Ethernet at BWV?

Is there a wired or wireless ethernet connection available at BWV?

BTW, I'm on I-10 in Alabama travelling to WDW while surfing the net ever so slowly on a connection from our cell phone. This is a first for us and it's very cool.

No, no wireless or ehernet connections at any WDW DVC resort.

I got something just as slow, but a wee bit cooler. A PCMCIA card that has a little antenna and the word "Nextel", its pretty slick, it ha itsow cell number so it oesn' stop me from being ale to us my cel while surfing, it allows me to surf the internet, talk on my cell phone and watch downloaded Star Trek episodes while I am driving.

Things just keep getting better and better.

Sorry. No wireless or broadband at WDW resorts yet, but it's only a matter of time. WDW is packed with technology, but not for use by guests,yet.

I believe its a conscious decision. They would rathr have you out spending money than in your room surfing.

I can think of dozens of things they could do with a wireless network at WDW. Unlike the "real" world, this one is fully under mouse control. They could tie together reservation systems, fastpasses, resort accounts, even rides, extending the WDW experience on-line. Can you imagine how many of us techno-geeks they could pull out into the sunshine of WDW? With my pocket pc and wi-fi card, I'm all set! ... Heck. Hire me and I'll help you get the project started!

In case any CM's are listening....I'm sure I'd leave a lot more money behind too.

I agree that would rock to be able to get off Mission Spance and jump on the boards and post about it right away with a pocket PC and a wireless connection at WDW and it really isn't that hard I put together wireless internet connections for a living in Canada all they need are a few antennas up around the parks and some Access points and you are ready to rock. Just tie it in to a T1 line someplace on site and voila you can even fire the signal from park to park and to the resorts. Damn fine idea how do we approach them about getting it under way I will gladly volunteer my time to get it under way.

I could see a system where they could post wait times for various attraction that could be accessed with a PDA. They could effectively move people to the lesser used attractions and shorten the lines at the ones with longer waits.

Maybe one day.

I would love to see ethernet internet access in the rooms but how they woudl do it would be another matter all together. They would want to charge for it (it is Disney after all) and they would have to come up with some way to offer it to the members without creating security issues for themselves while being able to recoup the investment in the infrastructure. I woudl love to just see it offered and pay for it out of dues, the cost would be nominal spread out over all of the points out there. I know that some people would flip out if they knew they were paying for something they wouldn't use. Then there would be the technical issues of it. What if someone hooked into the network with a virus on their laptop (not on purpose, by mistake) and infected the other members computers. Let's say one of the other members was a CEO of a large corporation like Widgets Inc. He makes about 50 Million a year and has all of his files on his laptop because he plans on working part of his vacation. Then he gets a virus that eats all of the information and he gets really upset because he has to rebuild his laptop and the files and he decides to sue the DVC since they provided this service.

See how complicated it can get? I'm sure they need to make sure that they limit liability before they offer anything to us.

Ok Kick it up one problem with that first off the CEO would likeley never WORK on vacation and 2 he would never keep all his important stuff stored locally on his notebook it would likeley if he has a good IT dept have it all on CD or DVD just for that purpose. You never keep pertanent or sensative info for work stored locally on your machine. He would also use the network at Disney to connect back via telnet or such to his office thus accessing the office server and again not having his work stored locally. If that was also the case I am sure his office IT staff would have all the virus protection etc up to snuff for a company of that sort. But really how many of us go on holidays to do work NOT ME I would love to hop on the net to check hockey scores etc and check these boards and post updates and so on.

I work for an IT department and we are very good at keeping the PC's and Laptops in good shape. CEO's are human and don't take this the wrong way but sometimes work is their passion and they are not the brightest when it comes to working a computer. They call the IT dept for every little thing and if you think they are smart enough to keep copies of things, even if they are important, well you should work with me for a couple of days. Most important people keep sensitive document only on their laptops and don't store it on a network because it is sensitive. And I would be willing to bet they do not have backup copies anywhere. I repaired the president of my company's laptop and she was in a panic because she didn't have copies of her files anywhere. Luckily I fixed it and she had all of her files, but she could have easily lost everything. You would be amazed at the brilliant and talented people who rely too much on other people (like me) for things they do not understand (like computers) Lastly, just because you have virus software doesn't mean you can't get a virus and spread it.

I was not trying to rain on everyone's parade (every afternoon at 3:00) I was just pointing out that there is a lot more to planning and carrying out the task that everyone, including me, would love to see happen. There is a lot of thought and planning that goes into technical innovations and the implementations of those innovations.

I agree some of the most powerfull people in the world of business are still dumb when it comes to computers and technical stuff that is why they hire people like you and I. As an IT professional you should make sure the files are backed up I mean it is like holding your childs hand at times getting them to do it but it is for the best. It would be tough to get it up and running at Disney but I would be more than happy to go in and help set it up. I also agree not always will you stop every virus around but most are easily preventable just use Netscape rather than IE I have had no problems with viruses and I do not use Microsoft products if I can help it. Linux and a few other systems are much better yes Linux needs to get some security issues addressed but not nearly as many as almost all MS products anyhow I just think it would be great to have that available when we are at Disney. I also wasn't taking a shot at you personally sorry if it seemed that way.

Kick it Up, I'm not technically savy at all. But, how do the other hotels and resorts do it then? I mean we stayed at Hard Rock Hotel and dh was connected there (yes, they charge for it). We even just did a road trip and the Holiday Inn and a very old Radisson in St Louis were both connected (they both charged for it too). Also, we had a virus this week on our computers and our local internet provider detected it right away and immediately kicked us off and wouldn't let us back on. Wouldn't they be able to get these virus detectors too?

(Yes, dh loves his laptop and no he wasn't working! LOL!)

They absolutely can and I'm sure that Disney will provide it in the future, I was just saying that they are very security conscious as well as careful as how they plan things.

I didn't take it personally, I just think that you can only control things so much. I most definately agree that using other products lessen the chance of problems, but those are not my decisions and the vast majority of people do use MS products because of their simplicity (sometimes) and they do work pretty well (most of the time) and they can share information with other MS users.

I hope they do offer a broadband service, I would pay for it and I know others would too. I just want them to be smart about it as I know they will. (Disney that is)

Thanks everyone for your responses. I had to resort to hooking up with a modem.

Of course, this was really a question my husband had - but now at least he has another toy to play with on this trip - his Garmin GPS. He's been walking around the park tracking our path and our distance. We walked about 5.5 miles today. It even tracked us on the part of Test Track that goes outside. He takes care of all the techno-geek stuff and I plan just about everything else for our trips.

Disney was testing this in August at MK. They gave you a Pocket PC that had standard info on the park plus wait times on the "big 10" rides and tips on restaurants and shopping. It was like an adult Pal Mickey. It was very limited in implementation, but was still very helpful. You filled out a questionaire on the Pocket PC at the end when you turned in the unit. They didn't say when they would roll out the product and whether it would be a general wi-fi solution or a canned product like Pal Mickey. I'd say that the future is very close on wi-fi.

I would love to have ethernet access at WDW ... most hotels and even some CAMPER places have it now. Really want internet access from my cabin on the DCL ships, just like RCCL.

We find using dial-up on vacation very ancient.
