Epcot attendance up larger than expected

It's a good thing America doesn't have an NHS or the government would be in REAL financial strife ;)

Hmm. build attractions and people come? I don't get it? Why didn't Epcot attendance increase when they cut hours, workers, and maintenance, added nothing new and let what was there deteriorate?

Paul;)

The numbers in the article are all that impressive really... 4% in an improving economy. Also, it doesn't address whether those are new guests or are merely being shifted from other parks.

That said, many are saying attendance and bookings are doing well.

Disney's quarterly earnings call is on Wednesday, and since Eisner has been on the defensive lately, we might actually get even more info than normal.

I do agree with PKS, though. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why Epcot's attendance was falling...

But:

--That's a 4% increase when the prior year was an 8% drop.

--Mission Space was only open 3 months out of that year.

--The consultant says they beat everyone's expectations, so somebody in the industry thinks 4% looks good.

I assume the article is refering to the 2003 calendar year. If so, 4% is pretty good. It will be interesting to see what the 2004 numbers will be - along with the rest of the parks of course. Have the 2003 numbers for the other three parks been published yet ?

Mission Space had some soft openings last July. I rode it right after the 4th of July.

Presumably, Mission Space wouldn't have been expected to have a significant impact on admissions until it was actually officially to be open.

The fall opening was only a press-thing. The "semi-hard" summer opening was widely publicised.

.....nooooo......it means that the figures are relative----to the prior year's performance, to analyst's expectations, to industry-wide figures, etc.

But, other than the regulars/locals, don't you expect that most people who might have been influenced to come to Epcot to ride Mission Space would have done so after the official opening and related advertising campaign?

They exceeded everybody's expectations

Strange you would think that ME would be crowing about this. I wonder who everybody is? Does anyone know how Amusement Business magazine comes up with these figures?

ME can't crow because Disney does not release or discuss attendance figures...

If you are not a liberal at 20 you have no heart..if you are not a conservative at 40 you have no head..but if you vote for George W Bush-you have no sense....

Still you think that he could crow about attendance being up without talking numbers....which I've heard him do before.
