Two off topic items -

The good one = Art Prize in Grand Rapids, Michigan was amazing. We went two days and saw 4 major sites and 3 smaller ones plus alot of outside stuff. It was so neat. Downtown was buzzing on a Tuesday which was great to see. And you could actually do it for free since there were places to get a free map and all the sites are free. I just splurged with the book, deluxe map and wrist bands which lets you ride the city bus for free for two weeks plus an Art Prize shuttle which runs between the six main venues. I am going to try to get to the two main venues we did not have time for, another day since my wrist band is good until Oct. 10 and I love riding the bus, makes me feel so green and virtuous.

The bad one = am waiting on the cable tv guy at my parents which apparently has been out for at least two days and spent over an hour on the phone getting a billing error corrected. The first person kept telling me the bill was correct and when I insisted I had papers that said otherwise, told to go stand in line at the one and only office in the area which is a 25 minute drive and at least an hour in line (been there and done that). I was equally insistent that I wanted a supervisor and was told no just leave your number and someone will call you back. Since I had tried that 3 times in June and July when the folks were having cable trouble with never any returned call, I got upset and said was not hanging up until I tlaked to a supervisor. Two more time the woman put me on hold only to return and say no one could talk to me. So finally, I said fine, please call Attorney __________ at __________ and she will take it from here. Low and behold, a supervisor immediately became available. It was not an idle threat since I have a law license (retired) and was giving them my name and number. Eventually, figured out that when the cable company upgraded to digital the service tech installed an extra box that was not ordered because that is how many tvs he saw in the condo. They agreed to come and take it out and refund the charges then offered to give it to me for $3.95 instead of $7.95. Since their grandkids like the free on demand stuff that it came with, I said okay. Now waiting for the repair person which willl be a whole new adventure. The most recent time the cable went out (July), I saw the repair person for three days in a row before they got it fixed. I had to get permission from the condo association for them to dig up the neighbor's lawn and drill a hole in the basement wall. They never did that work, saying they figured out something else. The service guy was an independent contractor the cable company was paying and he told me it was not going to last but the cable company insisted he go with a bandaid solution the cable company's repair supervisor came up with instead of the complicated stuff which was what he believed was actually needed.

Still having some neck and back issues, so I spent a few bucks on disposable heating pads.

