I was thinking the same thing, I have never used jar sauce for anything and was wondering if that was what was making them soggy as my marinara is very thick.

when I used to make these, I would always toast them first then do the baking them in the oven thing... they always came out perfect!

What you are doing wrong is not going out to eat, hay if you go to sams you could put a pack in your freezer and end the mess and clean up and most important is the family will thank you lol

It sounds good i would also like the recipe for it. Sounds like a nice Jewish dish.
Please pass it on.

I am not the person who mentioned homemade marinara but it is easy to make. I never use a recipe but here is what I do...

1 large can of whole tomatoes (San Marzano is the best) *I use fresh tomatoes in the summer - just parboil a few minutes to take the skin off, chop and cook till fine

lots of chopped garlic - maybe 6 cloves

salt, pepper, crushed red pepper (optional for a bit of heat)

fresh basil - maybe 10 - 15 leaves, chopped or torn (I roll the leaves and cut into strips)

extra virgin olive oil, I like alot, maybe a 1/4 cup

***
In a sauce pan, heat oil and saute garlic for a few minutes (do not burn). Crush tomatoes with your hand and add to garlic, along with their juice add salt, pepper and crushed red pepper to taste. Simmer for about 15 - 30 minutes. At this point, I take a potato masher and mash the tomatoes since I do not like super chunky sauce. Add basil and simmer for another 5 minutes.

I'd like your recipe too- I have never been able to make a good homemade sauce and I would really like to!

Hi friend!

I have posted my sauce recipe on the Whats for Dinner thread a while ago (not marinara...with lots of meat that cooks for hours). Want me to dig it up?

Guess what i just made for lunch, you guessed it i used your recite and it was great. Thanks for the recite and the idea for lunch. Maybe we should market it.

I just finished eating english muffin pizzas for lunch, so it was a little funny to see this thread! And I did toast my english muffins first. And I actually made sauce today just to make english muffin pizzas because I was in the mood for them! I make it basically like the pp said (but only add red pepper/basil when I'm in the mood) but today I made "raw sauce." I just put two big cans of tomatoes (Hunt's petitie diced) in the blender & throw them in a pot with 16 smashed garlic cloves, a nice amount of good olive oil, and TONS of black pepper. Cook on high until boiling then turn down a little so it doesn't splash everywhere. Stir frequently so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan- cooks in 20 mins. I love garlic so I thinly slice some extra and add it while the sauce is cooking. This is my perfect english muffin pizza sauce.:thumbsup2 It was awesome:thumbsup2

I will have to try your recipe but after having them for lunch today i will wait a few days before doing so. I have to admit yours does sound pretty good and i am still full.

Pretty much this is what I do, only I add chopped onion before the garlic, just let the onions sweat then add the garlic, then the tomatoes.

I will give your recite a try tuesday and let you know how it turns out. It is funny i have not had a bagle pizza for years now i have had them 3 times and wan't to perfect it. The power of this board. It is 4:30 am now and i am thinking why wait?
