Hi Everyone,

I am just curious. I have an adult daughter who has been dating her bf for over 3 years.

Do most couples have an engagement party? And if so, who throws it? I thought the concept was to aquaint the two families prior to the wedding. Is that accurate? DH & my families already knew each other, so nothing of the sort was ever planned. Of course that was over 25 years ago.

So, like I say, I am just curious. DD & her BF have been talking about "when" they get married for a while now. I just thought if I know ahead of time, maybe I can atleast seem like I am hip. :cool1:

TIA

Hi! If it helps any, my DF's parents threw us an engagement party a couple months after we got engaged. It was really nice! We were considering throwing a party for ourselves but according to Martha Stewart that's a big no-no. :rolleyes1

We had a small dinner at a nice restaurant in their private room for 20 people, it was a mix of family and close friends. We only invited people we knew for sure we would invite to the wedding.

A friend of mine, her parents threw her and her DF a huge backyard BBQ engagement party for over 100 guests! So there is really no right or wrong way to do it.

My suggestion would be to ask your daughter if she would like to have an engagement party, once the engagement becomes official. If they are planning a small wedding or an elopement, then maybe a small dinner or brunch would be a better idea. But I for one thought it was really nice and special that DF's parents wanted to celebrate our engagement with us!

Hope this helps a bit! :goodvibes

Hello,

Just thought I'd jump in here. I just got engaged this May after being with my now fiance for a little over 7 years. Our immediate families already know each other very well, but we still thought it would be really nice. I think it's really just preference nowadays. We're doing ours at a ballroom near the beach, my dad's good friend owns it. It's just something fun that to me is all part of the wedding process. As far as who is throwing it, my parents are, but his also offered to split it. I think at these times, it is all really up to the individual. I hope this helps :)
