Epicuriouser & Curiouser: A Dining Review ~ 10/19-10/28/07

One of the perks of staying at a deluxe resort with lots of nice restaurants and lounges is a little thing that we like to call the “roll, waddle, and crawl factor.” You can roll out of bed and catch a late breakfast. You can waddle back to your room after a big dinner. And best of all you can crawl to bed after a long night of drinking at the bar, all without leaving the comfort of your resort. :woohoo:

We successfully practiced the waddle after dinner at Boma on day 1, so now it was time to activate the roll. We began day 3 with a 10am ADR at Boma for breakfast. This rocked (and we rolled ….get it?!) because we set the alarm for 9:30 and a half hour later we were drinking a delicious cup of freshly pressed Kenyan coffee! :cloud9:

Boma was still really busy when we checked-in, so we got a buzzer and patiently waited our turn. When our buzzer buzzed, a CM showed us to our seat, which strangely was a 12 top. Confused by the large table, I said, “But there are only 2 of us,” to which she replied, “Are you sure?” DGF and I looked at each other and then looked behind us, and not seeing 10 other people, confirmed that yes indeed it was just the 2 of us. She then muttered something to herself, turned around, and walked away, leaving us standing in the middle of the restaurant like 2 little lost puppies in search of our coffee. DGF leaned over and whispered, “I think we should follow her,” so we walked back up to the podium and mentioned to the hostess that we still needed to be seated. We were led to a nice table and everything worked out, but sheesh lady, don’t leave us hanging!

Despite their interesting approach to hostessing, Boma is a superb breakfast spot. The West African Frunch (a combination of lemonade, pineapple juice, guava juice, orange juice, and papaya juice), which we call Bongo juice because we’re weird, is fruitalicious, but the Kenyan coffee is the goods! Don’t be cheap, pay extra for the pressed pot! And then go buy some Kenyan coffee beans in the gift shop to take home! You won’t regret it!

On my plate, we have scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, pineapple, and brioche French toast.
IMG_1612.jpg

Everything on this plate was yummy, but the brioche French toast was hella good. I think I got thirds on this along with the bacon love.

DGF’s plate includes all the same stuff on my plate, plus pap with toppings.
IMG_1613.jpg

I’m scared of white, slimy-looking stuff named pap, but DGF said it tasted like cream of wheat, which may comfort you or may have no effect depending on your feelings about gruel, I mean mush, I mean delicious hot breakfasty cereal products (just in case we have a cream of wheat stock-holder in the audience).

For dessert (because brioche French toast should be followed by something sweet), I gathered this plate of goodies:
IMG_1614.jpg

It looks like red fruits, small assorted pastries, and ahh yes, more bacon.

Little did we know, as we hunted down our last side of pork, that we had entered the Bomuda Triangle, in which everything, including your unfinished, spendy, pressed pot of Kenyan coffee, disappears from your table! :scared1: It turns out that the same CM, who doubted our ability to count and then left us high and dry in the middle of the dining room, decided that we had had quite enough bacon for one morning and cleared our table. Allrighty then! Does that mean we don’t have to pay? No such luck. She apologized. We reminded her to take her meds. It was all good.

But please, don’t let these supernatural occurrences scare you away. Breakfast at Boma is the shiznit.

Your writing style and sense of humor is wonderful! I look forward to hearing more.

Are you planning on writing a TR as well?:)

Thanks! How sweet of you to say so! :o It’s been fun writing the dining review, but I don’t think a TR is in the cards. It’s back to school next week, so I’ll be writing lesson plans and grading papers in my spare time.

That's it! Narcoosee's is going on my list. We love our fried oysters and those looked some good. And then steak & lobster, who could ask for a more romantic dinner than that!!!

It was romantic and quieter than a lot of Disney restaurants. I definitely recommend it.

Speaking of good food, there are some amazing eats in NOLA! We ate at a Thai restaurant in the French Quarter that knocked my socks off, and I had a Creole crawfish and pasta dish at the Jazz Festival that was to die for. I wish I knew what it was!

ROFL!! :rotfl: That was too funny. Sorry that happened to you, especially with that yummy coffee! I agree with you that Boma's pressed coffee is so so good.

Great dining report! Loving the pictures and your writing style! :)

Hi DGF...so you posted some rediculous pics of me acting like a nutter and stuffing my face!? Well I am so not shocked. Actually, I am amused and highly entertained by your account of our last trip. I can't wait to read more. By the way,the breakfast pap at Boma was GOOD, not gruelly! Guess what? We leave in two weeks from today to go back to our world and eat a bunch more food and ride soarin'! :cool1:

I can't wait! I heart you! :flower3:

Would that be Crawfish Monica? I just made it last night using shrimp. YUMMO!

