My mom will be with us on our next trip and she has really bad knees so I'm trying to convince her to get an ECV. Which company and which scooter? 3 or 4 wheel? Captain chair or not? There are way too many choices - lol! She's under 200 lbs. if that makes a difference - we will be there 7 days. Thank you for any help you can provide!!

Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread.
Post 2 of that thread is about renting wheelchairs and ECVs. You can also find that thread stuck near the top of this board.

It includes information, phone numbers and links to the off-site rental companies most often recommended by DIS posters. You would be happy with any of those companies.

3 wheeled scooters turn more sharply, so they take less space to turn.
Some people prefer the 4 wheeled scooters because they are more stable (4 wheels on the ground feels more secure than 3 wheels).

Most scooters have fairly similar seats - padded black vinyl with a seat and a back that may not come all the way down to meet the seat. There are armrests.
Captain's chairs are more common on the heavy duty scooters made for a heavier weight.

We just got back yesterday. I called Apple Scooter about three days before arrival and ordered a wheelchair for my husband. Wheelchair was delivered to the hotel and ready for us upon check in. We used it first day in the parks and it was so hot and humid I almost passed out pushing him. Called Apple and asked to upgrade to a scooter and it was no problem. They dropped off the scooter and the next day I traded in the wheelchair for the scooter. Definitely do a scooter, so much easier. Apple was wonderful and I would highly recommend them.

I use Apple Scooter. I rent the 3 wheel captains chair. Three wheel is easier to manipulate and the battery of the captains chair lasts longer.

This may be a silly question, but when you rent a scooter do you have to then take Disney busses or are there ones that can fit in a car? Our trip last week my mother rented a scooter at the parks bc she prefers to drive with us instead of taking the bus but it got so expensive.

There are scooters that can be taken apart in pieces and fit in a trunk. There are not as large as the all-in-one-piece models, but I think they are just as comfortable. Talk to the rental company and tell them you want one that can be taken apart, and they will see you get what you need.

They are typically very easy to assemble and disassemble into 4 or 5 pieces. The heaviest will be either the battery or the rear wheels (with the motor) which will be about 30-35 pounds.

If your mother is OK walking around the resort, you can leave the scooter in your trunk and just take the battery in for charging every night. This will save taking it out and putting it back in one extra time per day, but someone will need to be able to carry a 30-35 pound battery to the room. (Or bring a foldable luggage cart or such with you to tote it.)

The scooter that you want for traveling in a car is a travel scooter.
