Has anyone ordered engraved (or etched) wine glasses? I'm looking for a reputable store online or off. Any idea how much lead time they need? I want to get them done beforehand, so getting them done at Aribas Bros. at DTD isn't an option.

TIA!!

Jennifer

I know a girl who did them herself....They came out really nice, she just used a stencil.

I used to work at Things Remembered. They are a chain and are in many malls. They have a very decent turn-around time (depending on how many items you need done -- can have same-day, or longer if you have time), but their prices have gone up since I worked there. They will etch/engrave their own items, or items that you bring in (for an extra fee). I am not sure what the prices are at this time, but you can look them up in the phone book to find a local store. I'm sure they probably have a website too. I'm not saying they will be your cheapest option! But they are an option. HTH.

Jonette,
Do you know what she used to do it? Was it an acid or a paint? Back in the day, I used to use a sandblaster at work. Then we upgraded to an attachment on the engraving machine. I am curious about the technique to do it yourself. Thanks.

I am not sure....I will have to find out for you.

Jennifer,

Just so you know Aribas Bros has a webisite you can order them off of and have them delivered thats what im going

Good Luck

I am the bride that Jonette referred to that etched my own glasses. I used an acid glass etching cream and made my own stencils. I bought the creme at Michaels Craft Store and they do not make Disney stencils. My glasses all had a Beauty and the Beast silouhette on them that I made in photoshop from a snagged image off the web and the guests name on the back. I used champagne flutes that I bought in Target at $10 per dozen. The only downside to making glasses yourself is that each glass requires its own stencil since they are not reusable and you have to hand cut each and every one. I also etched juice glasses for the two children attending my wedding with an image of Beauty for my flowergirl and the Beast for her little brother.

This is what the final product looked like.

If you do use Arribas Brothers website they use a different font for engraving online than they do on site in Disney. I had purchased Mickey Mouse glasses in Disney for my children that were engraved there and when one of them got broken I used the website to replace it. When it arrived the font was a much smaller script font versus the "sliced" engraving that they do on site. There was nowhere on the site to request a font or choose the look of the engraving, so you should inquire as to what choices you have, if any, and what the final product will look like before you order online.

I also used to work at Things Remembered here in New Jersey (I was the regional training manager) - they are still in most malls (750 stores nationwide) and they do have a website. You can get your glasses done in most stores in a few hours or overnight (but not close to holidays, that may take a little longer). They do have quite a good selection of glasses to purchase and they will do your own glasses (but there is an additional set up fee - like a fee to use their machinery - plus a fee for the engraving itself). They no longer charge by the letter, but by the word or phrase - when I left it was like $5 for names (i.e., John and Mary) and $5 for the date (i.e., July 4, 2006 or 7-4-06). The engraving fee also applies when you buy the glasses from them (but not the set up fee). There are a number of letter styles and little designs (hearts, flowers, bells, etc.) that you can choose from, but no Disney designs. If you have a specific design you want to add, you can bring in photo-ready copy and for a $50 fee you can have it scanned and put on a disc that has been formatted for use in the engraving computers (but you cannot use a copyrighted design, like a Disney design (i.e., you can use a Cinderella design from a storybook that is not Disney, but you can't use Disney's Cinderella). HTH

Tammy,
Wow those are beautiful! They must have looked even prettier in person. Thanks for sharing.

Nicolle~ Thanks so much. They were far from perfect since it was my first attempt ever at etching glass (and there were some causalities, lol) but my guests all loved them and when I go to their houses they are proudly displayed in their china cabinets. It really made me happy to make them and know that my guests all loved them.

Tammy -- Your glasses look amazing!!

Was the etching creme smelly, or were there any other "side effects" from the craft project?

I agree with you re: Arribas Bros. I had a glass etched at the DTD store one year, then went back a few years later and had some more glasses etched but the font was different because it isn't a stencil or a machine, it's their handwriting.

Jennifer

Jennifer~ Thanks! Honestly I dont remember if the etching creme had a smell at all. I think it did, but nothing really bad. Perm solution in the Beauty Salon is way way worse! I didnt have any side effects from the craft project. It does state to use rubber gloves (which are included if you buy the glass etching KIT in Michaels Craft store). I didnt wear them and I never got it on my skin so I cant say what would happen if it did get on you. Im sure it would eat at your skin though since it can eat through glass.

Tammy,
Your glasses are really nice. You spent a lot of time on that project, but it seems as if it were worth it. Your guests enjoyed (and continue to do so) them and that's really what counts. Did you use contact paper for your stencil? My sister has used the glass etching creme on a few projects and used the contact paper for her stencil.

Tink~ Thanks for the compliments! I did use contact paper for my stencils, but I had tried to print the image right on the contact paper and the ink wouldnt dry. So I ended up having to print the image onto regular paper and then use spray glue to glue the paper to the top of the contact paper. Then I peeled the backing off the contact paper and applied the stencil to the glass. It would have been a lot easier and a lot less bulky if I was able to get the ink to dry on the contact paper. It may work on other contact, but I used the clear contact with the glossy surface and the ink from the injket printer I used just refused to dry.

Etching things yourself is fun :thumbsup2

I, too, etched glass vases for my table centerpieces. I used a variety of mickey head scrap-booking punches and punched them into clear contact paper (to make a stencil that would completely adhere to the glass but be removed easily). I applied the etching cream (I found it cheapest at HobbyLobby) and applied it with a paint brush(it didn't eat through the bristles like I'd expected, thank goodness!).

It didn't smell... I did it all in our kitchen. I have EXTREMELY sensitive skin and it didn't affect me when it touched me while I was rinsing the cream off.

You can find other ideas and directions by googling etching glass or other similar search terms.

You could call ahead to Arribas Brothers...I did that and you get a discount with your AP passes