OK! I love this! :lmao: I totally agree!!! We ate/drank three times at Flying Fish last trip and thank goodness no one had to figure out bus routes after!

We do this!! Whilst at Poly and then it was Beach club and then it was the Boardwalk.

:rotfl: I feel the same way! I have a texture issue. Just like I don't like jello, pudding, whipped cream (I know, I know:sad2:I have tried! Really!) I can't do cream of wheat. But I do like oatmeal. Maybe it is because I have to chew it a little.
Little did we know, as we hunted down our last side of pork, that we had entered the Bomuda Triangle, in which everything, including your unfinished, spendy, pressed pot of Kenyan coffee, disappears from your table! Doesn't she know the price of coffee in this world! Esp. a great cup of joe!!:surfweb: People are killed for less everyday. I should know. I have and will kill for less- like cheesecake or Tusker beer.

We waddled back up to our room after breakfast at Boma and spent a few hours doing some work on our laptops. Yuck! But it is the price we pay for going to WDW in the middle of the semester (I teach community college & DGF is a student at the university). After due diligence, we were rewarded with a visit to the Food & Wine festival and dinner at bluezoo!

At Epcot, we watched these people dance:
IMG_2205.jpg

Played with some finger puppets:
IMG_2220.jpg

Talked to this lady, who was making dolls:
IMG_2223.jpg

Checked out some festival merchandise:
IMG_2226.jpg

And eventually made it to the World Showcase. We were still stuffed from breakfast, so we only stopped by a couple of booths. We got a spanakopita from Greece, which is a type of pie stuffed with spinach and cheese, all wrapped in phyllo dough. Very yummy!
IMG_2232.jpg

We also visited Canada to sample the cheddar cheese soup and ice wine. I don’t have a picture, but here are our thoughts. The soup is a lot like the stuff served at Le Cellier. It would make a great base for mac & cheese, but as a soup it was a little much for me. The ice wine was good, but sweeeet! I’ll save this one for dessert!

It was quite warm and crowded at Epcot, so we decided to head over to the Dolphin to explore & get a drink. What a cool resort!

Lobby
IMG_2279.jpg

This resort is undoubtedly swank, but full of conventioneers, which has its plusses and minuses. On the plus side, less people of the child persuasion. On the down side, it doesn’t feel very “Disney” to me. Briefcases and business suits just make me nervous, I guess.

After throwing back a couple of vodka tonics at the lobby bar, we sought out our dining destination. TE’s bluezoo wasn’t very busy, so we were seated early. The inside of this restaurant is funky and way too hip for the likes of us! Only in Orlando!
IMG_2276.jpg

To drink, DGF ordered the bluezootini, which she liked a lot because it wasn’t too sweet. I got a bottle of Conundrum, which is a white-wine blend out of Napa Valley. Very crisp and fruity. We decided to refrain from ordering an appetizer because we wanted maximum capacity for our much anticipated main course, but DGF really wanted a couple of oysters on the half shell:
IMG_1592.jpg

Were the oysters an aphrodisiac? Maybe - if we weren’t so tired from walking around all day and so full from eating all that food!

For our main course, we both went for the exorbitantly expensive, yet ultimately delectable, Two-pound Maine "Cantonese" Lobster, which is first fried and then tossed in sticky soy glaze.
IMG_1593.jpg

This was amazing, but I’m still debating the moral, ethical, and legal ramifications of frying lobster!

By way of side dishes, we shared a lobster-stuffed baked potato and tempura green beans.
IMG_1596.jpg

The green beans were so wrong, they were right, and I don’t know what aioli-oli-o is, but I like it. Actually, it’s a fancy way of saying mayonnaise, and this one was chock full of black truffley goodness. I could eat these green beans at every meal, ad infinitum….and the potato wasn’t bad either. This was an awful lot of food though, and I think we decided that next time we would split the lobster, but I may have been delirious from all that aioli, so who knows!? :confused3

Against our stomach’s wishes, we ordered dessert. We chose to share the Warm Chocolate Cake, with a liquid ganache center, Maracaibo chocolate cream pudding, and peanut ice cream.
IMG_1599.jpg

Hard core chocolate on chocolate action! The only thing sexier might be the molten chocolate cake at California Grill!

We also went for a couple of cappuccinos:
IMG_1597.jpg

Coffee rules!

