Etsy Copyright Question

I have a question about Disney products on Etsy (or any site for that matter). I have some ideas on things I could make and sell on Etsy, but they are Disney themed items. I wasn't sure if I'd be allowed to sell them, but I see tons of Disney stuff on there. I thought the Mickey head/ears silhouette was copyrighted? Does Disney just not care? Is there somewhere you need to ask for permission to sell products with their copyrighted images?

What about using the Disney font? I know it is available for download, so can I use it? What about photographs of the parks/resorts? (I would ONLY use photographs that I take myself. I would never steal them from someone else). But can I use these images of their icons for my own profit?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

You may try asking this question on the Creative DISigns board. All the designers there create Disney themed (and other) designs for free. I know Disney cracked down on one of the designers years ago who was making a profit by allowing donations to be made through her website.

Anyway, the reason I responded is because I know Disney may press charges. Also I think those designers may be more aware of exactly what is legal.

When I used to sell handmade items on ebay I used to hear about people getting letters asking them to cease and desist from Disney. There are so many people selling these types of items on etsy I'm doubtful it's much of a problem over there. I would watch out for anything Dr Seuss. They are all over their copyright. I remember I made something Grinch themed and it was removed.

I've heard that every once in a while, Disney really cracks down and goes through etsy telling sellers to remove Disney themed items because they're copy righted. They typically work together with etsy in those situations, from what others have said. I know the etsy forums have had several discussions on this in the past, so might check them out.

Thank you for the replies. I will definitely head the Creative DISign board and the Etsy discussion pages for more information. I appreciate all the feedback you gave.
