End of year teacher gifts

As a teacher, I don't ever remember getting end of the year gifts, just Christmas gifts. I have sometimes received a thank you card at the end of the year from a student or graduating senior, and I always hang on to those because they are truly special! So I would definitely recommend having your son do that. A gift, while certainly not necessary, would be a nice surprise. I never seem to keep enough pens and pencils around my classroom, so I would even just love a box of pens personally! A Barnes and Noble gift card would also be a good idea because it could be used for the classroom or for a personal purchase. I would avoid coffee or chocolates or things like that unless you know for a fact the teacher likes them. I personally can't stand coffee and love chocolate, but I have known teachers who were the opposite.

I always did either a $5 gift card for Dunkin Donuts or a card and a small bunch of flowers (something that sells for $5-7 at the local grocery store florist or a small flowering plant in that price range).

As a first grade teacher, I agree, a gift is not necessary. Hand written notes from kids and parents are awesome. But.... my favorites are:
Disney gift cards!
Movie gift cards/ passes
Target is always useful
Amazon
Ice cream places are great end of the year gift cards to be used over summer

I also am not a big coffee drinker. I'll go to Starbucks a couple times over the summer and maybe if we are on vacation. One year, throughout the year, i got over $200 in Starbucks gift cards! My husband was a happy camper!

I also agree about lunch. If a parent brings me lunch it is the best thing EVER. We never get to go out so I eat the same Lean Cuisine, apple, cheese stick every day! It has only happened a few times but I love it enough that when my son starts kinder next year- I will for sure do this for his teachers. He is in a different district so our breaks are slightly different.

I'm not a Starbucks drinker either, but I thought I was an odd ball. Nice to find someone else like me!
As a teacher I love gift cards to teacherspayteachers website. I also give it every year to my kids' teachers. I'll be honest...my starbucks gets regifted every year- I am not a starbucks drinker!

I'm not a Starbucks drinker either! I give the cards to my DH and DD. They love it!

We give our "end of the year" gift during teacher appreciation week. I've done gift cards and potted flowers before. Last year, I did a more personalized gift for the teacher I knew better (dog treats/toys for her dog, cat treats/toys for her cat), and fun office supplies and a Target card for the other. This year, everyone got 20oz Yeti cups filled with chocolate, because I was too tired to be creative!

I did some Disney themed gifts for my son's teacher during Teacher's Appreciation Week. Each day I chose a quote from a Disney movie and had a corresponding gift. This could easily be adapted. If you want all the details, PM and I will send you the link to my blog, but here's an example of one day.

The quote was from the movie Frozen. "Some people are worth melting for." The gift is an ice cream kit. It has blue and silver candies, white & blue snowflake sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, caramel syrup, chocolate syrup, ice cream cones, Frozen themed ice cream cups, and wooden spoons.

For her end of the year gift, I will try to incorporate The Little Mermaid somehow...like a beach theme? I haven't quite sorted out the details yet.

My kids teachers get gift cards to Total Wine and More ! Its the least I can do

This is so funny, when I was a kid my mom used to give teachers a bottle of champagne at the end of the year. I was a pretty good kid but I'm sure my brother's teachers were really ready to celebrate when the school year ended :rotfl: I couldn't imagine doing that today!

I'm thinking about this today. I'm really surprised it is ok for teachers to have alcohol (in their possession) at school! I'd be too worried to give that!

I already printed off a little questionnaire about the teachers for my Kindergartners to fill out. I guess I should just give a gift card along with it. I've given them Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks during the year. So, maybe something different this time.

one year I did cute little orange themed gift bags, with the tag "orange you glad it's summer!" and filled them with orange things...orange sparkling juice, gum, candy, lip balm etc. I thought it was cute and it doesn't have to be expensive, just thoughtful.

I just remembered one of the best, most inexpensive, but most appreciated gifts I've received. One student bought a huge pack of white board markers. She divided it up giving each of her middle school teachers 3 markers and a thank you note. It was a small gift, but I loved it because I go through those markers so fast!

When my girls were school age, they used to save their $$, then make a donation to a local charity in the teacher's honor. I remember one teacher loved bees, and had tons of bee themed items. She mentioned she had so many knick knacks, so through Oxfam we donated a hive of bees in her name to a family in need with a modern beehive, plus training on how to process and sell their honey in local markets. She cried when she read the certificate we printed up.

I am a teacher those are the best ideas especially the notes. I am retiring and a group of my students got together and made me a card just out of paper with individual notes from each of them. It is one of my favorite gifts.

I'm a teacher's aide at a private school and have received very expensive gifts that make me extremely uncomfortable. I love it when the students give me art and that means a lot more to me than a $300 Nordstrom's GC. I'm running out of room for mugs and bath products, which have been very popular gifts lately.

with all of the target contriversy, target may not be the best gift card to give right now - you ever know what their personal stance is on that.

I would do a giftcard to barnes and noble - a book to read and relax and enjoy over their break

What's the target controversy??

I have been gifting all of my daughters friends customized clipboards from etsy and an adult coloring books and markers. We are considering this as a teacher gift too!

The bathroom issues -

Ah - I had no idea that was even happening but it's actually more reason for me to shop there now!! Thanks for sharing!! I would be boycotting places that would force people who Identify as woman to walk into a men's room - my 9 year old son would be absolutely mortified and embarrassed if that ever happened!!! My 6yo daughter would never notice if they walked into a woman's room. It's not like Target changed their policy - they just confirmed it - so it seems to me that it's safe to gift Target cards to anyone who wasn't already boycotting the store a year ago. Since our teachers put out Holiday Wish Lists and my kids teachers all included Target, I think I'm safe!!
