Enging light on...trying not to freak out.

What make and model car? I'll look it up and find out where that warning light is on your car. EPA required separate check gas cap and check engine lights beginning with the 2000 model year because soooo many people felt having a loose gas cap trigger the check engine light was forcing them to spend money when all they had to do was tighten the gas cap.

I'm sorry this is just incorrect. Some cars have a separate gas cap loose light but they are not required to have one. None off recent cars have had one and they were all made after 2000.
Op heck the has cap and then take it in after the holiday if it's bothering you.

Original poster, was this solved?

What engine in the Beetle? The 1.8 turbo engine has a recall for ignition coils. If one or more of the ignition coils are cracked, it will trigger the CEL (Check Engine Light). The recall will replace them whether they are bad or not.

Car is at the mechanic even as we speak. I will update as soon as I hear something.

Our Odyssey has had the engine light on for both the gas cap issue as well as a faulty air intake sensor. Quick and easy, inexpensive fixes.

We have 3 cars after 2000 model year and none have a separate check gas cap light. Where do you get your information?

I'm not the PP but my car is a 2006 Kia Spectra and the owners manual actually says the fuel cap being off or loose will cause the Check Engine light to turn on so I think your information is not correct.

Most interesting. I'll have to do some more research. I can find instructions on how to turn if off on a Kia Spectra, but no picture of the dash cluster showing where it is or if it is there.

Our vehicles have "Check Engine" and "Service Engine" warning lights. These indicate different problems. It's important to be familiar with your own make and model of vehicle and the various warning systems. Ignoring a service engine warning would be very serious, causing damage to the vehicle and possibly harm to the occupants. Tightening the gas cap can sometimes alleviate the check engine light on our 2001 vehicle.

Mine was also a gas cap problem. DH took the cap off and then closed it and the light went out. No problems since then.

Okay, just heard from the mechanic. Apparently there is an air lock in the coolant system. He said this was caused during the changing of the thermostat. My car should be fixed and ready tomorrow at no charge. :) Feeling a bit better now.

Best news yet. Hassle, but free.
I'm going to have to do more research. I can't find the fuel cap light requirement in any OMB II sites. A very UNSCIENTIFIC survey of company cars and a few co-workers this afternoon found that the Ford Econolines, Explorers Escapes, Focuses Hyundai Accents, Kia Optimas, Volkswagen Passats, Dodge Caravans, and Honda Accords have both lights, at least the model years in my work back parking lot. Oh well. My 1987 Suburban does not.
