Enlighten me

OK...I am hetero,(yes, I know I can't spell!) and have been married almost 14 years, with 3 kiddos. That being said...I have a degree in music, and the college I went to shared a building with the drama department...I spent a lot of time in the company of many gay/lesbian friends. I'm just curious about the rainbow...within 1 particular circle of Christianity, the rainbow is a sign of "De Colores" which is used to signify, basically, love all regardless.
In 5 years of being a music major, nobody that I knew could really tell me the origins of the rainbow to the gay community. Can anybody here satisfy my curiosity?

Great question, and gave me an excuse to look it up on-line , unfortunately DVC~OKW beat me to the post (I even had found the same site! )

But (yea.. I started a paragraph w/ "But" ... I think I just killed all the English majors/teachers) I found info on Wiki and wanted to share it too.

You could use "however" - my spell checker is forever suggesting that word to fill in for all my "but"s (is that even a word???)

Thank you -- that was very interesting. I'd always thought it was an outgrowth of Jesse Jackson's "Rainbow Coalition" in the late 70's -- a sort of an "embracing diversity" thing.