September 1- $0 :yay: I always do well on the months I start with a $0 day, here's hoping!
September 2-$0 :yay: I had a late-day frustration break down with the kids (trying to get the house ready for company) and really needed a break. Turned out DH needed one too (rough day at work) so we decided to meet for a half hour refresher. We were able to not ruin a $0 day though cause I had a Gift Card from Christmas for Dunkin Doughnuts. We never go there so we decided to finally use that. It was nice to spend a little adult time and get away from the house for a bit. Also went to Staples for a few things but used the free backpack G/C for that, and still have $35 left on it.
September 3- $25 Walgreen's, 2 belts for DD15 and white t-shirts for tye dyeing (for Disney.) $100 Sam's Membership renewal and groceries for DH's work and home, $10 gas. Went out to dinner but grandma and grandpa took us.
September 4- $150 Kohl's, kids school clothes. $12 Claires, earrings for kids. $5.00 Justice earrnings. $41 Aero, kids school clothes. $98 JCPenney's kids clothes. $15 lunch at the mall. $10 pizza for dinner. The kids had pretzels at the mall too, but I had coupons so they were free!!!
2 Lessons today (I knew them but was reminded of them.) Grandma likes to eat out. When she is here we go out. And GIRLS ARE EXPENSIVE!!!
September 5- Spent the day at Niagara Falls...$10 parking, $56 Maid of the Mist, $30 eating out lunch and dinner.
September 6- $38, last ballgame of the season, $60 groceries (though $30 of it was teeth whitening strips for DD15,) $3 Staples school supplies.
September 7- Decided to take the kids seperately to pick out their first day outifts. That was more headache maybe then it was worth and made for more spending days. Anyway, $145 school clothes for kids at Penney's (some I suspect will be returned.) And $1 for locer magnets for DD11. Also went to Chuck E Cheese for one last day beofre school starts lunch, but had a guest coupon still so we ate and played free.
September 8- $32 socks and lunch stuff, $27 dinner at Friendly's (been tradition for a dozen years) I used 3 kids eat free coupon and a $5 off coupon and got the bill cut in half.
September 9- Rough week! Today was supposed to be a $0 day, but my DH curprised me and took a vacation day today to spend with me (first day of school for DD15 so they wer all gone today.) He's been working 80 weeks and needed this so bad. We got the kids off to school, spent the morning together, went to lunch (I had a coupon) and then came home and took a nap. It was a fantastic day and sorth every penny! I literally cried mid day, it was that perfect of a day. So, lunch $16 (including tip, dessert and lots of leftovers for tomorrow) Gas for my car $45, bread store $30 (stocked up on jams, DD8 is a PB&J addict) and finally $35 for some additional lunch things.
September 10-$0:yay: It was rough, I wanted to go buy a gift for a party we have tomorrow (DD15's BFF's Sweet 16) but really wanted to get some work done around here and needed a $0 day so I will be going shopping for it in the morning.
September 11- DD15's BFF's sweet 16 party day. $16 cash plus $12 to make a candly flower pot and $5 for food for the kids to hold them over. (We went to a Free kids fest before. The plan was to have time to run home for a bite to eat but we got lost and so we didn't have long at the festival before we had to get to the party and not knowing when we'd eat I hit a drive though.)
September 12- I took DD8 adn DD15 to the amusement park, it was the lst day and we had free tickets. DH had gotten 7 thinking he and DD15 would go and she could take her 2 BFFs but he had to work and she had plans so the girls and I went. It is free parking and we didn't eat there so it was free. We gave a family the 4 extra tickets and they were very thankful. After we hit Subway and brought it home, $10.80. Then I did a LARGE grocery shopping, I needed a lot, $150. Tonight hubby took me out to dinner, I had a coupon for a free appetizer, $36. Going to try and start organizing my tornado of a basement tomorrow. It's the first full week of school and I need to getback into cleaning mode. Hopefully that will mean it will be a $0 day, I need to catch up!
September 13-$0 :yay: Kind of sad to get one today. I shoudl have paid dance tuition today, but DD11 decided to drop ballet, tap and jazz. She will still do hip hop and DD8 will still dance but won't pay till I go tomorrow. I always said I'd never push them to do anything they didn't want to, and I still won't, but now that she has decided this I am sad. She's been dancing 7 years. Today I worked on the basement and cooked several meals for the freezer and spent nothing.
September 14-$0 Well, with DD11 dropping dance the girl didn't know what my bill was so I will pay it tomorrow or Thursday. So, today was a no spend day after all!
September 15-$0 :yay: Took back bottles today and got back $25.45. That is a crazy amount of bottles. DH had told DD15 if she did it she could have the money but I finally had enough and did it myself. I don't think she realized how a nickle at a time adds up.
September 16-$0 :yay: Got a bunch of rebates and a large flex reimbursement check for DD's wisdom teeth, that with the $25 from bottles yesterday and I added $550 to the Disney account.
September 17- Dance Tuition $86, used hip-hop shoes $5, Sam's lunch, $2.68, Stock up @ Sam's (including some clothes for DH) $273.68, gas, $31.23
