Epcot strategy - will this work?

Visiting at the end of March with three of my kiddos (one is under 3).
On our "break" day I am scheduling our Fastpasses in the late afternoon so that we can utilize child swap and be able to get on both Soarin and TT.
So, I have split us into 2 people reservations for Soarin/TT, and then Meeting Disney Pals/Mission Space. That gives us each 2 FP reservations.
Now, this will be our 2nd Epcot day, so there are no other T2 rides we want to go on. What I am wondering if I can do is... schedule a T2 ride for all 4 of us BEFORE our Soarin/TT FP windows, that we will just skip. So then after the Pals/MSpace FP, our 3 will be done. Then, would we be able to schedule a T1 FP at this point, since our 3 would be expired/used?

Yes, that will work. Book that early FP and allow it to expire.

There's been some discussion that this may not always work. It seems like it works for people if their last FP is the Tier 1. We had ours as Tiers 2-1-2 on our trip in May and could not get a new Tier 1 because of the expired Tier 2. It made us change and use that Tier 2 first. Other people have posted that they've had that problem. But that was also the first month of being able to make changes from your phone so its possible that's changed. @marciemi posted that she has verified 2-2-1 many times and it works. She was also taking about testing different orders but I never saw an update on that (I could have missed it). So you may want to be on the safe side and order your rides appropriately.
