My DH & I want to do a Disney cruise in the next couple years, but with him confined to a wheelchair, we are concerned there may not be enough to do outside the ship (Ports of Call). Is there plenty to keep us occupied and enough for someone in a wheelchair to do if we just stayed on the ship the whole time?

If we did go off the ship, how easy is it to get onto dry land and do activities off the ship?

I've only been on one DCL, but have two more booked!

We did the land/sea in Jan. 2006. We were in Nassau 10 years ago and decided to forego it. This was an awesome decision! We stayed on board, slept in, grabbed some breakfast at the buffet, went to the very empty adult pool, took the bridge tour, etc.

I'm taking my mom on the 4 night in less than 5 weeks and we will not get off the ship at Nassau. For my 7 night in Jan. 2008, my friend and I will probably skip one of the ports, maybe Cozumel. We love staying on board while everyone else is gone!

No one in my family is in a wheelchair, but they are frequent on the ship. I also know of some Make A Wish kids who are wheelchair-bound and the cruise is a great option! As for getting around in the ports, it depends on the ports. I know for Nassau, the streets are tiny and sometimes there are no sidewalks.

I believe that you could cruise several times with DCL, never leave the ship except for Castaway Cay, and always find something to do. If you take a look for Navigators, it will give you a feel for the variety of things that are always happening to keep you busy, if you are not content to read a book in the shade (or the sun) while at sea or in port.

We cruised the Western itinerary - Key West, Cozumel and Castaway Cay are likely all destinations where you could disembark with relative ease and with DCL's assistance - only Grand Cayman required tendering which you might not want to tackle.

Castaway Cay has paved walkways, so you would likely enjoy disembarking and taking a tour, taking in Cookies for lunch, etc.

I say Go For It!

On the 4 day, no tenders are needed for Nassau or Castaway Cay. On CC, there are balloon-tired wheel chairs available to navigate the sand. Plenty to do on the ship tho. There were first run movies in the theater on CC day, I know, as well as many other activities.
