Europe Cruise

I have not seen anything about an attack on any cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

Self-relegated to Iraq and Syria, just months ago ISIS seemed a distant threat to Italians and other Europeans. Having set up Libyan strongholds along the Mediterranean coast, however, ISIS is now on Europe’s doorstep. The latest threat is to Mediterranean cruise ships– those, for instance, that go from Sicily up the Italian coast to the south of France, or bop from one Greek island to another.

Okay your original post suggested there had already been an attack on a cruise ship.

As others have said, there is always the threat of something happening. I still think I'm more likely to get killed on the highway on my way to the airport than to get caught up in a terrorist attack in Europe. But I know for many just the possibility of something happening is enough to make them change their plans, there is no right or wrong answer.

They have armed guards at every USA Airport.

Not standing with militia style guns. I'm afraid everyone is thinking I'm against the whole idea of going to Europe. We were really excited to take our son. If there were areas here that were high risk we wouldn't go there as well. This just started as me asking was anyone else questioning going and clearly everyone thinks it's completely safe. As I said before, Thank you all for your input!

This is the story I read, just going by what we read.

The following day, fanatics targeted cruise-ship passengers, killing or injuring 38 people from Costa and MSC cruise ships visiting Tunisia. The victims were in tour buses attending a museum as part of excursions marketed on the Costa Fascinosa and MSC Splendida. News accounts indicate that the terrorists waited for the buses to arrive from the ships and then “hunted the tourists down.”

I do remember that story from last year...we actually went to that museum when we did the DCL Med cruise in 2010 when they did have a port stop in Tunisia. They dropped that port the following year, I'm thinking because of the risk of violence.

I think you'll find that as well, that cruise ships will change itineraries due to issues like this. Our Mexican riviera cruise on DCL was supposed to stop in Mazatlan but they took out that stop because of an escalation in drug violence.

The OP said there had been attacks on Mediterranean cruise excursions - not cruise ships: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=6257

It's just a lot to think about when you're traveling with a child. No parent wants to put their family in a bad situation if there are red flags LOL. Thanks for your input. It's appreciated very much!

Just remember that you have 16 000 000 more chances to die in a plane accident than in a bombing.

You are right, and you definitely have to do what you think is the right thing for you and your family.

Yes, I'm not worried about being on the ship. It was about excursions because who would go there and stay on the boat? We have family who have been to several of the ports so we definitely want to check things out!

The attacks on cruise ship tourists in Tunisia is about as relevant to a cruise around the British Isles as the attacks on tourists in some Mexican riviera ports are to a cruise in Alaska. Tunisia is a country with many problems, the UK and Ireland are long standing democracy with a very well functioning police force. So, don't let these reports scare you away! :goodvibes

Hi, we were considering doing the British Isle Cruise. In light of recent events in Brussels we are thinking it's not a great idea. We've read about attacks on Mediterranean excursions. (NOT on any Disney cruise) Just wondering if anyone else was still planning on traveling over seas or not.

We also live in Europe and feel perfectly safe here, in fact, DH was in Belgium the weekend before the attacks at the airport. We will continue to travel and have several short trips planned before our 12 night Med cruise. The only thing I worry about in Europe is pick-pockets, and I take public transportion 3 or 4 days a week. DH and DS take it almost everyday.

With that being said if it scares you, or you won't be able to enjoy your trip plan something else. There is so much to see in the world. ( I know since my bucket list grows every day.)

We plan on going to Europe this summer. We are booked on the Norwegian, Icelandic cruise in July. Of course always be aware when traveling, but don't let threats of terrorism stop you from living your life. Life is too short. :) :) :)

We were originally booked on the Magic 12-night Med cruise, but when they changed the itinerary and took Turkey and Greece out, we cancelled. I was hesitant anyway and given the recent attacks in Turkey, I don't think we would have gone anyway. We then re-booked on a Celebrity Baltics cruise, but my son is now going to summer school, so that didn't work out either. So, the week before school starts we are off to Nevis! Europe will have to wait until next year, we simply don't have the time, but I wouldn't hesitate to do the British Isles cruise. We were in Orkney, Dover and London last year and we felt perfectly safe. We even got to see Operation Stack - that was something else.

I'm doing a Med (or China) cruise on either DCL or RCCL... Right now I'm leaning towards the British Isles for summer '17 on Royal Caribbean, waiting for Disney to release dates. Don't let these attacks deter your vacation! Unfortunately, they could happen anywhere.

I certainly wouldn't recommend a British Isles cruise...the sea is grey and it's rainy and cold more often than not! But i'm shocked that anyone would consider it unsafe compared to the USA.

We were interested not for the sea but ports. Most people don't get the chance to see a lot of the world. We've been very fortunate to see and do. We love cruising so much, we just started October 13 and just finished our 7th.I'm just trying to take my family on a memorable vacation without being worried the whole time.Yes, there are unsafe places everywhere but when you're not familiar with a country you're a little hesitant. I think opinions vary especially depending where you're from. We're from small town USA so maybe that will shed some light on my concern LOL.

They have armed guards at every USA Airport.

True.. But not in the same style as many other countries. The first time I went to Turkey (alone for 28 days age 26) it was a little odd that there were Sooo many militia style armed policemen everywhere.. Bus loads of them. I got used to it though, and the extremely aggressive annoying men..and carried on with my vacay :)

My dad was in Spain when the attacks on Brussels occurred. There was no impact to him and no local concerns about attacks. He wasn't in the least concerned. You could be anywhere in the world and be subject to a terrorist attack. I'd be more worried about going into the less salubrious areas of any city in any country, not just in Europe.
