I read somewhere about dolls in WS that can be dressed or made the way you want. Has anyone ever bought one of these dolls and where are they? How much do they cost? I was thinking of doing some of my Christmas shopping for the children while we are there without them. Any info you have would be great.

The dollmaker is in Germany. My dd had one made about 2 years ago...she made it look like herself (sort of anyway!) with Belle's gold gown for a dress. I believe that doll was about $100. The dollmaker and his wife made her up for us...they were terrific. We even had them pose for a photo with the doll. There are cheaper dolls...it all depends on how you want them dressed. The Disney outfits are the more expensive ones....wow, that's a surprise!

I could be wrong. We saw what I think you are talking about in Germany. You can choose the type of head and buy separate outfits. Very cute. Not sure about the price. They looked like Amerian Girl dolls. I don't know if you know what those are. Hope this helps a little.

I think you may be talking about a store in the Germany area of WS. I believe it's called Der Teddybar. I think you can choose how you want the dolls put together and choose different outfits for them. I'm not sure of cost, but maybe someone else can chime in on that one.

Yes, at the toy store in Germany you can have a doll made, its a German doll maker called Engel-puppen. My dd's saved $ for over a year and had them done, it was wonderful. They are very expensive, IMHO collectible dolls, back then it was about 130 for a doll with a regular dress and about 150 for a disney dress. We had ours made and then paid to have them shipped directly home to make sure they stayed perfect.

Wow, I didn't know this! What a perfect souvenier for my DD8 who LOVES dolls of all kinds. If anyone else has more to share about this store I'd love to hear it!

We looked at the dolls you are talking about last week. They are at Germany in Epcot, in the der teddybear shop. I don't remember the cheapest, but the most expensive was $300. I think I looked at one that was $150.

My DD8 has two of these -- the first we bought ready-made and the second she picked out everything. You get a choice of head, hair, and clothes. The people who work there are wonderful, and as I mentioned in a previous post, they are going to replace the wig of one of the dolls that dd3 gave a haircut to when we go back in december. I remember them being about $140. They are 18" dolls and fit into all the American Girl doll clothing.

We're planning on getting these for the big Christmas present for our girl's this Christmas.

I am very familiar with the American Girl dolls...are these dolls comparable in quality to American Girl dolls?

The basic doll has a torso that is cloth, though I believe that you can get it with the entire body vinyl/plastic (whatever they are made of...). As far as appearence and quality I would say they are definitely on par with the American Girls dolls. I actually like their faces and skin tone a little more than the AG dolls. If you want to get an idea of what they are like here is the website: http://www.engel-puppen.com/dolls.asp

The selection on the site is not as large at the Germany pavilion of course, but if you go to the section which has the dolls with soft bodies, and go to the ones that are priced around 120-150 dollars that is what they have in Epcot.

We are already overrun with American Girl dolls, so can you just buy an authentic German outfit?

Lisa Belle, yes you can just buy the German outfit or any or the other ones that you like. The outfits are not inexpensive though.

The dolls are very nice. We planned to buy an outfit from them for our DD's AG dolls, since she has so many dolls. The non-Disney outfits were something like $60!!! My DD decided she'd rather spend the money to get more things than just one doll dress.

I will say, though, that the dolls and their clothes are very very nicely made and they have outfits from different countries around the world. Just be prepared to spend alot of $$$. (We've been to the American Girl Place -- and I felt that these prices made AG look really inexpensive!!!).

Another thing, some kids may be thrown by this -- since you can have them make a doll for you, they have doll heads on display (not attached to the doll bodies). When my daughter was younger she found this very disturbing!

My girls have done this several times. Usually they save save save their money because they are about $145 for the basic doll and go up with a Disney outfit but sometimes their softy dad just pays. ;)

I don't think it's worth it to just purchase the outfits as they start at $65 and that is for the basic ones - Disney princess outfits are much higher - I think about $85 to $90. The most fun is making the dolls, anyway. The girls get a big thrill out of doing this & they do it almost every trip. :goodvibes I love watching it, too. The dolls are beautiful, much, much better quality than AG. They can wear the same clothes, but the shoes will not be interchangeable. The German dolls have wider, shorter feet.

Around the holidays - we have seen this on several Thanksgiving visits - Helmut Engel is in the shop to sign the dolls. He also makes about 30 limited ed holiday dolls. Last years was St. Lucia. My girls have always opted to make their own, but he still signed them. I have seen him in the shop at other times of the year also, but not sure when.

To ship them home, which we have never done as the girls always want the dolls with them, costs about equal to paying the tax and keeping the dolls with you - which you do not pay if you ship them. Our last visit my younger DD made a beautiful doll in a Greek wedding dress - the outfits from the different countries are amazing. Have fun!

I had completely forgotton about Helmut Engel being there at times. My dd's doll was signed by him when we were there in '04. It is a beautiful doll. I actually like them better than the AG dolls. I think I said my dd's doll was over $100...I asked her and she said it was more like $150!! Since I didn't pay for it, I obviously forgot the price...she didn't!!!

Cabanafrau, I always knew I was a Princess, you have made it official, thank you. If I remember right the outfits we looked at were in the $60 range.

Well I took a look at my daughters American Girl doll, and realized it too has a cloth torso. So I would say that the quality is pretty much identical.
