for the Grand Californian at DL - park view room ---- and we still find some of the prices at DL and WDW obscene.

Disney will survive - but it will be challenging for them.

And yet ... you're still going to Disney next Christmas. So ... apparently they're affordable on some scale, or why bother? You can find deals to pretty much anywhere that are less than Disney. And I'll bet a lot of people here can find you deals that will be more affordable than your trips. It just depends on how and where you want to stay. I've seen people do Disney on pennies. Any travel location is only as expensive as you let it be, KWIM?

:earsboy:

I believe her comments were based on the cost of a Disney trip vs. other vacations.

Perhaps they WANT to go to Disney --- even though there are many more affordable places to visit. Hey, Hawaii isn't all that shabby!!!

I think the the affordability of a Disney vacation is all about perspective - and choices.

Everyone vacations in a different way and has their own detrmination of value versus cost.

Before we took our first trip this past April, I always thought that Disney was going to be a money pit in general. Afterward, I don't stop telling people about how reasonable I thought it was in general.

Out total budget (which we hit) was $3,700. That was for a family of 5 (one 2 year old, which helps), 8 nights at ASMo, MYW with DDP plus souvenirs, driving costs (gas and lodging). A 10 night family vacation "away" for that is tough to beat unless you are just going to rent a cottage for a week.

Of course, we didn't get park hoppers, we stayed at a value, didn't go to a P&P Party etc...those are the choices that we made. That's how you make it reasonable for your own situation.

The costs of snacks in the park is cheaper then most baseball parks and souvenirs are right where I expect them to be- $15 for a hat and $50 for a hoodie are not outrageous prices.

I'll tell you what, unless I figured it wrong, 4 adults at pop, 10 day hopper and water park and more, plus dining shows at 5508.52.. (not for all 7 just 4 of you I understand that). And that's the 13th thru the 26th? So 13nights if i figured that right..

Sooo...

5508/13 = 424 / day.. But with 4 people.. so that's only 105.92 pp / per night with dining???? Did I screw something up there???

We have been able to go during off-season for many years and went 2 or 3 times a year. This year the kids are in school (after 20-plus years of home schooling) and I think our Disney days are winding down. The cost is not as much of a factor as the crowds. Just returned from 2 days at AS Sports and 11 days at the Wilderness cabins. As wonderful as the World is, none of us could stand the increased summer crowds.

Along with the resort closures after 9/11 Disney often closes sections of resorts or limits room availability and we aren't even aware. This is done if they want to save $ by not hiring more CM's to staff certain locations and provide services or don't have enough labor. I agree with the poster who said it's all about supply and demand, and Disney can reduce the supply quite easily without closing an entire resort. When numbers can't be filled, shutting down rooms saves $ on utlities and labor vs. discounting the rooms to a level that reduces the percieved quality of the product. Disney has always offered some type of discounts- some more deep than others. I remember many promos from the past when the economy was booming.---Kathy