September 18- DH had to work out of town and attend a funeral, so DD8 and DD11 and I decided to keep him company in the car and make a day of it. He dropped us off at Corning Museum of Glass, $14 admission. We met back up for a late lunch $40 (ouch!) Then we waled in the little town, DH bought a sluch for me and the kids to share $2, then we took the kids to a place with bumper boats, it was $7.50 for the 2 of them. It was supposed to be 10 minutes, but there was no one there so they let them play as long as they wanted. They played for about an hour and when they were done they were soaked! We took their clothes off and put on the sweatshirt I had packed and wrapped them in blankets for the ride home. NOTE TO SELF, those boats spray too! After that we waited in the car for a while while DH worked (we had half naked kids remember.) So they played on their DSs and and I surfed on DIS. :) Then we made the 2 hours drive home. After I hit the grocery store, $80.83 and got DH some slipper and DD15 some medicine $18.22. After all that I was too tired to think about dinner so I got a pizza for $7.50. I spent a ton on groceries this week as I am refilling my freezer. I ahve piles of sloppy joe, a tray of lasagna and a tray of shells in there now (we had another tray of lasagne last night.) Tomorrow I will make stuffed peppers and stuffed cabbage and freeze much of it. I also will be putting pulled pork in the crock pot before I go to bed tonight so it can be frozen in the morning. I will also be making banana and zucchini bread tomorrow. Soooooo, that is the reason for the higher grocery bills this week.
September 19-$0 :yay: Well, I woke up feeling so fallish and wanting to go and enjoy the morning the way we usually do every fall weekend, picking apples and haivng cider and dounuts for breakfast. But, fall allergies were kicking my family's butts. DH was up all night and DD11 and DD15 were feeling kind of lousy too. DD8 was game as was DD11, but for the first time of the season I wanted to go as a family, so I decided to amke the first time next weekend. Sad to not go, but we stayed in, stocked the freezer and spent nothing.
September 20-$0 :yay: I did have to get my car worked on today to the tune of $800. :scared1: It was maintence (60,00 mile stuff, new tires, new brakes, oil change) and as my DH put it, a bill. So I am calling it as such and calling today a $0 day. But OUCH, that hurt!
September 21-$0 :yay: I actually MADE $10 today! At the kids dance school they have a place where yo ucan leave your old shoes and people can buy them for $5. I sold 2 pairs so far, so I got $10 today! I aslo took the kids for Frosty's but we had free coupons to hurry up and use, so that was free 9otherwise we wouldn't have gone.)
September 22- During dance I ran to Target. I looked and felt like a slob and was going straight to Girl Scouts after. So I got a new shirt, and saw they had flip flops on sale for $.62 a pair, so I got each kid 3 pairs for Florida/next year. I also got DD8 a pair of knock-off Twinkle Toesin a size up form her real twinkle toes, also on clearance for $10. So that ran me almost $50, but I felt so much less slob like, so it was worth it. Then we went to dinner with scouts, $7 and I got $20 in gas on the way home. Oh, and I sold another pair of shoes at sance so $5 for the Disney fund!
September 23-$0 :yay: The Staples Rebates have been coming in steadily, but today I got over $110 worth of them in the mail!
September 24- Uggg, it had been a $0 day till DD15 ased for money to go to Homecoming. She is 2 weeks away from being able to get a JOB! So I gave her $6 for the game and dinner with her friends (gave her $10, she actually brought home change!). (Back in my day we had a dance, I never went but the girls who did spent a lot of $ so I guess I get off cheap.) Anyway, I was worn out from a long week and when DH suggested that he and I take the younger 2 to our favorite pizza place I figures I had already blown the day so why not. So we spend $22 on a sheet pizza, at about half and brought the rest home, it will be lunch tomorrow, so not too bad. Oh, and on the way to the game I gave each of the girls a free coupon for a Frosty and they went and got those. I still have 11 left (they expire the end of the month, got piles of them this summer when we went to the free movies.) I gave DD $1 to buy a sheet of the Halloween free Frosty coupons.
September 25- Michael's $19.96 for a tye dye kit, going to attempt the Mickey tye dye in the morning. ACMoore $4.32 (2) clearance art kids for b-day party gifts. $35ish for gas (forgot receipt in the car.) $50.18 groceries at Sam's + ice cream for kids at Sam's $1.61. Lunch out with the kids $9.45. Needed to get DD15 an SAT calculator, DD11 a swim cap and a new hairdryer (mine is making me nervous) $40 at Target. A few groceries and headphones for the kids at Walmart $28.80.
September 26- $17 cider, donuts and piles of apples (we picked), $66.50 Wegman's, groceries. (Picking apples, coming home and turning them into a pie and having warm apple pie for dessert with the family...priceless!) Great Fall Day!!! I won't make the no spend goal though, DD needs band stuff (book, practice drum and drumsticks) and the store wasn't open on the weekend. :headache: Otherwise I could have made it!
September 27-$0 :yay: I stayed in and did the tye dye Mickey shirts today. I think I may have blown $40 but we will see tomorrow.
September 28-$0 :yay:
Septmeber 29-$0 :yay: Actually I spent $.48 on prints for a photo contest for DD11, but I had a return at the same store for $5.40 so instead I got back $4.92.

Ok, so I met my goal for no-buy days, groceries, and home improvement. But...we are spending waaaay too much $ on eating out and misc. shopping. The shopping was going great, until last Friday. Granted, part of that $ went towards a baby shower gift and a locksmith, but still. Not happy with Sept...time to start focusing on Oct.

I ended up exceding my zero day goal and overall have $18 left. Only went over in two categories. For next month I am moving my church collection from to my regular set monthly bills since I just comitted to tithing for a year and need to start thinking of it as a set bill. I will still have a giving category but it will be for the other stuff I might do.

My budget is a generous $750 and the zero day goal is 10.

16/12 No Buy days

Another good month. Stayed under budget by a fair amount. I've been doing no buy since April, and my grocery total has stayed fairly consistent. I think I might have to accept that I'm not going to change that much, but if I don't coupon and watch for sales the grocery total will get out of control. I have definitely cut back on the eating out, which is great. I'm also shocked at how little I have spent on clothes. I used to spend a lot on clothes.
