EVC for a day?

Hi,

We are going to WDW in Feb. for just 3 days. My sister has had problems with her knee here in recent months. I think she will be OK to walk maybe one or two days of the parks, the third day I am concerned about. Can someone tell me how to rent a EVC for just one day and about how much it costs?

It is possible to rent ECVs on a daily basis from the theme parks. Do be warned that they can run out, especially at busy times, so if you're planning to rent from the parks, try to turn up reasonably early in the day. Can't remember how much it costs, but that may well be in the disABILITIES FAQ thread (a sticky near the top of this board).

However, I think that walking the parks for a few days with knee problems might be more hassle than it's work. Most people walk around 6 miles a day at the parks (often more) which is a lot of walking, even for someone without mobility concerns. It might be better for everyone if she were to rent an ECV for the length of her stay from an off-site vendor. That way, she won't need to be constantly worrying where the next bench is, or how much pain she's in, or that she's slowing you down (trust me, been there, done that, got the T-shirt, not planning to do it again!). See what she thinks about it, and if it sounds like a good idea to her, the FAQ has a list of rental companies in the area.

The last thing we need is to be slowed down. I hadn't thought about the situation in that manner. I will talk to her and see what she thinks.

No problems at all, that's what we're here for! If your sister does go for the off-site rental idea, you might want to check out the FAQ thread, as it has information on dealing with buses, rides etc. with a wheelchair / ECV.

The current price for ECVs in the Parks is $35 per day plus a $5 refundable key deposit, so it is $40 at the pick-up.

No, you cannot reserve any Disney Park ECVs. However, I would suggest that you consider renting from off-site, so she will have the ECV for the length of stay. Also, the off-site rentals tend to be much better than Dosney's as well as less expensive.

Thank you but she if very self conscious about riding in an EVC. I had to talk a blue streak to convince her it would be better for her to at least use one in the parks! She is has very bad knees, joints, and side effects from previous surgeries. She is also very overweight. She was a very physical person in her youth and young adulthood and has difficulty with the new reality of her body. I am afraid that if she doesn't have use of an EVC at the parks she will not physically be able to enjoy her trip. I think she can manage outside of the parks.

As you're going at a reasonably busy time, I'd recommend you get to the parks as early as possible, if you're planning to rent on a daily basis. As CF said, they're first come first serve, and they can run out at busier times. If you decide to stick with renting from the parks each day, I would make sure you pack the numbers of the external rental companies, just in case your sister changes her mind. And don't worry, Disney is the most wheelchair / ECV friendly place I've ever been to, so wheeling it is nice and easy!

You may have heard about Buena Vista Scooters, which is the only 'out of park' company that you can actually walk up to and rent from on Disney property. They are based at Boardwalk and you can rent them by the day, so if you were at BW or one of the Epcot area resorts, you could walk there and rent one the night before or in the morning before going to Epcot. renting the ecvs are definitely worth it. i was there in September with my husband and mother-in-law. My husband has the same issues as your sister. Quite athletic in his younger days but now he pays the price for it. Several knee surgers and quite overweight. I 2 ecvs - one for each. It was fabulous. My husband was embarrassed at first but everyone is quite friendly and accommodating. It made the entire trip that much enjoyable. He wasn't in any pain and was able to "last" the entire day. We go again in May and September this year and definitely renting the ecv's again.

Do not try to walk with a sore knee...I did it one day last year and was sorry. After that it was ECV each day. I just budgeted it in and they were great. If you park hop keep your receipt and you can get one at second park for $5 deposit. It is still a long walk from the bus to the park entrasnces so keep that in mind
