Epcot tragedy!

Thats grim.

Must have been a pre-existing condition thats the cause of death.....Ive been on the ride, its not that bad atall.

I hadn't heard about this but yes its tragic.

I have never been on this ride yet so cannot comment on the suitability of a 4 year old riding it.
However, sorry to be so blunt in the face of a sad sad event but my son is 8 and whilst he is slightly small for his age there is no way he would have been tall enough at the age of 4.
At that age how much is he really going to understand on a ride like this?

Events like this put things into perspective don't they?

I read this too, it is so sad, and my thoughts go out to the family invloved

there is another thread running on this smewhere here.
I still can't work out why they took him on that ride at that age no matter how tall he was.

One can only assume they didn't know how "bad" the ride is??

Awful though. Lets hope they find out what caused it.

Have to agree with you on this one. I guess the g-force pressure, etc did not help, but you can only think it was an existing condition.

Think this is probably right, however, is this a ride for a 4 year old?
Apologies(again) not trying to sound uncaring.

actually i agree with you on this one, i would never take a child who imo is to young to understand such a ride on it. maybe i am too protective :confused3

Oh dear, this is very sad news.
I agree the boy must have had a pre-existing condition. I don't think the ride would cause death in any healthy individual, either adult or child.
Both our DS's rode this year - 5 and half and 6 and half - this was after they had been exposed to the likes of ToT ans Space Mountain. They were Ok with it, but I would never have allowed them to try it at 4.

Oh How tragic :guilty:

I never let chelsea on it last year, it did enough to Martyn he had awful sickness afterwards, and he is a grown man,and has rode all the rides at the parks but that one knocked him for six,I suppose its what your body can handle but at 4, that is young :guilty:

No you're not over-protective. As others have said, I feel nothing but enormous sympathy and sadness for the family - the worst nightmare for any parent, but IMHO 4 year olds should be on Dumbo not Mission Space!

Extremely sad news. My thoughts are with the family.

Natalie, no you are not too protective - at that age children should be going on Peter Pan, Winnie The Pooh etc

Its quite right that a 4 year old should be on Dumbo, Small World etc etc, and for precisely that reason, my 4 year old wont be going on it. I make the decision on the suitability of a ride for my daughter purely on enjoyment grounds though (as the height restrictions are out of my hands). As I said earlier, the Mission Space ride is really pretty tame....you dont go fast, there's nothing to scare you, you dont get shaken around, you do get to experience the feeling of weightlessness and the effects of gravity. My 4 year old wont be going on it next year (she will be 5 then), but for no reason of perceived safety unsuitability, she wont be on it simply because I dont feel she would really understand whats its all about, and would probably find it a bit boring. Im pretty certain the ride wouldnt produce the "again! again!" reactions that Woody Woodpecker, Goofy and Flying Unicorn obtained from her.
I have always thought Disney did a pretty good job at enforcing and assessing height restrictions, and to be honest, I trust their judgment completely.

Disney have been criticised in some quarters for pretty much immediately re-opening the ride. Aparantly 8.6 million riders have experienced it since it opened, without any kind of physical injury. I think they have made the right decision.....but then I think Ebay shouldnt have pulled the live8 ticket ad's, so what do I know ;-)

i think they need to re-think the requirements for riding it...
clearly height isn't enough.......when i first heard about it, i must have asked my husband 10 times "how can a 4 year old ride that?"....

I think a lot of these rides need an age restriction as well as a height restriction. My 2 year old is huge for his age and is over 40" now. He will probably be tall enough for Mission Space at age 3. Obviously, there is no way on earth I would let him ride it (this boy freaked on Dumbo ;) ). You do get very, very young children who meet the height restrictions for things like TOT, R&RC etc etc. I really dont think that small kids should be allowed on these rides, no matter how much parents protest that "My little Johnny will LOVE it". Ive lost count of the times Ive seen little kids in tears after riding stuff that (in MY opinion) is just not suitable for them. Bring in AGE restrictions - maybe kids could get a little "passport" stamped with their DOB or something?

Of course, my heart goes out to this poor, poor family. What a tragic incident. I cannot imagine what they are going through.