The bill for this kingly feast came out to a king’s ransom, but it’s worth the splurge! Just remember that the Swan & Dolphin restaurants don’t accept Key to the World cards (or DDE, for that matter). We had a scary few seconds, in which the washing of many dishes was imminent, until DGF remembered she had brought an emergency credit card with her. Phew!

Day 4 ~ Hollywood Brown Derby & California Grill ~ Coming Soon

Now I have a legitimate reason to mortgage the house and go back to Blue Zoo!!!!!! I've got to try those green beans & mayo..:rotfl2:

Seriously, wasn't that lobster incredible? I'd never thought I'd care for fried lobster, but oh my word it was sooooo good. Now that we know it's enough to split I can tell DH we can afford the green beans!

You have me laughing and salivating all at the same time! Can't wait to read more! :goodvibes

 That sounds like it requires coordination…kinda like walking and chewing gum! Thanks for reading! :)

ROFL!! :rotfl: That was too funny. Sorry that happened to you, especially with that yummy coffee! I agree with you that Boma's pressed coffee is so so good.

Great dining report! Loving the pictures and your writing style! :)

Luckily we caught her in the act and were able to rescue the java! It was pretty funny though because at first, we both thought we had gone to the wrong table or something. So we were looking around like “Hey, wha’ happened?” I always assume that I’m the crazy one before I start pointing fingers.

Hey, who gave you an account? Seriously, one DIS addict in the family is enough. You are supposed to be my co-dependent. Once you develop a DIS problem, who will facilitate you? JK, DGF. Glad you’re here! :cutie:

Thanks for the update. I can't wait to try Narcoossee's!

Narcoossee’s was da bomb. Don’t forget to request a seat by the window!

Would that be Crawfish Monica? I just made it last night using shrimp. YUMMO!

Hmmm…maybe Crawfish Monica. Sounds good? What’s in it?

OK! I love this! :lmao: I totally agree!!! We ate/drank three times at Flying Fish last trip and thank goodness no one had to figure out bus routes after!

I’d love to stay at an Epcot resort for that reason! Someday, I hope! Flying Fish is one of our faves on property. Somehow we always manage to make it back for Illuminations, but it’s a struggle!

:rotfl: I feel the same way! I have a texture issue. Just like I don't like jello, pudding, whipped cream (I know, I know:sad2:I have tried! Really!) I can't do cream of wheat. But I do like oatmeal. Maybe it is because I have to chew it a little.

Now whipped cream is taking that aversion a little too far, don’t ya think!? I do understand texture issues, though. I have a hard time with squeaky foods, like when you eat zucchini or an apple with its skin on and it squeaks. That drives me nuts!

Doesn't she know the price of coffee in this world! Esp. a great cup of joe!!:surfweb: People are killed for less everyday. I should know. I have and will kill for less- like cheesecake or Tusker beer.

I know! That CM was a couplet short of a sonnet, that’s for sure! :headache: Never separate a women from her coffee or her cheesecake!

The whole meal was incredible! Actually, it’s funny because my DGF was looking over your dining report last night and said, “Let’s skip Kona and go back to bluezoo. What’s another hundred bucks!” So we may have to change our ADRs for later this month. OMG, those green beans….

I know this is really mean and WEIRD to say...but I'm glad to see you're drinking in your food reports. Nothing bugs me more than to read about two adults having a fine dining experience and then they order smoothies or a milkshake with their steak...I usually can't read those reports. It's just "Yuck!" It's one reason I won't have dinner at Cinderella's...I can't have Prime Rib without having a nice glass of wine with it...It's a dinner wasted in my opinion. But, I'm enjoying your reports...WITH ALCOHOL!!!

Wonderful food trippie and I can't wait for more!! You are hi-lar-ious!! So much, that I snorted Diet Pepsi out of my nose :lmao: Very few food reports do this to me...;)

Thanks for the laughs, can't wait for more!! popcorn::

That sounds a lot like what I had. Thanks for the recipe. Yummy! I’ll have to make it this weekend. :thumbsup2

I can’t figure out the whole smoothie thing either. How do you have room for dinner? But I agree – pairing a nice bottle of wine with a good meal is absolutely one of the finer things in life! Cheers!

 Thanks for reading and laughing! One question: does Diet Pepsi do anything for your sinuses? Mine are killing me!

Oh my goodness, that dessert at Blue Zoo looks heavenly. I've just drooled all over my keyboard.

P.S. Trying not to think of the frying lobster situation :guilty:

Current score: Blue Zoo - 2; Brenda & Jay - 0

I give up! We'll go to Blue Zoo on our next visit ... between you and Kathy I'm a believer! :lmao:

Oh, and Bomuda Triangle ... :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
