EPI PEN and Heat

My DD has severe allergies and we have to carry around an Epipen everywhere we go.. It has temperature restrictions of room temperature. It does have a warning of being able to go on an excursion of up to 80-85 degrees for a day. We are going at the end of June and if it was only 80 degrees that would be heavenly. Unfortunately I know that is not going to happen. We called the company directly and they could not give me any ideas. They said keep it out of the heat and direct sunlight. Don't put it in a cooler with an ice pack because then it could get too cold. I am stuck. I know I am not the only one in Disney with an epipen so I am looking for what others do. What about those of you who live in this heat?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I will keep it with me at all times including on rides but it will still be HOOOTTTTT out.

I've always just kept mine in my purse or bag and it's been fine. My doctor said they are meant to withstand everyday life, just not to leave it in direct sunlight or locked in a hot care. If you are concerned, I would say the Frio wallet might be a good bet. I know several people here have posted using them for insulin.

I would agree also with the Frio Cold Pack. Go to www.coolerconcept.com for more information and ordering. The wallet will keep for hours in the low 70s for 100 degree temperatures, and it can be reactivated by putting it in water for a few minutes.

I have been using one for several years, as well as other people in the forum who are using them.

We just carry ours with our other supplies - but I keep it with me. We are usually going in and out of the heat (into rides, stores, etc.).

They likely do make big enough Frio wallets for them - maybe one that would fit an insulin pen - look their website or give Cooler Concepts a call. A Frio would do the trick though.

If I was really sitting out in the sun all day (like at the beach) I would put the stuff into a waterproof container and sit that on the stuff on the top of my cooler (not stuck in the ice) to keep it cool perhaps. We've just kept it in the shade.

I've carried my kids' Epipens in my purse in 98 degree weather. The pharmacist told me Florida summer heat wouldn't harm the Epipens. He was a medic in Vietnam and said he carried them through the intensely hot and humid jungles without a problem. He also warned NOT to use an ice pack with them, as it could harm them. If you're at all concerned whether your Epipen has gone bad, check that the liquid is still clear. If it's cloudy, get a new Epipen. At Disney, I carry 2 with me and keep 2 extras in the room, just in case.

I've used a little bottle cooler that we had when our kids were infants. Good luck!

The First Aid at the parks will also keep extras in the fridge or just in the cooler A/C air. They've been very nice and considerate this week thus far.

I keep it in the mesh pouch on top of our cooler (I think it's meant for sandwiches and stuff). It stays cool enough, but not cold. If we're not taking the cooler, I just keep it in a bag. We've never had a problem. I live in FL and they're in the heat all day, even left in the car a few times (oops) and never gone cloudy.

Really surprised the company had no specific info. As a result of FDA regulations, pharmaceutical companies usually have a pharmacist able to give this sort of info. With my drug and its company, I usually have to wait for a call back from the pharmacist, but they always call and can give me specific info. Otherwise, to eliminate guessing, go to your public library and ask for the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference). It will give you the info you need.
