Epcot's version of Canada

PanamaMike said:
It is not the same movie that Expo '67 used. It was shot by Disney for use at Epcot.

This film was actually filmed around 1978-1979 / 1980 .. prior to Epcot opening.

It MAJORLY needs updating.

Some interesting notes on Circlevision movies (comments about America the Beautiful) from Koenig's "More Mouse Tails"

Koenig said:
For the filmmakers, the greatest challenge was ensuring that something interesting was happening on every screen. Sometimes there might be beautiful scenery on one side of the road and nothing on the other. Full-round vision also made it difficult for the director to ensure that unwanted images stayed off the screen. Inconsistencies in the 1966 film America the Beautiful, for example, included tissues blowing across the battlefield during the Battle of Gettysburg, a child picking his nose and cattle jumping each other. Near the Liberty Bell, an elderly man trips on a crack in the sidewalk and quickly looks around to make sure no one can see him. Across from Independence Hall, a mother holding a cigarette lowers her hand an accidentally burns her young daughter's wrist. Since the cameras were assembled in a circle, there was no place for people to hide to watch the filming. Consequently, Walt Disney can be spotting in about a half-dozen scenes, watching the action from the shadows.

I have to agree with Darren on this one. All the countries are pretty stereotyped. I'm much more offended by the Americanized French pastry in the France pavilion than the silly lumberjack costumes.

I'm just talking about the look of the pavilion though...not the movie inside. Circlevision movies make me nauseous but I guess I'm not missing much!

We are from Niagara and were very surprised that there was none of Niagara in the movie!!!

Exactly! How can they have a movie about Canada and not show Niagara Falls?? Very surprising to me.

Disney's answer (the one I spieled off that is): Because the Falls are 1/2 American...let's get places on film that are 100% Canadian.

Now there's Canadian pride! I've even been there and I didn't learn that on the tour!

We just returned from Epcot and we must say we were VERY disappointed in the Canada 360 movie. It was the same movie they played at Expo 86 in Vancouver. I remember it. If you notice the credits, it was made in 1984, and of course, you can't mistake those 80's hairdos  Disney must have bought the rights to it after Expo. We didn't even recognize our own city, Vancouver, because Canada Place wasn't on the waterfront, which was built just before Expo 86, and aerial pictures of Toronto didn't show the Skydome. Hopefully they will come up with something new SOON!

We stand on guard for thee! :)

It couldn't have been made in 1984 it's the same movie that was there when the pavillon opened in 1982.

I know they redid the movie at some point. I thought there was a scene with Kurt Browning skating at Edmonton Mall. That would make it post-1988. Am I getting my Canadian movies mixed up... 'cause we know there's so many out there :goodvibes

It's funny. We complain about how dated the movie is and we laugh at it but if anybody ever stays up late enough or gets up early enough to watch the television stations when they play O'Canada, you'll notice that THEIR films are way out of date as well. I don't think they've had fashions like you see on those films since the early 70's and some of them are so yellow tinted and scratched, you'd swear they were old newsreels. :rotfl:

I think all the movies at Epcot are dated and if the China one has been updated (to include Hong Kong), then I believe it's just an add on as opposed to a fully updated movie.

I am with you there! I am from Niagara also, can't believe they basically have left Southern Ontario out of the mix.

I have been completely ashamed of the Canadian Pavilion and movie for years and have had many a rant about it, so I am not going to do it again. It is completely shameful, the only Canadian's are obviously Inuit or Native, the rest of us don't count! Before I get flamed, I am not saying that they are not an important part of Canada so don't even go there, just making an observation. The pavilion is supposed to represent the country.....not sure how it does that.

Anyway, Misslissa, where are you from? I am in St. Catharines!! :)

Yeah, gonna have to agree with my fellow CM. There was no update to the movie you speak of. It's the same one that's been there since the opening. The last time I was there was May 04, and it had not changed since then. My brother's g/f just got home from doing the program as well...and still, same movie.

In 1999, they were thinking about updating it...but the $ went to Millennium Village. Guess when the $ is in the budget they'll make a new one. But honestly...why spend that $ on something that people (outside fo Canada it appears) love. Every person who ever came up to me after the movie always said how beautiful our country looks and that their desire to visit increased after seeing the movie. I'm pretty sure people know that bell bottoms and mullets are out now every where in the world...it's a much smaller place than it used to be. :)

I bet I've seen the movie more times than you...and I can tell ya, there are plenty of white people (maybe not from southern ON?) in the show. I'd probably point out that any time you visit the pavilion (including the year I was there) you'll have about 90% of the international programmers be white and maybe 10% visible minorities. If that eases your mind at all. I'm sure people know other cultures exist in Canada after visiting the pavilion. No need to worry :thumbsup2

Just to be nitpicky, the film shown at Expo 86 was called "Portraits of Canada" and was actually produced by Disney for Telecom Canada's Pavillion. I have been told that after Expo 86, "Portraits of Canada" was shown at Epcot for a period of time, but people complained that they preferred the old movie "O Canada" so it returned. I've never actually seen this statement backed up by any mention of the Expo 86 movie being used at Epcot though so it may not be true.

Anyway, I remember going to see the movie at Expo 86 many times, although I couldn't tell you a thing about it now. Most of what I remember is the McBarge, the Native Storyteller show at the GM PAvillion (now at Knott's Berry Farm), UFO H2O, and a movie about a girl and an alien red ball exploring BC. It was a good time!
