I understand that pin-trading is big business in USA............. but Im not sure if anyone would be interested in any pins from UK? I am able to pick some up at English airport if they would be appreciated by anyone. Please advise....... am happy to help out if any cruisers wish me to bring some along 1st-15th Feb. :earsgirl:

The pin trading that seems to be so big right now is trading of Disney pins. If you can find some Disney pins that are only available in England, you might find some traders at "trade locations" (Ask CMs where) who would be interested. But again, some people might like pins of England also--I am not sure.
Some people trade for a certain character, some for a certain park. I like pins from places I have been so my Tower Bridge pin is special to me because I have been there and did the whole "experience". I am not interested in a pin from Stratford-on-Avon since I have not been there.
Have a wonderful trip,

Do the cast members on the ships wear laynards like they do in the parks? My kids love to trade.

Some do, some don't.
Seemed like any CM with a black lanyard could be asked about trading, but since I am not a "trader" I did not keep track.
They post in the NAVIGATORs when trading times will be and where on the ship. There is a pin booth that gets set up in the lobby in the evenings and the fellow who does that even has a BOOK of pins that people can trade out of, but he wants to see what you are putting in, as sometimes he sticks it in a pocket for his personal special collection not his trade-able collection.
Have fun,

natdrenco,

I can tell you that UK Disney Store pins will be a big hit. They're something that is obviously a little harder for US pin traders to come by :) Also, I'm sure the CMs will be happy to see them since they're probably dealing mostly with US pins on a day to day basis.

The UK stores just released some new pins that have the Disney princesses in hearts surrounded by rinestone jewels and also some pins of Pooh and his gang on balloons. If you bring these over, I'm sure you'll have plenty of people eager to receive them :)

And, drat... we were orginally scheduled to take the 2/1/03 Western cruise but had to cancel... :(

these are wearable pins that you get at Disney stores? and then trade to get ones not available/offered in your area?

and...is this an adult activity, child's activity, or both?

also, don't understand the concept of the lanyards--

Maybe someone w/a minute or 2 could give a little explanation and/or background on this whole "pin thing" that I keep reading about?!

thanks so much, (can you tell I'm a little new to this whole thing?)

Hi Penny,

I'm pretty new to pin trading too, but I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Yes, these are the pins that people wear that you can get at the Disney Store. They can also be bought at all the parks, Downtown Disney, on the cruise, etc. Some pins are exclusive to the park where they are sold and so, people who can't get to that park, trade for them. To be tradeable with the CMs, they have to be an official Disney pin with the Disney copyright on the back and of the cloisonne variety - that is, the hard metal enamel type, not buttons, etc.

It is both a child's activity and an adult's... though some people get way overzealous about it and can be a little scary. I've always been told that if you don't feel comfortable with a trade, simply walk away. There is nothing obligating you to trade with someone or for something you don't want to trade for.

The exception is the CMs. If they are on duty and wearing a lanyard, they are required to trade any pin on their lanyard for any Disney copyrighted cloisonne pin that you offer them. The only way they can refuse is if they already have the same pin you are offering them on their lanyard. The lanyards are simply a way of people displaying and wearing multiple pins. It also signals to other traders that you might be open to trades, although, as I said before, you're not obligated to trade if you don't wish to.

HTH,
Julie

Julie:

thanks so much for taking the time to explain--it all makes so much more sense now, rather than me trying to piece together the bits I had read about here and there.

We will be going on our first ever cruise July 26 (it's the Eastern) and I think my girls and I would have fun w/this activity. Now we can hit our local Disney store and stock up on some pins--being from Nebraska we are way too far away from the parks to get them there!!

And thanks to natdenco (the original thread author) for letting me expand on his/her original question.

Always learning from this board!
