ESPN woes continue

That's a good question. I truthfully don't know what fox sports 1 is turning as far as profit, but I feel like they can't be doing much better than espn. I think where they benefit is they aren't as big as espn, so they aren't taking the losses like they are.

The biggest tidbit that you said that's 100% truth is that the 24/7 news cycle doesn't work well for sports. Especially this time of year. All it is is MLB until NFL training camp starts at the end of the month, and you really can only talk about that so much. That's where their talking heads nonsense comes in, and it's a proven failure. Outside of their Wimbledon coverage, there's not much to supplement their air time

The 24 hour news cycle doesn't work well for news, either.

There is all kinds of racing going on in the summer. Plus Tennis, Golf, Soccer, MLB, etc. They used to be willing to show less popular sports, including billiards, strongman, etc and SportsCenter was focused on highlights, not talk.

I think someone mentioned earlier that poker is one of the most highlighted "sports" on ESPN now along with football and basketball. Again, I'm not a marketer, but I don't know how that became the itch that needed to be scratched on a sports station.
"Oh MAN, did you see that guy totally get dealt a pair of 5s? THIS IS AMAZING"

I think the problem for espn for the main sports is that they are all available direct from the league pretty cheap via streaming now...so I wouldn't ever need to watch games on espn.

It used to be the networks had us to see the games...that isn't the way anymore.

I guess I'm just throwing out there that after their contracts expire, they stop showing LIVE sports, and just show clips all day ... old school SportsCenter style. I never went to ESPN to watch live sports. I always went to them as the place to get all the information so I didn't have to pay to watch sports or stream it from anywhere. Once in a while a game is interesting enough to actually watch, but mostly I just want the sum up until the playoffs.

There would probably have to be more than that. Some discussion shows. Keep the 30 for 30 stuff. But not DEBATE shows. Unless that's really what is paying the bills (hard to believe).

I'm apparently of the same carbon date...and as screwy as it is: that's exaclty what happened.

The WW2 generation resisted paying monthly fees for entertainment...you'll
Have to pry it from the baby boomers cold dead hands...the Xers straddle the line but ultimately will abandon it...and the Millenials can't dump cable fast enough.

Really? Baby boomer here. We cut the cable a few years ago and don't have an antenna or watch broadcast at all. And don't miss it. Ever.

I'd think you'd agree you're the exception...not the rule...

I'm often the exception to any rule, but I have no actual statistics about this.

What polls/studies? Not trying to sound rude but I've never heard of anything of the sort that's been done
The results of polling and opinions are numerous and are not hard to find. It is difficult for me to understand that some people just refuse to recognize the fact the liberal commentary is hurting ESPN

What is hurting ESPN is the proliferation of access to the internet containing a multitude of platforms to obtain sports highlights, condensed games, and commentary. No need to sit through an hour SC when you can get what you need in 5-10 min on the internet. Instead of 5 minute commercial spots you only deal with pop up ads and banners.
